A Good Man: Forever Young, Book 1 by Grant C. Holland (25)

Andrew

Andrew greeted Doug and Sam at the door. He said, “Sometimes I hate when I’m the first to arrive at the office. It feels so empty around here without you and Jeffrey.”

Doug said, “I think it’s so peaceful when I arrive first. I grab my coffee, ramble up the steps, and then I get some work done for a change. Greg keeps me up to date on so many things, but I still need to do research. New varieties of plants are entering the market every day.”

“You are so diligent about that,” said Andrew. “I’m always impressed.” He stretched his arms over his head and bounced from one foot to the other.

Doug spread his hands and said, “Something is up this morning. You’ve got this whole aura of energy around you. If disco music were playing in the background, I would expect you to start dancing any minute.”

“I’m just getting excited about the move-in at Vincent’s new house. I think it’s just two weekends away. I tried to convince him to move in this weekend, but he said he had some work event interfering.”

“Your projects are all completed?” asked Doug.

“Two more lamps and an end table should be arriving later today. When they are unpacked and placed, my work will be complete. Since you mentioned it, maybe we should have a dance this morning.”

Doug sighed. “It’s not necessary. I went for a long swim in the pool last night, and the muscles are a little stiff.”

“Oh, you know you’ll love it. I’ll put on some vintage Pet Shop Boys, and Jeffrey can join in when he arrives.”

“Jeffrey might just turn around and go home,” said Doug.

Andrew started the coffee machine for Doug’s morning mug and said, “Let me go find the perfect song, and I’ll be right back. Meanwhile, grab that mug and take a few sips. It will get you going.”

“And Sam?” asked Doug.

“I wouldn’t complain if he joins us.” Andrew entered his office and punched in “Go West” on the computer keyboard. The seagull sounds began to fill the speakers as he found his way back to the kitchen. He stepped up close to Doug and said, “Careful, don’t spill, but sway those hips. That’s the least that you can do.”

The overabundant enthusiasm for disco music was, for Doug, simultaneously one of Andrew’s most endearing and irritating qualities. Any time Andrew set his mind that dancing was necessary, it was useless to oppose him. Doug began to sway his hips in time to the music as he attempted to sip his morning coffee.

The kitchen door opened, Sam barked, and Doug sighed with relief. Jeffrey’s arrival saved him from more dancing.

“What’s going on here?” asked Jeffrey. “Did someone win the lottery.”

Andrew gestured toward the west side of the house in time to the music and said, “It’s a move-in pre-celebration.”

Jeffrey laughed and asked, “Couldn’t you wait until the moving takes place?” He quietly pulled an envelope with a bright red ribbon tied around it from his messenger bag.

Andrew pointed at the envelope and lost the beat of the music. Few things could so easily sway his concentration as gifts in any form. He asked, “What’s that?”

“It’s a gift,” said Jeffrey.

The music began to fade, and Andrew said, “I can see that but who’s receiving the gift? Do you have a suitor that you failed to mention?”

Jeffrey laughed and said, “I think only one of us around here has a suitor.”

“Well, if you gave it a little effort, it wouldn’t take much for the two of you to find great guys. You’re both still attractive. You have good jobs, and you’re intelligent.”

“Never mind all of that,” said Doug. He asked Jeffrey, “Should we just give it to him now?”

“Give what to who?” asked Andrew. He was eager to find out what was in the envelope. He liked the intimation that he might be the intended recipient.

Jeffrey said, “Doug and I both know how important this house project has been to you, and we know what a whirlwind the past few weeks have been both personally and professionally. We decided to join together and get something for you to show our appreciation for sticking with the project and sticking by us. All of the quirkiness aside, we do appreciate you, Andrew.”

“Aww, I love you guys!” exclaimed Andrew. He reached out for a three-way hug.

“The envelope is for you,” said Doug.

Andrew took the envelope from Jeffrey’s hands and said, “I can’t believe this. You two are the best. I think I’m gonna cry.”

“Well, don’t cry before you know what it is,” said Jeffrey.

Andrew untied the ribbon and slipped it from the envelope draping the bright red strips over his arm. He pulled out what looked like a certificate. As Andrew read the words, he raised the ribbon bedecked arm and wiped at his eye. “This is for both Vincent and me?”

“Yes, we thought the two of you deserved an evening away from all of the commotion of move-in weekend.”

Andrew examined the voucher again and said, “A night at the Wellington? That’s one of the best rooms in the city! Oh my God!”

He waved a hand and said, “Come here, both of you. Hug me. I need to cry all over your shoulders. You’ve been so good to Vincent and me.”

“And Vincent has been so good for you,” said Jeffrey. He reached out his long arms wrapping one around Andrew and the other around Doug. “Enjoy the night, and the next day we’ll put you both back to work.”

“I don’t know what to say,” said Andrew. “All I can think of is thank you.”

“I think that’s the perfect thing to say,” said Doug. He reached a hand up and ruffled Andrew’s hair. “I hope this one is for real, Andrew. I really do.”
