Arno pointed toward the forest. “They went that way. I tried to catch up with them, but I couldn’t tackle them alone. I had to wait for you.”
Kyan nodded. “Let’s go. We can’t let them get away. This could be our only chance to get both females back at the same time.”
The two men ran for the woods with Natalie and Tina behind them. Natalie glanced at Tina to make sure she wasn’t still shackled. They would need every available hand to get Amber and Melanie away from the Toom. They rushed across the field, and no one paid them any attention. Everyone was too busy to wonder what they were doing.
Halfway across the field, Natalie caught sight of the Toom. The last light of sunset set Amber’s red hair ablaze, and Fo and Te herded the women toward the shelter of the trees. In a matter of seconds, they would disappear again. Natalie quickened her pace. They couldn’t let the Toom escape again, not when they eluded capture so many times before. Kyan and Arno saw the fugitives at the same moment and put on a fresh burst of speed.
Fo looked back over his shoulder and spotted the two police officers on their tail. He muttered something to Te, and they made one last desperate dash for safety, but Kyan was quicker. He crossed the last stretch of flat ground and closed the gap between himself and his quarry. Arno was hot on his heels, and Natalie and Tina came up behind them.
Kyan stuck his hand into the back waistband of his pants and pulled out a handheld blaster. He aimed it at Fo and shouted, “Galactic Police! Stop where you are or I’ll shoot.”
Natalie gasped out loud. Kyan had blown their cover. What if someone heard him? None of them would ever be able to go undercover again. But Kyan didn’t care. He had to get Amber and Melanie away from the Toom. Nothing else mattered. Arno hesitated. Then he pulled out a weapon, too. Where he had it hidden in his leather harness, Natalie could never figure out. He charged it in an instant and pointed it at Te.
Fo bared his teeth in rage. He pushed Amber away to clear the space between himself and the police officers, But Te only grinned his horrible grin and pulled Melanie in front of him. He positioned her right in front of his chest as a human shield. Kyan moved his finger away from the blaster’s trigger, but Arno never wavered. He kept his weapon aimed at Te.
Natalie moved to Kyan’s side, and when Fo shoved Amber away, she dashed forward and grabbed her friend by the hand. She hauled her around behind the police officers where she’d be safe. Fo gnashed his teeth, but there was nothing he could do. He lost his prize for the third time. He could rage all he liked. He would never get Amber back.
But Te threw his head back and laughed his burbling laugh to the skies. “Galactic Police, huh? You think you can defeat me, but you’re wrong. You can have the other three, but this one’s mine. You’ll never get her away from me without killing her. But you’re too good to risk that. Take your three and let me leave with this one. That’s the best you can hope for.”
He took a small square device out of his pocket and Natalie recognized a transport activator. He moved his thumb over the central button. If he pressed that button, he and Fo and Melanie would be gone. Natalie took a step forward, but Te tightened his grip on Melanie so she cried out in pain. Even now, her face registered only dreamy pleasure. She didn’t mind what he did to her. She would submit to his will.
Kyan lowered his weapon and nodded to Arno. “You can’t shoot him without risking her, too. Drop your weapon.”
Te laughed again, but Arno didn’t move. He aimed with calculated care and held Te at blasterpoint. Te brought his activator up and held it out in front of Arno’s face. Natalie let out a defeated sigh. None of them could do anything more. They had no choice but to watch Te take Melanie away. When would they ever see her again? Maybe never.
Out of nowhere, Arno closed his grip on his blaster and fired. Natalie screamed, but she was the only one. None of the other women were alert enough to realize what was happening to them. The blast shot out of the end of the weapon. Natalie started to close her eyes. She couldn’t watch it blow Melanie’s head apart.
But it didn’t. It singed her short hair and hit Te in the face, but it left Melanie utterly unhurt. Te stumbled backwards. Black charred flesh covered the front of his head where his face used to be, and the transport activator fell out of his hand. It bounced on the soft turf and rolled a few paces away. Te’s other hand let go of Melanie, and Natalie dashed forward.
Like lightning, she snatched Melanie’s hand and dragged her behind Kyan. She caught hold of Amber and Tina and guided her three friends back through the trees toward the field. Fo made a grab for her as she passed him, but Kyan brought his weapon up again and held him at bay. Fo retreated into the trees, but not before he scooped up the transport activator. He shifted it in his hand so his thumb hovered over the button, and he took hold of Te’s elbow with his other hand. He backed away from the two police officers.
If he pressed that button, they would escape with their lives—nothing more. Back on board their ship, Fo could stick Te in a regeneration bed and heal him, but they would have lost all their human cargo—at least until they abducted another group from Earth.
Natalie didn’t care if they got away. She had her three friends back again. Their mission was successful, and she could rest knowing none of them was still out there, in slavery. Kyan and Arno backed away with their weapons still charged. They covered Natalie’s retreat, but the Toom didn’t pose any threat to them anymore.
All at once, Tina stopped and looked back. She locked her eyes on Fo. Only Natalie saw her. “Come on, Tina. We have to get out of here before someone sees us.”
Tina faced her again, but only for an instant. Then she turned back toward Fo. Natalie touched her elbow. “Come on, Tina. We have to get to our transport location so we can get back to the ship. Our cover is blown. We have to get out of here.”
This time, Tina didn’t respond at all. She stared at Fo, and he stared back at her. He backed away toward the trees. Then, to Natalie’s horror, Tina set off at a run back toward the two fleeing Toom.
“Tina, no!” Natalie cried.
But Tina was already gone. Kyan and Arno didn’t see her coming toward them from behind. Fo raised his activator just as Tina ran past Kyan and Arno. They couldn’t react fast enough. She ran straight into Fo’s arms, and as soon as he closed his arms around her, he activated the transporter. The lights flashed, the beam exploded, and Fo, Te, and Tina disappeared.
