Big Daddy Sinatra: Charles In Charge (Big Daddy Sinatra Series Book 6) by Mallory Monroe (20)

Jesse Colbert pulled into his driveway when the Jaguar, followed by two police cars and Chief Sinatra’s truck, drove up.  He knew his world was crashing in.  He knew it when he went to Oscar’s and people started staring at the bullet holes in his truck.  But he had no other transportation, and he had to handle his business!

He also knew his world would crash in when he didn’t kill every one of those fuckers in that house.  He just never dreamed it would be decision time this soon.

He pulled out his handgun and sat it on his lap.  The rifle was under his seat.  He was ready.

But his daughter was with him.  Shania sat on the passenger seat beside him.  What was he to do?

He looked nervously through the rearview.  Chief Sinatra had his gun drawn, and was walking his way.  The chief had both hands on his gun, and was aiming the entire time.  He was yelling something, probably for Jesse to get out now, but Jesse had the window up and couldn’t make out what he was saying.

But Shania didn’t have to.  She saw the chief’s gun too.  She saw the other cops getting out of their squad cars, and Big Daddy getting out too.  Her father was cornered!  “Papa look,” she cried.  “They got guns on us.  Papa, they got guns!  What are they doing?”

And that was when they both heard Brent, who was now closer.  “Hands where I can see them!” he was yelling at Jesse.  “Hands where I can see them, Colbert!”

Jesse grabbed the gun off his lap and rolled down his window.  “I got a gun,” he yelled.  “Don’t come any closer!”

Brent and his men stopped walking, but didn’t retreat.  “You have your daughter with you, Jess.  Let’s end this right now.  Throw the gun out and let’s get out of this alive.”

“Alive?” Jesse asked.  “For killing a Fontaine?  They’re gonna give me the chair!”

Shania was stunned when her father made that confession.  She wanted to get out of that truck right then and there.  But she knew he might kill her too, if she ran.

“I don’t stand a chance!” Jesse was saying.

“But I can make a deal right now, Jess,” Brent said.  “I can promise you they won’t make it a capital case.  I can make that deal right now, Jess!  But if you force our hand, you won’t stand a chance.  Give yourself a chance, Jesse.”

Jesse just sat there.  He knew Brent was bullshitting.  But he didn’t know what else he could do!

He made his decision.

He opened the door of the truck as if he was going to step out.  But instead of getting out, he flung the truck in Reverse, pressed his feet on the gas as far down as he could, and sped backwards toward the road.  He ran into one patrol car, nearly splitting it in half, as cops and Brent and Charles dived for safety.

Then he hit a second patrol car, but made it into the road.  Shania was screaming, but it appeared as if he was going to get away.

But Charles wasn’t about to let that happen.  That asshole could have killed his wife when he fired into Lou’s house.  He could have killed Brent!  There was no way in hell he was getting away.

Charles ran into the street behind the truck.

“Pop, wait!” Brent yelled.  He knew Jesse could back up suddenly and take Charles out.

But Charles didn’t give him a chance.  He aimed his gun and fired one shot.  But he got Jesse right through the back of the head.  Jesse’s badly wrecked, speeding truck suddenly began to lose velocity, and direction, as it floundered further up, crossed the road, and stopped in a mud puddle.

Shania jumped out of the car, and ran toward the cops.  Even though her father was shot and immobile, she still feared him more than she feared the cops.  She even ran into Big Daddy’s arms.

He held her, but he was still looking at that truck.  He wanted to make sure that bastard was dead.

When Brent’s officers ran to the truck, and one of them confirmed it for the boss with a thumbs up, it was only then could Charles relax.

But Brent let out a harsh exhale.  And looked at his father.  “We were going to handle it,” he said.  “You didn’t have to do that, Pop.”

“He could have killed Jenay at Lou Fontaine’s.  And you.”  Charles looked at that truck once again.  “Yes, I did have to do it.”

Brent couldn’t disagree with his father.  But that still didn’t make it right.  “Come on, Shania,” he said to the young woman.  “Let’s get you to your grandma’s.”

Shania gladly went with Brent, as she, too, kept taking peeps back at that truck.  Not because her father was dead.  But because she wanted to make certain that he was.
