Billionaire Bachelor: Alex (Diamond Bridal Agency Book 8) by Melissa Stevens, Diamond Bridal Agency (20)

Chapter 20

By the time they got back to the barn, her heart had stopped thundering in her ears every time she touched the handle bars, but she still wasn’t entirely comfortable driving the four-wheeler. If such a little vehicle scared her so bad, how much worse would it be with a car? She didn’t want to think about it. She pulled the bike up in front of the barn and slid off.

“Why don’t you head back up to the house, we’ll put these away and be right behind you.” Alex dropped a quick kiss on her cheek.

“All right.” She went back to the house. Not sure what to do, she made her way to the media room and turned on the TV like Alex had shown her the night before. She was still flipping through the guide, trying to find something to watch when Dave’s voice startled her. She jumped as she turned toward him. He stood leaning in the doorway, one hand propped against the other side of the jam.

“You know, I’m still not convinced you’re not after his money.”

“What money?”

“Play ignorant all you want, where do you think this came from?”

She didn’t have an answer for him so she ignored him, turning back to the TV.

“Hey, I’m not through.”

“Aren’t you? You’ve just told me I’m only here for your brother’s money.”

“I wasn’t finished.” He took a deep breath, then continued, “Like I said, I’m still not convinced you’re not after his money, but after what I just saw I’m not sure I care anymore.”

“What do you mean?” He was talking in riddles and she wished he’d just spit out whatever he was trying to say.

“Hey, stop blocking the door.” Alex’s hand poked his brother in the ribs from behind. Dave dropped his arm and stepped into the room, letting Alex in. He looked at Janie, then to Dave and back again. “What’s going on here?”

“Your brother was just telling me how he thinks I’m only interested in your money.”

“That’s not what I was saying.” Dave sighed.

“Just what the hell were you saying then?” Alex strode over to where Janie was sitting on the sofa and stood beside her, one hand on her shoulder.

“I was saying that after what I saw I don’t care if she is just here for your money.”

“Say she’s after my money one more time and we may come to blows,” Alex growled.

“That’s not what I was trying to say.” Dave scrubbed one hand over his face. “Fuck, I screwed this all up.”

“Then what were you trying to say?” Janie wanted to know. She didn’t want the brothers to fight over her. It would break her heart to come between them.

“I was trying to say that you make him happy. Happier than I’ve seen him a long time. Too long. That’s what matters.”

“You should have just said that to begin with.”

“I was trying but I kept getting interrupted.” Dave shook his head. “Maybe I’m just too tired. I’ve been up since yesterday. I’m gonna go up, take a shower and try to get some shut-eye. Maybe I’ll me more articulate after some rest.”

“Do that.” Alex’s voice was little more than a growl.

“Will we see you at dinner?” Janie asked.

“Possibly. It’ll depend on how much sleep I get.” Dave turned and left, leaving her alone with Alex. He sat beside her and pulled her into his lap.

“He’s right you know.”

“If you say so. I just don’t want you to fight, not over me.”

“If we fight, it won’t be over you. We fight occasionally, usually over his telling me what to do, but we always get past it.”

“As long as it’s not over me, then I think I can handle it.”

“You didn’t ask what I meant.”

“About what?”

“About how he’s right.”

“I’m not here after your money.” She frowned. “I didn’t even know you had money before I got here nor do I have any idea how much you have.”

“Not that part.”

“Then what?”

“About you making me happy.” He smoothed a loose curl away from her face. “I don’t know how it happened so fast, but when I realized that ATV was rolling and taking you with it, I knew.”

“Knew what?” She wasn’t sure what sure what he was getting at. She wished he and his brother would both just start coming out and saying what they meant instead of hinting at it.

“I knew I’d fallen in love with you.” He shook his head slowly. “Somehow, in a very short amount of time, you’ve managed to burrow your way through my defenses.” He took a deep breath. “When you were lying in that grass and I thought you were hurt, I swear I aged ten years. It’s only been a day, but I never want to go back to what I was before you arrived.”

Janie cupped his face and leaned in for a kiss. “You had me long before that.”

“When?”

Her face heated. “When you said I could read anything in the library I wanted, and that if I wanted something more, we could order it.”

Alex laughed and his whole face changed. She leaned in and kissed him again.

“Making my woman love me was easy, all I had to do was offer her the world.”

“You didn’t offer me the world, you offered me all the worlds.”

His arms tightened around her. “You read anything you want, I’ll be happy to buy you any book you want. And when you’re ready, not only will I offer you all the worlds. I’ll show you the world.”

“I—I don’t have a passport.”

“Then I guess we’d better get you one.”

“Yes please.” She lowered her mouth to his and he kissed her with enough passion that she forgot all about the TV, rolling the ATV and his brother. All that was left in the world was the two of them and possibilities.
