Boss Bear (Bear Shifter Cowboy Romance) (Timber Bear Ranch Book 1) by Scarlett Grove (29)

Chapter 7

Juliet thought the porterhouse steak the chef had made for dinner was delicious. Several people from the wedding party had suggested that the infamous Shane Keenan was working in the kitchen. If the dinner was any indication, Juliet was almost ready to believe it was true. Ever since the famous chef was outed as a shifter six years ago, he had dropped out of the spotlight completely. Some had said he had joined the military. Others had said he’d gone into hiding.

But for a celebrity who had been almost everywhere such a short time ago, it was exciting to think that maybe he had prepared her meal. After her second glass of red wine, Juliet was feeling a little warm and decided to walk out onto the balcony that overlooked the glassy lake below. The snow had all melted in the spring weather, but the water was surely still devastatingly cold.

Juliet shivered, even under her fleece jacket, as she approached the railing and looked down at the magnificent view. There was a full moon above in the clear mountain sky and it cast its silvery light over the water. Sparks of moonlight rippled on the water and created an image out of the fairytale. As an artist, Juliet was often captivated by the sight of beautiful things. The moonlight over the lake was definitely one of them.

She was so enraptured by the moment that she didn’t hear the balcony door open and close behind her until it was too late. She sensed someone beside her and looked up with a start. She met the most devastatingly gorgeous green eyes on the planet and her heart nearly stopped. It was him. Levi Blackthorn. Bear shifter. Lodge owner. Hottie.

She backed up a pace to take him in all at once. He was tall, at least a foot taller than her. His broad shoulders and muscled arms filled out the snug-fitting fleece he wore over a pair of dark jeans. Juliet licked her bottom lip and tried to make her heart stop pounding like it wanted to beat her to death.

“Levi,” she said breathlessly. Why was she breathless? She’d just been standing here, not jogging.

“Juliet,” he said in a low growl.

The moonlight sparked in his green eyes, making them glow with otherworldly passions. Juliet’s breath caught and she didn’t know what to think or say or do. Her instinct took over and she stepped forward, reaching out to him.

“I’m so happy to finally meet you,” she said, shaking his hand.

“So am I,” he said, his voice husky. “But I think that a handshake is too formal a greeting after everything we’ve shared.”

“I agree,” she said in that same breathless voice.

She was starting to annoy herself, but she couldn’t think about it for long because Levi was leaning forward. His long, muscled arms reached out around her and enveloped her curvy little body in his embrace. He pulled her against his hard chest, her head only coming up to his pecs. He held her to him, his warmth radiating from his body. He was so warm. And he smelled so good. Juliet could feel his heart beating under her cheek. He was just as excited as she was. She stayed in his embrace for a long moment, not wanting to break it, not wanting to break the spell. Finally, he stepped back, but she felt like she didn’t want to stand alone anymore.

“That was a better greeting,” he said.

He smiled and it lit up in his eyes, making him even more handsome than before.

“I agree,” she said, giggling at herself.

Her whole body felt as if it were vibrating. The smell of his skin and the feeling of his embrace had done something to her. It had cracked something open inside of her, something she wasn’t even aware existed. It was it was as if a wild, wanton creature had been released from behind a prison wall and was spiraling upwards from within the depths of Juliet’s soul. She felt damp and flushed. She bit her lip, resisting the urge to lean up on her tip-toes and kiss his full, luscious lips with wild abandon.

“Can I confess something?” he said.

“Confess away,” Juliet said.

She wanted to hear all of his confessions. She wanted to know his deepest, darkest thoughts. She wanted to know every little detail of his life, his loves, his world. What made him tick? What excited him? What made him scream out for more?

“I was nervous to see you,” he said, with a chuckle.

“That makes two of us,” she said, relieved that she wasn’t the only one.

“As a shifter, it hasn’t always been safe to date a human woman,” he said.

“I completely understand. I have my own past. Not with shifters, but with men,” she said, feeling that maybe she had revealed too much.

She didn’t want to tell him about Ernest and what he had said and done to her, or the fact that the asshole was now her boss. That kind of information could be pretty damning. Would he think that she was weak and stupid for staying in such a bad situation? She decided that for now she would definitely keep it to herself.

“Well, it’s just the two of us now. I think we both know that we enjoy each other’s company. I want to know you, Juliet Hernandez,” he said in that husky voice that told her he meant business. “I want to focus my full attention on you.”

It made Juliet go weak in the knees. No one had ever talked to her like that before. He wanted to focus on her? What did that mean? She started breathing heavily and was feeling a little lightheaded. She flicked her tongue out over her lip, and she could see his eyes focusing on the motion. He was so intense. So sexual. Juliet had never been the type of girl to throw herself at a perfect stranger, but she was just seconds away from doing that right then and there. Unfortunately, the balcony door swung open and Charlotte yelled at her from the doorway.

“What are you doing out here?” Charlotte bellowed.

“Charlotte…” Juliet started, embarrassed.

“Is this your shifter?” Charlotte walked forward to get a better look at Levi.

“Charlotte,” Juliet said in a warning tone. “Don’t be rude.”

“I don’t have anything against shifters,” Charlotte said. She was obviously a little tipsy. “He is as hot as his picture. Hi, my name is Charlotte. I’m the bride.”

Charlotte reached out her hand and Levi took it. Charlotte made a silly little curtsy with the flourish of her hand other hand.

“I’m Levi Blackthorn. I own the Fate Mountain Lodge.”

“That’s right,” Charlotte said. “Good job, Juliet.”

“Charlotte, can I talk to you later, please?” Juliet said, feeling mortified. Charlotte leaned forward and planted a sloppy wet kiss on Juliet’s cheek before rushing back into the dining room to join the rest of the party.

“I’m sorry about that,” Juliet said.

“No need to apologize. I have friends who embarrassed me too.”

“Then you know the feeling,” Juliet said, glancing back through the glass-paneled French doors at her friends who were laughing and partying in the dining room.

“You have no idea,” Levi said. “Maybe I’ll tell you about it someday.”

“Why don’t you tell me now,” she said, wanting to know everything about him.

“Usually I wouldn’t talk about this, but you already know that I’m a bear. I lead the area’s volunteer search and rescue crew and I run this lodge. Several of the men I served in the military with now work with me here at the lodge and the rest work on the rescue crew. One of them has impulse control problems and another one, who just came back to town, has a serious temper. I made the mistake of hiring him right before the wedding. Now he’s in charge of my kitchen.”

“I heard that Shane Keenan was running the kitchen. Is that true?”

“That would be him. But of course, everyone already knows he’s a bear shifter.”

“He was the most well-known chef in the country six years ago. He even had his own cooking show, cookbooks, all of that stuff. What happened to him?”

“Being outed forced him to join the military. The war was hard on everyone. Shane’s been hiding out in a cave for the last year.”

“That’s terrible. It’s been so unfair for shifters since you came out to the public.”

“Things are changing, but things also stay the same,” he said thoughtfully.

Juliet looked up into his green eyes, wondering what he was thinking. She could not imagine going through life experiencing the kinds of things that shifters did. Juliet had grown up a Latina in Oregon, which had its own challenges. But she had a close family and plenty of community support to get through college and start her career.

In the last twenty years, shifters had experienced killings, police targeting, and what amounted to a forced draft into the military six years ago. It wasn’t until the shifters came back from the war and were heralded as heroes that the culture had changed from persecuting them to idealizing them in the media. Even that seemed a little cheap to Juliet.

“Things are changing enough for there to be a site like Mate.com,” Juliet said hopefully.

She liked Levi already. With what he was doing to her body with his mere presence, she definitely wanted to see where this could go. Just a few years ago, a relationship between them would have been impossible. But now, the morning TV news shows seem to always have a new story about hot and hunky male shifters.

Unlike how those news articles were presented, Juliet saw Levi as a real person. He wasn’t just an animal, a shifter, he was also a human being. He deserved as much consideration and acknowledgment as anyone else.

“What did you think of Mate.com?”

“A friend of mine developed it. I wanted to check it out. Finding a mate is important to me. Especially now. I’m ready to settle down. I’m building a legacy for my cubs.”

“Cubs?”

“My children will be shifters, like me.”

“Right. But they’re born…human, right?”

“Completely human. Shifter babies don’t have their first shift until they’re about two. It’s a milestone.”

“Raising a shifter baby must have its own challenges,” she said, thinking about whether or not she could actually handle being the mother of such a child.

“It takes a special kind of woman to be the mother of a shifter child, or so I’ve been told,” Levi said, moving closer.

Juliet longed to have him reach out and pull her against his chest again, but he was being infuriatingly gentleman-like. She had expected the shifter to be all over her from the first moment, but he had only given her an affectionate greeting and had since given her a respectable amount of space.

She sucked her bottom lip and reached up to straighten the lapel of his fleece jacket. He looked down at her with surprise in his green eyes. He caught her hand in his and brought the palm to his mouth, kissing the pulse point on her wrist with his full, gorgeous lips.

An electric thrill shot up her spine and curled over her shoulders, making her breasts prick. Inside, the party was winding down and people were disappearing from the dining room, but all Juliet noticed was the look on Levi’s handsome face.

“Can I walk you back to your room?” he said in a low, gravelly voice.

“Yes,” she whispered.

He held her hand and led her through the French doors and into the dining room. The kitchen staff were bussing the tables and removing the white tablecloths as Levi and Juliet walked through the lobby and turned down the hallway.

Levi’s big hand cupped hers with his masculine warmth. She felt shy and tingly all over, stealing glances at him as they made their way to the elevator. On the way up, he turned to her and pushed a stray lock of straight black hair behind her ear.

“I’m really glad I met you,” he said as the elevator door dinged and opened.

They walked down the hall to her door and stood there awkwardly for a moment. The smell of him, the size of him, the very presence of him. He leaned in, enfolding her in his arms, and pressed his lips to hers. She sucked in a moan and gripped his upper arms. The feel of his muscles under her hands made her wet and weak in the knees.

His tongue only flicked out and caressed the line between her lips, but he didn’t push further. After a single deep, swooning kiss, he pulled back and smiled at her.

“I’ll pick you at noon for our date,” he said softly.

“Uh-huh,” she said, nodding.

He turned to go, and she stared after him for a moment before fumbling with her key card in the door. When she made it inside, she leaned against the inside of the door. Her whole body was alive with sparking need.

“Holy shit,” she said breathlessly to herself in the quiet room.
