Dreams By the Fire: Sinful Holiday Series #2 by Crimson Syn (9)

Chapter 8

LOGAN

Christmas Eve had crept up on me quickly enough. I had spent the last few days locked up in the cabin, writing out fantasy upon sexual fantasy that involved Logan at every turn of the page. But I couldn’t stop writing. The love story was finally coming to fruition and I couldn’t stop even if I wanted to. I needed to finish it. I had stayed up all night, typing it up and as I got to the end, I realized I couldn’t finish it, something was missing. I needed a happy ending that just wouldn’t come to me. Probably because I didn’t have one of my own. I had struggled with it all night, and reluctantly, in the early hours of the morning, I shut my laptop and went to sleep.

When I woke up, snow was heavily falling outside, and a draft of cold air had seeped into the cabin. I was supposed to leave early so I could get home for Christmas morning, but sleep turned out to be a priority. I gazed out the window in shock, turning on the news I realized I might not be able to get home at all. Hell, I’d be lucky to even make it into town. It had been snowing all night and the roads were had been completely blocked. I hadn’t been shopping since Logan had dropped off all that food, food that had lasted exactly three weeks. I only had a few items left, enough for the next day or so.

I took a gulp of my coffee, figuring that if I left now I’d be able to make it into town. I threw my jacket on and as I opened the door, a huge gust of wind slammed through me. Legend took a few steps back.

“Stay here, buddy. I’ll be right back.” I pointed at him and his big eyes stared back at me worriedly.

I lifted my arm, but the snow was falling so heavily, I barely made it to my car door. I struggled with the door as the wind kept slamming it closed. Finally, I was able to maneuver myself into the car. I sat in the front seat watching how the snow covered the hood and the wind rocked the truck. I was stubborn though, so I started the car up and started for the now snow-covered road. My truck wobbled along the uneven snow, but I took it slow. Halfway down the pathway I couldn’t see anything in front of me. I breathed in deeply and decided I’d better turn around, I couldn’t leave Legend alone. I didn’t want to be found frozen only a mile away from my home and what if I couldn’t get back, my poor puppy would starve and freeze to death. I shook the morbid thoughts from my head and desperately tried to maneuver the truck around and up the disappearing road. I sighed as I finally spotted my cabin a few feet away. I drove right up to the door and ran in.

Legend stared at me as I barged back into the cabin. I stared back at him and shivered. “No luck, baby. It’s worse than I thought.”

He placed his head on the edge of his warm bed and let out a deep exasperated sigh. I nodded. “Exactly.”

I took off my jacket, shaking off the snow and looked around the cabin. I needed to start a fire just in case the electricity went out. Moving towards the fireplace I realized I had forgotten to get more wood. Two logs stared back at me and I slowly started to panic. My hands started to shake and I started to breathe erratically.

This week had been too much for me, the events of a few nights ago with Michael had left me battered and upset. My solace in that moment was to let Logan hold me, his protective stance consumed me and I wanted to get lost in it. But I was leaving, maybe not today, but as soon as this storm broke I’d be leaving Bethel and everything that came with it behind. My heart felt heavy and saddened and tears started to fall down my cheeks.

I ignored them as I went back to my bedroom. I grabbed at some blankets when suddenly a piece of paper floated to the floor. The codes for my grandfather’s old radio stared back at me. I grabbed them and ran back to his office. Rummaging around the closet I finally found the CC radio tucked back in a corner. I plug it in quickly and start to talk.

“Hello.” Noise runs through the speakers and I bite my lip. “Hello, can anyone hear me?”

“Holly?” His voice rings through and my whole body lights up.

“Logan? Is that you?”

“Holly baby, where are you?”

“I’m up at the cabin. I tried to get down the mountain, but I can’t.”

Radio silence fills the speaker and suddenly I could hear a vowel here or there. He’s talking but it’s not coming through.

“I can’t hear you Logan.” I wait and nothing comes through. “Logan?”

My hands start to tremble as I realize that I have no food, not enough water and I’m all alone up in this cabin. Frustrated, I get up and make my way to the living room. I start to pace.

“I need to keep calm. Logan knows I’m up here. There’s no need to panic.”

I look down at Legend and its as if he already knows me, his eyes looking at me worried. “Don’t look at me like that. I’ll get us out of here…somehow.”

The phone suddenly rings and I scream at the sound. I run over to the kitchen and pick it up.

Holly?”

“Logan! Logan, I can’t get off the mountain, and I have no food, no water...”

“It’s okay beautiful. It’s okay.”

I nodded and try to focus. “Okay. If you say it’s okay, then I trust you.”

“I need you to keep yourself warm. Cell phone tower is down, but the phonelines should stay up for a little while longer.”

O-okay.”

“Stay by the phone. I’m not leaving you, okay. I never planned on it.”

“Yes. Yes, okay,” his words sent relief through my body.

I slowly hung up the phone, taking it with me into the living room. I dragged all the blankets I could over to the couch and sat Legend down beside me. I figured I wouldn’t start a fire yet, not unless it got really bad. I shivered as the wind made the cabin shake with its force. I never a snow storm could ever be this bad. I shook my head and leaned my head back against the couch.

Of all people to call out, and it turns out to be the one person I keep trying to avoid. Maybe this was a sign from up above telling me to give into him.

I sighed and looked at Legend. “I just can’t get away from him, can I?”

The dog simply wagged his tail and I took in a deep sigh. My heart soared at the sound of his voice and who was I kidding. He was the only person I wanted to come rescue me.
