Kage (Peril's End MC Book 1) by Cali MacKay, Esther E. Schmidt (4)

Chapter Four

Kage

Dividing tasks to secure the farmhouse went easier than I thought. Well, except for that asshole Benji. He’s got a big mouth and not a whole lot of brain matter. At least that’s the impression I’m getting, and from the looks of it, it seems like Tamar isn’t very happy with the guy either. I wonder what the deal is between them.

As for me and my brothers, we’ve been part of Peril’s End MC for over sixteen years. During that time we’ve dealt with a lot of assholes and you quickly learn to pick the rotten ones from the men who have respect and loyalty rooted in their bones. This Benji fucker? He’s a rotten one that will only look out for himself, throwing others on the ground so he can step on their bodies to lift himself up. Tamar seems like a smart woman, so why the hell she’s got him on her team is beyond me.

I must say that the time I spent alone with her while we were driving is something I enjoyed a little too much. Even if there were some moments without words being thrown back and forth, having her around was a small comfort. That’s as rare as it gets nowadays, and besides her feisty attitude, and a damn fuckable body, she’s a woman who can handle herself. I’m not going to let this one slip through my fingers.

“You’re coming with me, Tamar. We can have a little chat while we go scavenge for gas. Then we’re hopping back into our truck and riding till we deliver the bounty.” Benji moves toward her, and it’s all I can do not to wrap my hands around his throat and squeeze the life out of that fucker.

“Not happening, squirt,” I quip, intently making him seem like a kid who’s whining to his mom because things aren’t going the way he wants.

Benji swings around and takes a step forward to face me head on, his whole posture making it clear he’s ready to pounce. Just try, fucker.

“Stop it,” Tamar growls. “It’s not your decision to make, Benji. I need you to double check the house and start making a fire. Kage and I will go scavenge for gas. The rest of you will stay with the bounty in the main room to keep an eye on each other until we get back. Oh, and try not to bump heads okay?”

“Nice, Tamar. Good to see you’ve got your priorities straight, choosing that biker over one of your own.” Benji sneers and stomps toward the farmhouse.

“Watch your mouth. My decisions are final and you sure as hell better respect them.” Tamar growls out her words again, her hands in fists by her side, looking ready to murder Benji as he walks away from her.

Now I know for sure that there’s some tension between the two of them. The second I get her alone, I’ll have to find out what the deal is with this guy and why she’s keeping him around. I mean, there’s got to be more than just safety in numbers. Sure, she’s got her sister, but I get that two women on the road these days isn’t perfect. But still.

“Act civil people, the world is messy enough as it is,” Ramon says as he opens the door of the truck to pull out our bounty.

We’ve checked the farmhouse and it seems to have been deserted for quite a few years. It’s a perfect location to spend the night. We can even build a fire to keep us warm and make a decent meal, just as Tamar suggested Benji should do.

“Lemme give you a hand. We’ll carry him in together.” Virgil—I believe that’s what Tamar called him—steps up and helps my brother. At least he seems like a decent guy, unlike the other asshole.

Tamar takes a step toward me before we all hear Benji sneer his words. “Go off and fuck him then. Hell, maybe he’ll die on the spot when you’re done just like the first one who got in your pants.” The fucker snorts, shaking his head. “We can see if you’ll cause another apocalypse.”

All of us are momentarily stunned by how big an asshole this guy is. See? I knew there was something about him, and this smells like a hell of a lot more than just friction between two people. Why the fuck is she letting him stick around?

I expect Tamar to act but instead it’s her sister, Dessa, who shoves the fucker against his shoulder. “Uncalled for, you ass. Now get inside and do as you’re told.”

Tamar grabs her bow and arrows and stalks past me, throwing her words over her shoulder. “Let’s go.”

“Mind telling me what’s up with this Benji guy?” I ask when I’ve caught up with her because she’s speed walking to shake off the anger that’s visibly painted all over her face.

“He’s just being his usual asshole self. Maybe with a hint of jealousy thrown into the mix since he’s been trying to get in my pants for years,” she grumbles but doesn’t add anything more.

Her beautiful face is still carved in anger and somehow that doesn’t sit well with me. In an effort to make her smile, I try to joke around, though I’ve never been hilarious. “Maybe he’s overcompensating for being named after a lost scruffy terrier that weighs ten pounds and nips at people’s heels.”

I give her an easy smile as she lets out a laugh, her anger dissipating just as I’d hoped. And fuck, but that smile of hers does things to me—pure animal lust things that make me want to get down and dirty for some raw to the bone fucking. Though I suspect any attempt to pursue that line of thought will end with me getting my balls kicked so hard, they’ll be lodged in my throat. But I’m a patient man, and I can be charming if I try—and she’s worth trying for.

A noise up ahead catches both of our attention and breaks the moment. Crouching down, we watch a rabbit run ahead of us. Cute, but that’s also food on legs. I elbow Tamar and I can tell she understands, and yet she does nothing but rise to her feet and start walking again.

“We don’t need the sweet bunny. Let that one hop for another day.” She gives me a wink before she adds, “Dessa found a stocked to the brim canning pantry when she checked the farmhouse. She told me not to bother with food, unless we find something really good.”

Well, that’s a great find. I wonder what’s for dinner. And shit, that’s luxury…questioning what’s for dinner, because most times it’s no questions asked, eat what’s set in front of you. A few times a month we even have to settle with just water to get by.

We walk in silence for another fifteen minutes or so before she glances my way and releases a sigh. “Where were you when the virus hit?”

“In the gym working out with my brothers.” I shake my head at the memory. “People started dropping like flies. It all just happened so quick—and right after the solar flare hit. We didn’t know what to think anymore.”

At first, we thought it was something in the gym air or maybe the water, but a handful of people were unaffected. When we got out on the streets we saw it was the same thing. I’m still thankful my brothers and I were all immune to the virus. I can’t even begin to imagine living without them or having to watch them die.

Fuck. It was hard enough to watch others drop around me. I really hated the first few days. It was bad enough after the power got knocked out. But then the virus hit, sending everyone into a panic. The people who survived seemed to turn on each other. Only cared about themselves, all of a sudden. Stealing, killing, looting. Anything to keep themselves alive, instead of working together to keep the group safe and strong.

“The three of us had just started the company we founded. Well, Ramon was only seventeen at the time. He was going to finish school and help out whenever he could until he could join us full time once he graduated,” I tell her.

“I had just had sex for the first time and the guy walked into the bathroom to ditch the condom and when he walked out…he just died on me,” she blurts out. “I ran downstairs and saw my neighbor dying in her front yard. I really believed I was cursed until my sister barged into the house.” Tamar glances at me and for real, I don’t even know how the fuck to react to her story, when she starts to laugh, making me bark out in laughter right along with her.

Although it abruptly halts when I remember what Benji said. That fucking asshole. It makes my anger burn in my veins. “Why the hell do you keep that asshole Benji around? Humiliating you like that? I need to throat punch the fucker when we get back.”

“Because he and Virgil were both working with my dad when the world went to hell. Had been for years. My dad was killed when someone tried to take our stuff. They slit his throat while we were all sleeping. Some fucked up stranger thought a backpack with water and food was more valuable than my father’s life.” She clears her throat but I can feel the emotion that’s vibrating off her. “Since then, we always have two on guard and trust each other to fight off any trouble.” She shrugs and I can’t even blame her, since it’s plain logic, right there.

Tamar stops and points at something on our right. Squinting my eyes, I can tell there’s another farmhouse with two trucks parked out front. The whole place looks overgrown with weeds and vines.

“Let’s hope this place is like the other one and there’s still some gas left in those trucks.” She nods and grabs her bow tighter. Smart girl.

“I’ll go left and you right?” I ask.

“Sure thing, Sherlock.” She fucking winks and dashes off.

Again, smart girl for dashing off because I feel like I should spank that tight ass for calling me that. Twice. But I can’t right now so I jump into action too. We have to clear the farmhouse and get what we need without running into unexpected shit. Head in the game, since one slip up can result in you taking your last breath.

The outside looks exactly like the inside; forgotten. Everything is covered in a thick layer of dust as I stroll out of the living room and into the kitchen where Tamar is opening every cabinet.

“Find anything good?” I question.

“Not yet,” she mutters and closes a cabinet, only to open the next one…bending over with her tight ass pointing right at me.

Fucking hell. I groan and adjust my cock, now painfully hard thanks to her amazing ass. And though I’d like nothing more than to strip her naked and fuck her until she’s screaming my name, I know that now’s not the time.

She stands up and turns around, catching me staring, the bulge in my jeans impossible to hide. She scoffs looking right at my hard cock, a smile dancing on her lips. “Well, at least that looks promising.”
