CHAPTER ONE

Master Augustin Chamberlin sat with Calum Keith Chieftain of Clan Keith on the back deck of the Dragon’s Blood Lodge. Never in a million years would he have believed such an alliance would exist, dragons and vampires bonded together.

Members of the paranormal world, as a rule, tended to be species-specific in their matings except for human and humans were somewhat of a wild card and generally accepted by all. Fate though makes her own rules. So here he was overseeing the union of his Coven Commander, Vadin Labont, and Calum's dragon warrior, Kyle Keith.

When the dragon clan set down roots in Laramie two years ago, Augustin had seen it as an impending disaster for his Coven which resided just to the Northwest in Jackson. Dragons were not known for their understanding or acceptance, they were fierce warlike creatures and they were unstoppable.

Augustin had learned recently that preconceptions were not always valid and that dragons could be allies. He was also given access to his little cousin, Archie now in the custody of his uncle who happened to be the mate of the dragon clan’s second-in-command.

The boy was half vampire and half human but was raised on a steady diet of dragon blood. The outcome was uncertain but it was a given that in time, young Archie would have strength and skills beyond the average vampire.

Augustin found common ground with Clan Keith and a tentative friendship with their Chieftain. Now they would find their way forward following the union of their two respective members.

Augustin looked ahead to understanding the strength and skill of Kyle Keith. Here was a dragon warrior adept in current technology, now to be like one of his own. Calum seemed just as impressed to have Vadin as part of his Clan. It would be a good union for all concerned.

Augustin was finding that having a dragon clan in your backyard was not as unsettling as he initially thought it would be. He and Calum continued their light banter as they sat together overseeing the festivities. When Kyle and Vadin entered the backyard, they both stood and raised their glasses in a toast to the new couple, wishing them an eternity of happiness.

“Clan Keith!” Calum shouted.

“The Coven Chamberlin!” Augustin followed jovially. He took a long sip of his champagne and glanced to his left just as someone was leaving the house and walking out onto the deck. He was muscular yet slender in comparison to the other dragons. He had bright red hair and the same electric green eyes as most of the Clan. Augustin found himself inexplicably transfixed by the presence of the stranger.

Calum patted his shoulder, but Augustin was helpless to take his eyes off the new man. “You haven’t met my youngest warrior, James," Calum commented. "Augustin this is James Keith and James this is Master Augustin Chamberlin."

"Pleased to meet you, sir." James turned to greet him with a smile that curled Augustin’s toes. This was the one, the one he’d waited centuries to find. The other half of his soul. His beloved. Augustin reached out his hand as if in slow motion, just waiting for the burst of electric awareness when James’ hand held his.

“Pleased to meet you too, James.” His voice was an octave lower but he hoped no one took notice. He wrapped his fingers around James’ hand and held on, the sensation reverberating to his core. He was hard pressed to let go as James removed his hand and with a nod moved away towards the festivities in the yard.

Augustin watched him closely throughout the remainder of the day. Following James with his eyes everywhere that he went. James kept sneaking glances at him too, the look on his face pensive. He knew there was something about him, Augustin could see it in his eyes, but James could not put his finger on what it was.

Augustin never left Jackson without cloaking himself to conceal his scent. It was a habit born out of the desire to remain anonymous. Paranormals who knew him knew him by sight and those who didn't know him didn't need too. But now the casual practice that he thought nothing of in the past, had prevented his beloved from recognizing him. James was unaware that they are a fated match.

Uncertain how to proceed, Augustin decided to stay silent until he could determine the best way to make himself known to his beloved. To simply drop the cloak would be too abrupt and would require too much explanation. He would wait and speak with Calum about the situation in private and get his advice.

When the celebration turned to music and dancing, several of Augustin’s men, who he’d brought with him, approached James but he turned them all down. James wasn’t just handsome, he was captivating with his beautiful red hair, striking green eyes and porcelain complexion. He understood why James was being sought out. But truth be told if James had accepted any of the offers, Augustin would have intervened immediately. Augustin can be patient but he does not share and he would not sit and observe as his beloved danced with another.

Thankfully, James didn’t show an interest in any of the eligible men at the party. He sat with family and Augustin watched as James entertained Archie while his parents, Dane and Alrick danced. Augustin noticed that James had a warm robust smile and he appeared to genuinely enjoy watching the festivities but did not once try to join in.

Augustin could not take his eyes off James for the remainder of the evening. He wanted this man and he wanted to proclaim their connection loud and proud, but this was not the place and he would need to prepare before springing it on the man.

Augustin could sense the young man’s social difficulties and wondered what his life had been like to leave him so quiet and unsure. The young dragon belonged to him now, there was no question and that knowledge was glorious. Whatever James’ life had been, his future was going to be perfect, because Augustin would accept nothing less. Augustin finally had his beloved within sight and he could see his future in full color with this magnificent creature.

Augustin and two of his men, Antoni and Nef, remained in Laramie for the night. They secured rooms at the hotel downtown. The rest of the Chamberlin contingency returned to Jackson. Vadin and his beloved Kyle left for a week in the mountains.

Augustin stood on the small balcony outside his room and scanned the horizon. His mind was consumed with ways of clearing the way to claiming his beloved, James Keith. He knew absolutely nothing about the man yet he ached to be with him. The thought brought a soft smile to his lips and hunger to his eyes. He wondered how things would have unfolded had he not cloaked his scent and if James had recognized him.

Augustin had not thought of his beloved in a long time. As a young boy, he often daydreamed about the perfect match that Fate had waiting for him. But as he grew into a man and life came at him hard and unyielding, his mind drifted from such imaginations. He had no time and very little heart for the prospect of love and romance. It seemed that such a connection was not to be his, he believed as every paranormal believes, but he had little hope that he would be blessed with love.

Now, his skin prickled and his breath came out in expectant pants, all evidence that his time had come. Fate had blessed him with James Keith. The young dragon was more than he ever dreamed of, even back when his fantasies of the future filled his days. James Keith was a man of strength and honor and a man Augustin would strive to merit.

James watched as the vampire master left and wondered why he was so interested in this man, this stranger, this vampire. After meeting him earlier in the day, James found himself constantly looking for him. James, as a rule, did not seek out attention of that nature. It was something he found difficult and awkward so he usually avoided relationships.

Like the others, he was sent by King Duncan Adair on a quest to find his mate but he really had no delusions that such a thing would happen to him. He joined the quest those hundred years ago in order to escape. His Chieftain knew his background as did his fellow warriors because they were all Clan. He had nothing to hide from them, but it terrified him that he was not suited to be anyone’s mate.

The Vampire was attractive, but there was more to it than simple attraction. The moment their eyes met, James felt a familiarity as if they’d already met, but they hadn’t. He’d heard about Master Augustin, but never met him. His words, his gaze, his very presence became like a physical touch that James could feel skate across the surface of his skin.

His mind went in several directions, but the lack of scent kept him confused. The idea that the great vampire master could be his mate actually made him laugh. Fate would not be so cruel to such a fine-looking man as Augustin Chamberlin. Besides, he did not smell like his mate.

The party broke up around midnight, with the couple leaving shortly before. James, Flynn, and Ewan volunteered to do clean-up. James found that he possessed a lot of pent-up energy and wanted to burn it off before trying to sleep.

Thoughts of Augustin Chamberlin refused to leave his mind as he finished with the backyard and entered the kitchen. Ewan and Flynn were also finishing up dishes and food storage. They would be eating finger sandwiches for the next month by the looks of it.

“The yard is back in order, do you need any help in here?” James called out as the last of the pots and pans were stowed away.

“No, we’re good in here too. I guess we can call it a night.” Ewan announced and slapped Flynn on the shoulder and gave James a salute as he disappeared up the back stairway.

James walked up beside Flynn. “Do you know anything about the Coven Master? He seems rather intense.” James asked casually as he and Flynn walked into the living room for a final check around the first floor before turning in for the night.

Flynn stopped and turned to look at him directly. "I thought the same thing, very intense like he was really interested in something."

James was relieved that it wasn't just him who felt the heaviness coming from the man. "Any theories?" He knew Flynn loved to spin stories based on simple observation.

“Could be Archie. He wants to have a regular visitation schedule and Calum has agreed. Maybe he was contemplating how to use their time together.” Flynn wrinkled his nose at his own guess. “No, that sounds absurd. I’ve seen him with Archie, he is very comfortable and their time together was natural, not manufactured.” Flynn rubbed his chin and glanced up at the ceiling as if searching for the answer there. Suddenly he snapped his fingers and looked excited. “I think he saw someone he’s interested in.”

“One of us?” James scowled.

“Yeah, one of us. Now that I think of it, he did look rather broody and his eyes, man they were on fire.”

“Now you’re just making shit up.” James gave a half grin.

"Maybe, but I think I'm right, he was interested in somebody. Someone in the backyard  was lighting his fire." Flynn chuckled.

“Goodnight Flynn.” James rolled his eyes.

“Goodnight James.”

Augustin was up early after a night of very little sleep. His intention was to call Calum and set up a meeting to discuss his relationship with James. When he entered the outer room, the phone was ringing. His guard Nef picked it up and after a few words put it on hold and handed the receiver to Augustin.

“Chieftain Calum Keith for you sir.” He said and then returned to his post at the door.

"Hello, Calum," Augustin answered.

“Are you free, I’d like to discuss a sensitive subject with you.” Calum sounded firm not a shred remained of the lighthearted conversationalist of last night.

“Yes, of course. Would you like to meet here at the hotel or should I come to you?” Augustin was in Calum’s territory so the location of the meeting was up to Calum.

"I'll come to you." With that, the phone went dead. Augustin understood from Calum's tone that whatever the subject of this meeting, it was important. Calum arrived immediately following their conversation which spoke to the serious nature of this meeting.

They sat together in the main room of the large suite. Augustin had his men wait in the hall, reading the need for privacy from Calum’s unguarded expression when eyeing the guards. “Can I get you anything?” Augustin asked before taking a seat opposite Calum.

"No, but thank you." He raised his eyes speculatively and waited for just a beat before stating the reason for the meeting. "You showed an inordinate amount of attention to one of my men yesterday."

This time, Augustin was the one to raise his gaze slowly and take in every nuance of the dragon's words and presentation before responding. "Yes, I did," Augustin stated but did not elaborate.

“I will not allow you to toy with him.” Calum straightened in his seat and his eyes bore down on Augustin. “James is a keen and capable warrior, but when it comes to matters of the heart, he is a fragile young man.”

"James is my beloved," Augustin announced and watched as Calum's expression changed from challenging to dumbstruck. He straightened again, took a deep breath and glanced away for a moment as if gathering his thoughts.

“James has said nothing about it.” Calum’s eyes narrowed.

"James doesn't know," Augustin informed and then quickly explained. "I cloak my scent whenever I leave Jackson. I recognized him yesterday when we met, but he did not recognize me." Augustin looked away this time. "I believe he felt something, but he doesn't realize that I am . . ." Before he could finish, Calum finished for him.

“His mate.” Calum let out a long sigh and pushed his hair back with his left hand as he watched Augustin. “Why didn’t you say so at the time, are you planning to deny him?”

Augustin stiffened as if having been struck and his eyes filled with shocked revulsion at the mere thought he'd contemplated such an action. "James is my beloved and I will never give him up or let anyone take him away from me. Anyone who believes otherwise is sorely mistaken." Augustin leaned forward in his seat for emphasis.

“I didn’t come forward with the news immediately because of the venue and the hesitancy I recognized in him. I stayed in town last night because I intend to pursue him. He is my beloved and I will never deny him anything.” Augustin held Calum’s gaze, something few paranormals could do.

Calum nodded accepting Augustin’s explanation. “I can smell the truth of your words, but delaying telling him is not a good idea. James is a complex man.” Calum leaned back in his chair and contemplated his next words.

Calum’s cagy comment and behavior had Augustin tensing in his chair. “What are you not telling me? I have a right to know my beloved.” Augustin needed to know.

“James is, as I said before, fragile. I don’t mean that in the physical sense. Physically he is a fierce and skilled warrior. Our King, Duncan Adair intervened in a family tragedy and pulled James out. King Duncan put him in my custody and he became James Keith of Clan Keith. He has been a part of my family for a hundred and forty-five years.” Calum kept his eyes on Augustin as he began his explanation.

“What happened to James’ family?”

"His father, Rory, was one of King Duncan's personal guards. The situation in his home was abusive but was unknown to us all and for that, we all grieve." Calum's words were disturbing, Augustin began visualizing the things Calum hadn't said yet.

"His life was pure torment and none of us knew, I can't go into detail because it is James' story to tell. But let me say this, he was raised in fear and intimidation and doesn't trust easily. He lacks confidence and his sense of self is severely damaged." Calum leaned forward as he finished. "His mother is deceased and his father was banished from the Shetland Circle."

Augustin struggled to control his anger and his overwhelming sense of helplessness. The thought that James’ life was an ordeal, became an agony that tore at his heart in a way that was excruciating. “I will cherish him for the rest of our lives and beyond. His life will be as perfect as I can make it.” Augustin vowed. He understood the Chieftain’s hesitance and concern now and respected him all the more for it.

“I would like to see him, today. I need him to know me.” Augustin lost a little of his harshness as his tone was taking on a shade of neediness. The information he was given caused in him a sense of urgency far and above what he’d been feeling before.

“I’ll arrange it. I think it best that you come to him. Talk to him in familiar surroundings. He will recognize you, every dragon knows their mate on scent but he will be scared. It may bring back many dreadful days he thought were forgotten. His parents were not good role models for mated bliss. Be prepared to fight for him because I believe that you may have to.” Calum stood and Augustin did likewise.

"Thank you, Calum." Augustin reached out his hand and Calum took it and held firm.

"I'm glad it's you. James needs someone like you. My Clan and I will help in any way that we can, do not hesitate to ask." With that, he left the room. He assured Augustin that he would contact him within the hour to set up a meeting.

CHAPTER TWO

It had to be the longest hour in the history of time, but true to his word, Calum called him and arranged for him to come to the Lodge. James was relaxing on the back deck with Forbes and Bryn. He was instructed to approach from the yard and Forbes and Bryn would leave when he arrived giving him privacy with James but also allowing James the space he may need. Augustin chose to go alone, leaving his guards at the hotel.

James sat with Forbes and Bryn on the deck and drank lemonade while talking about nothing. He was finally feeling relaxed but still couldn't get that master vampire out of his mind.

“Are you coming with us to the Federal tonight?” Forbes teased, knowing full well that James rarely frequented the bars or clubs of Laramie.

“No, not tonight, maybe another time.” James blew it off as usual with an indulgent smile. He took a long sip of his drink and stretched out in his chair just to suddenly sit up and stare toward the corner of the house.

The atmosphere had suddenly changed, there was a heaviness and suspense. “Someone is here.” He spoke softly and kept his eyes on the corner of the house. Someone was coming and he knew them.

He couldn’t pull his eyes away as the man walked out of his rampant thoughts and rounded the corner of the house. He was tall and solid a picture of masculine perfection. Master Augustin Chamberlin so elegant yet so forceful, he was a leader and the power poured from him. The significance of this man enveloped James the closer he came. He walked with purpose and intent and kept his eyes, dark and smoldering, trained on James.

He understood now why Augustin seemed important, it was becoming shockingly clear. James took a deep breath and held it in his lungs before slowly breathing it out. He felt his dragon stir and rise to the surface to sample the delicious scent of this male.

James remained frozen to his chair as Augustin approached, each step reverberating in James’ heart and mind. The closer Augustin came the more James felt it surrounding him, the knowledge that this man belonged to him.

Augustin walked up the stairs to the deck and stood before James. He held out his hand and James couldn’t help but take it. Augustin pulled him to his feet. James stood there transfixed by the sight before him. Master Augustin Chamberlin was indeed his mate.

"Hello, James." He spoke and the sound danced across James' sensitive nerves. It was so beautiful, so thrilling, and so flawless.

"Hello," James responded distractedly, while his eyes ate up the man before him, his mate. The reality of it was staggering, but how, he didn’t know this before? “We met yesterday, I didn’t recognize you.” James voiced his thoughts as Augustin stepped closer still holding James’ hand in his.

“I cloak my scent whenever I leave Jackson, it’s a habit born out of a violent past. I did not expect to meet my beloved in dragon territory at a bonding ceremony. But then, Fate rarely gives us what we expect.” He raised James’ hand to his lips and kissed it tenderly while watching him closely. The simple act was so erotic that James’ felt himself getting hard.

“You knew. The moment we met, you knew.” The words came out soft but with an accusatory edge that he could not suppress. Augustin knew and said nothing. He failed to hide the hurt he was feeling.

“I knew you couldn’t smell me and the setting was not ideal for such an announcement. I chose to wait and see you today without the interference of my scent suppression. I wanted there to be no doubts in your mind who I am.” Augustin moved his left hand up and cupped the side of James’ face.

James took another slow breath and closed his eyes. It seemed so unbelievable but it was true, he could taste the magnificence of this man. The touch of his hand was warm and comforting and James felt himself lean into it and rub his cheek against Augustin’s palm. He wanted to touch him but his hand would not move from his side. As hard as he tried, it would not move, but Augustin held tight to his other hand.

Augustin moved closer feeling the struggle within James, but not understanding it. He moved the hand he was using to caress his face and slid it around James’ shoulders and pulled him close and pressed James’ against his chest. Augustin felt the stiffness subside a little but the reserve remained.

He needed his beloved at ease and content, not pent up and fearful. The waves of anxiety coming from James were enough to choke. Calum had explained some of it but he knew there was so much he didn't know.

"Don't fight me, sweetheart." He whispered softly in James' ear and brushed his lips over James' fiery red curls. "Don't fight it."

“I’m just shocked is all.” James tried to explain as he rubbed his face against Augustin’s fine black suit. Augustin was a few inches taller than him and it made it easy for him to snuggle into his touch. The touch of his mate and the smell surrounded him causing his mind to calm and making his desires seem possible.

"Let's sit for a while," Augustin said and moved them towards the deck chairs. It was then that James noticed that Forbes and Bryn had left and they were alone on the deck. James sat back down in the chair he'd previously occupied and Augustin pulled another over to sit next to him, very close. He continued to hold James' hand and James did not object.

“I understand that this is a shock to you and I’m not asking you to do anything except get to know me.” Augustin pulled James’ hand to his lips and kissed it once again. The touch of Augustin’s lips was like a fire starter that burned at the point of contact and then flashed through James’ system. The heat from his touch and his nearness was heady and powerful and it was all James’ could do to remain seated and not leap up, shift, and fly them both to the mountains.

He took long slow deep breaths as he calmed his feverish dragon. James managed to ease his mind then found himself studying the stylish and sophisticated man seated next to him. The idea that this man was his mate was hard for him to grasp. He’d done nothing in his life to warrant such a prize and he felt like a fraud sitting there acting like he belonged. No good would come from this, he had firsthand knowledge of what mated life could be and Augustin deserved better. James had a past that could easily crush them both. He came with more baggage than Boeing 747 at JFK.

James lost his mother at an early age, many years ago. The cause of her death was reported to be from a fall. His mother had been a human and although granted extended life and vitality due to mating a dragon, she still died when she hit the bottom of the stairway. What people didn't know at the time, was that her death was not due to the fall alone but the years of abuse and neglect at the hands of her so-called mate. They discovered that later.

James was taught to never discuss happenings in the home with anyone. The incidents were covered and disguised and everyone wore a smile when in public, it was an order. His father was a palace guard and worked closely with King Duncan. He played the part of dutiful husband and father to the community but he was a cold-hearted monster behind closed doors.

James had not been present when his mother died, but he had his doubts regarding the cause being an accidental fall. When the body was examined and the old wounds and injuries discovered, the truth of his home life became common knowledge.

James' life had been worse than even his mother's because dragons could take more abuse. His father took great pleasure in being able to inflict marks on James that hurt like hell but healed almost immediately. He managed to scar his son mentally and emotionally over the course of his young life. James said nothing because that's what you did, you said nothing and life continued in its terrible way.

James and his mother were not close, they shared the victim identity but they remained distant from one another. She never showed him anything but contempt and scorn, and often blamed him for the violence in the home. She believed that if James hadn’t been born, life would have been better for them and her husband would not have been violent.

James knew no love or acceptance and home was a horror to be endured, the only brightness in his life back then was Calum and Bryn, the Keith boys he grew up with. They allowed him to be a part of their family and taught him the true way of the dragon. He spent all his time with the Keith’s and went home only when it was absolutely required.

They knew nothing of his home life and bought the deception that James’ father spun to the Circle. The day came when the hiding stopped and the truth was discovered. James wasn’t sure which was better, living the façade or having his life, his existence shattered and pitied.

The reality of his family made living in the Shetland Circle almost impossible for him. King Duncan banished his father and the heaviness of that act and the implications it bore were difficult for James to carry. He took responsibility for everything, the inadequacy he felt as a son, his father's anger, and his families dishonor and he ended up running.

After a few weeks, Calum found him and brought him home. King Duncan bonded him to Clan Keith and he became James Keith, no longer the son of the brutal coward, Rory Lorde. He had a new family, a new life, and a new name. But the old James still lingered beneath the surface.

Now Fate had given him a mate that was so far out of his league that he believed he had little hope of measuring up. Master Chamberlin was a leader, an ethical and moral leader. His Coven belonged to and moved within an elite section of society. How could he ever satisfy a Master Vampire?

He'd worked tirelessly to try and earn his father’s acceptance if not love, but all he ever got were recriminating remarks or the back of his hand. Rory Lorde actively and viciously hated him and told him so often.

“Come back to me.” The words were spoken softly yet they had the power to pull him out of his abysmal thoughts and back to the here and now. They were standing now and Augustin was staring at him with a look that was not pity but thoughtfulness shaded with worry. “There you are.” He smiled and James’ insides melted at the tenderness conveyed through his words and his touch.

Augustin was careful, very careful as he released James' hand and cupped the side of his face tilting it so he could look into his eyes and see the insecurity and hesitation clouding their brilliance. "You are mine and I am yours, everything else is a side note. Focus on me, sweetheart. See who I am." Augustin kept talking and gradually he felt his beloved return.

He felt James raise his hand and tentatively touched Augustin's arm and then moved to grasp his shoulder. James refocused his eyes to watch his hand where he held onto Augustin. "I'm not a good choice," James mumbled and refused to meet Augustin's gaze. "I have a past and there are things there that you don't want to know. You don't want to be involved with someone like me Augustin." Even as he spoke the words, Augustin could feel the anguish pouring off him in waves.

"You are all I want and all I will ever need. Your past, regardless of its content, is not and never will be a deterrent to my ever-growing love and devotion." Augustin took the opening and dropped a gentle kiss to James' soft lips before capturing his gaze once again. "I'm not a choir boy, James, I've had a past as well and I will never judge you for yours."

James dropped his head to rest his forehead against Augustin’s shoulder as he wrapped his arms around his waist and held him. “I’m sorry Augustin, I am so fucking sorry.” The words came out with pain and gravel and Augustin was taken by surprise when James suddenly pulled away and stumbled back a few steps and whispered. “I’m sorry.” He then turned and took off around the corner of the house.

Augustin did not pursue, he stood on the deck and listened as he heard a motorcycle roar and slowly fade into the distance. James had bolted, it shouldn't have been a surprise but it was. He thought they'd connected, but James' fear was stronger than their present bond.

“He’s heading for the mountains.” Bryn walked up to stand beside Augustin. “He’ll let his dragon loose and try to appease him. His dragon is pissed, I could feel his fury all the way from the front of the Lodge.”

“Why is he angry?” Augustin asked, still hurt by his beloved abandoning him, but trying not letting it show.

"His dragon wanted to mate you on the spot. His dragon recognizes you as his mate and he wants you, bad. James, on the other hand, has some issues to resolve before he can comfortably take his place at your side, I'm afraid." Bryn sighed and then added. "He won't be able to stay away too long; his dragon won't let him. Don't worry he'll seek you out." With that Bryn turned and went back inside.

Augustin stood there for a few minutes before heading back to his car. The afternoon ended in a manner he had not foreseen and it left him feeling empty and alone. Those were two things he hadn't felt in many years, not since before he took over the Coven.

Calum had warned him that James had issues and that running was one method he used to deal with said issues. Still, he hadn't expected him to run so soon after meeting him and having their relationship made clear. Augustin wasn't sure how to take the rebuff, was it an outright denial of their connection or was it nerves or was it both. Difficulty within a new relationship he could handle, but rejection by his beloved he could not.

Augustin made his way back to the hotel and isolated himself in his room. He respected his guards but he couldn’t discuss personal matters with them. Vadin was his sounding board but Vadin was not available. Damn, he needed to broaden his inner circle.

He took off his coat and tie and made himself comfortable with a whiskey. Being apart from his beloved after just finding him was taking a toll on his spirit. He did not like feeling inadequate, unimportant, or unworthy and his beloved was making him feel all those things. The thrill of the discovery was quickly turning into a crushing disappointment.

Augustin finished his whiskey and then poured a glass of blood, it wasn’t fresh and it wasn’t his beloved but it would do. He always kept some on hand and right now he needed the energy it would give him. He thought he would have at least tasted his beloved today, but circumstances made that impossible.

Augustin finished the blood in one swallow and then stretched out on his bed. He needed to think and get his raging emotions under control before he lost all control and went after his beloved and forced him into submission. That would not be a good strategy.

He needed to find out more about James. He needed more than a vague reference to trauma in his youth and dysfunction in his family. Augustin assumed that James believed he was unsuited to be mated and feared the outcome of the union. There was one more possibility that came to mind but Augustin loath to consider it. Perhaps Augustin being a vampire was the real issue. James may refuse him based solely on his species.

That bitter thought brought a fresh wave of pain that enveloped Augustin’s heart and squeezed. He placed his forearm over his eyes and tried to block out the pain he’d seen in James’ eyes just before he took off. He couldn’t read him so the cause was unknown to him other than the obvious which is that James felt he could not bond with him.

The sun began to set and with it, the darkness took over the room. It was a cloak he found comforting as he struggled to analyze every moment of their time together. Sometime during the night, his thoughts shifted and memories of his own past rushed forward.

When he told James that he hadn’t been a choir boy himself, the claim was a gross understatement. He hadn’t ascended to his current position without spilling blood, the blood of family. It was a time of ruthless authoritarian tragedies and the health and welfare of the Coven hung in the balance between blood and duty.

Augustin felt the surge of discomfort that always accompanied the ghastly recollections and he sat up. He swung his legs off the side of the bed, planted his feet on the floor and rested his face in his hands. Would his beloved understand the necessity of the actions he took or would he only see the horror of the act? Having his beloved James run from him had left him with an insecurity that he had not possessed before. The need to measure up to one person had never been a concern of Augustin.

He was the Master, he led his people and they respected and honored his leadership. He had friends, one very close friend and never had he felt the need to be accepted or felt the fear of rejection. Take it or leave it was his axiom and he was never one to conform or beg. Now he was a wreck and aching in every part of his soul for the acceptance of one man, his beloved.

He got up and stripped, perhaps a shower would clear his mind and help him to deal with the agony tearing at this soul.

James tore through the streets on his custom lowrider keeping his mind on his destination, the clear mountains. The area they all went to when needing to cut loose. He needed to cut loose, explode and calm his raging dragon. Leaving his mate was ripping him apart and his dragon was furious to be so far from the one connecting their souls.

James panicked when the flood of emotion overwhelmed him and the need to claim his mate was overpowering. He had to run, he saw no other option, but now he felt empty, alone, and miserable. He pulled to a stop near the top of the mountain and dismounted. He ran through the trees before taking flight and letting his dragon roar.

CHAPTER THREE

It was hours before he crashed back to earth and curled beneath a thick canopy of trees. He wanted to hide, shame and weakness taking the place of his previous anxious fear. His dragon was despondent and no longer fighting him and that was the worst feeling of his life so far. He couldn’t shift, his dragon was holding tight to his form and James didn’t have the energy to force it.

He tried to sleep but it was impossible regardless how tired he felt. The image of his mate standing there frozen in shock as he ran away from him was emblazoned on his mind and would not go away. He dishonored Augustin and disgraced himself, but running seemed to be the only thing he was good at. It became his default reaction whenever things got tough or uncomfortable. He was nothing but a runaway.

In the past, he ran from situations that caused him pain and derision but this time he ran from an individual, his mate Augustin Chamberlin. Instead of the relief, he felt in past escapes, this time he felt small, mortified, and disgraced. But the fear of Augustin knowing the truth and the possibilities of being lumped together with the crimes of his father kept James curled on the ground under the trees.

Come morning, he woke in his human form. Sometime during the night, his dragon receded and his human form took over. He still felt his dragon just beneath the surface, agitated and unhappy at the way things were handled. He was holding him in check, but just barely.

He stood and gathered his things together before heading to his bike. As he was about to mount his bike, his phone buzzed indicating he’d received a text message. It was from Bryn and it read, Don’t fuck this up, James, you only get one.

James read the text a couple of times, taking each word to heart. He was fucking this up and the realization of what that could mean hit him. It was the wakeup call that he needed. As soon as he was heading back to town with the clear intention of seeking out his mate, his dragon began to settle down but also maintained an excited anticipation. Thoughts of his impressive mate danced through his mind.

Augustin had little rest, his thoughts never left his beloved. The churning of possibilities turned ever more negative as the night wore on and by morning, he was convinced his beloved loathed him. The ever-growing negativity in his soul did nothing for his souring mood and limited patience.  He kept his guards in the outer rooms while he sulked in his bedroom. He had no tolerance for conversation of any kind. His beloved had abandoned him.

He would have to decide how long to extend his stay in Laramie. He’d originally thought that a couple of days would be plenty before taking his beloved back to Jackson to introduce him to the Coven. Now he had no idea how long it would take or if James would ever accept him. Augustin stood and reached for his jacket which he’d hung near the closet and roughly pulled it on.

He would call Calum and explain the outcome of yesterday’s visit. It burned him to have to discuss his personal problems with the Chieftain, but he saw no other recourse. His dark eyes flashed with hurt and anger as he looked at himself in the mirror and straightened his shirt and tie. Time to face the day.

He left his bedroom just as his guard, Antoni, answered the door. He heard him talking with someone but paid them little attention as he poured himself a cup of tea. Antoni finished and closed the door before walking over to address Augustin.

"The desk clerk said that there is a young man downstairs that is demanding to see you. His name is James Keith, he is part of the Clan here in town." Antoni reported flatly. He had no idea how that news struck Augustin in the most sensitive parts of his soul. His Coven and his staff did not know of his discovery, they were not aware of the importance of James Keith. Augustin wanted to shout it to the rooftops but there was too much uncertainty so he remained still and hid his burgeoning excitement.

Augustin turned and regarded him without showing any of the emotion that was currently crushing in upon him. “Send him up, I will see him.” Antoni turned back to the door and gave the clerk Augustin’s direction.

"You and Nef please remain outside in the hallway while I meet with Mr. Keith." Both men nodded and left. Augustin knew they would not be far away, his guards were fearless and loyal. They were trained by Vadin and they were the best, but for now, he wanted privacy with his beloved.

Augustin stood alone and waited and when James arrived Antoni opened the door to let him in and then closed it returning to his post in the hallway. Augustin stood still as he watched his beloved walk into the room and remain silent. James looked unsure but there was something else there too. He looked determined which sent Augustin’s heart to pound. He would not go to him as much as he wanted to take him and hold him, he would not beg.

James was determined to explain himself but as he looked at Augustin across the room, his voice left him. He had failed to take in all that was Augustin Chamberlin yesterday when they met on the Lodge’s back deck. He remembered being impressed with his looks and manners the first time that they met. But yesterday he was so overcome with self-doubt at the thought of having a mate that he hadn’t looked closely. Now he saw the man, the man that was destined to be his forever.

Augustin was cultured, sophisticated and more handsome than anyone James had ever seen before. His every breath and movement was like a siren’s call to James and his dragon. Augustin’s body was lean, yet muscular and he was tall, very tall. His hair was jet black and styled perfectly giving his angular features a flawless frame. His eyes were dark and were staring holes through him at the moment. The look was hesitant and James knew that it was his behavior that was putting that doubt in his mate’s eyes and it crushed him to know the pain he’d caused.

As James had contemplated his own needs and wishes and fears, he’d never given a thought to what his mate was going through. It was obvious that his running had impacted Augustin in a damaging way. Yesterday Augustin had been open and expectant and warm, today he was distant, closed off and waiting. Augustin silently waiting because he didn’t trust James not to run.

He had disappointed his mate. James took several steps closer but Augustin did not move to meet him halfway. Augustin stayed on the other side of the room. James decided to just go to him and lay it out. They needed to talk and resolve the damage he'd clumsily caused yesterday.

He walked right up to stand in front of his mate.  Augustin was taller which forced James to look up at him and hope that Augustin would acknowledge him.

“I apologize for my behavior yesterday.” James began and he saw Augustin lock eyes with him and his heart warmed when he saw a hint of understanding in their depth. “I was surprised by your presence and I handled it badly. I’m asking for you to forgive my rudeness and give me another chance.” James held his breath as Augustin did not immediately answer, but rather continued to watch him.

“Why did you run? What did I do to make you run away from me?” Augustin’s voice was clear but the hurt he suffered was clear in his tone and it affected James’ dragon. The beast rolled and whined and pushed to be released to comfort his mate.

"I was scared, scared of everything you meant to me, scared I wouldn't measure up, just scared. You did nothing wrong, Augustin." James tried not to squirm under the heavy gaze of his mate.

Augustin was watching him closely, most likely checking for truth in his words. It bothered James that his mate distrusted him but it was all he deserved, considering his cowardly behavior of yesterday.

James was relieved but also tensed up when Augustin took a slow lazy step towards him. “Are you scared now?” Augustin asked. He held James in what felt like a trance as he approached and spoke so softly and held James’ gaze so fast.

"No, all I feel now is the shame at my weakness and regret that I hurt you." James was speaking from his heart, he knew nothing else would convince his mate, the Master Vampire. "I don't want to lose you, Augustin." That sentence had Augustin's walls crumbling.

Augustin planned to remain firm and strong in the face of his runaway beloved, but the pain on James' face had his resolve collapsing around him. Augustin took the final step towards him and reached out taking James in his arms. He was pleased when James did not resist and went willingly in his arms and pressed himself against Augustin's chest seeking the comfort and warmth that was offered.

Augustin had not expected James to return so soon, if at all. His doubts had grown over the evening to the point he wondered if James would be lost to him forever. It all fed into the dark mood he was in when he arose and the poor treatment he bestowed on his guards. He would apologize later.

Right now, all that mattered in his world was that James, his beloved, was in his arms and holding him tightly. James felt like home and Augustin wanted to cradle him in his arms for eternity. The emotion was spilling and James began to tremble while pressing his face against Augustin’s shoulder. He was crying and Augustin was shattered. He pushed James’ curls out of the way and pressed a kiss to the side of his face. Augustin tasted the tears and his heart bled.

"You will never lose me, my sweetheart. Even if you run, I will find you, I will always find you. You are the beloved of the Master and I will gladly move mountains to please you." Augustin rubbed his cheek against the side of James' head loving the feel of his soft curls against his skin.

James was everything Augustin had ever wanted or dreamed of in a partner and so much more. James was strong yet vulnerable, loving yet cautious and bold yet yielding, he was the whole package and Augustin would not lose him.

Augustin held James close rubbing his back and gently caressing his face. He calmed the man and the beast. Augustin could feel very distinctly the beast within the shell. His vampire nature was reaching out to the dragon and the dragon was reaching back. Even if James wasn’t completely sure at this point what he wanted, his dragon was full of clarity and ready to move ahead. It gave Augustin the hope that he needed following his dark night.

"Talk to me James, tell me why you are scared. What is it that you fear?" Augustin continued to hold him as he spoke lightly against his ear. "Tell me, sweetheart." He urged. He felt James shutter as he took a deep breath. James' hands gripped Augustin by the sides and held on as if afraid one of them was about to run away.

“My father abused me and my mother.” James’ voice was blunt and rough. Augustin knew some of what he referred. Calum had given him a vague understanding of James’ background. “He abused his true mate and ultimately she died. Dragons can only reproduce with their true mates, so obviously my mother was his true mate.” James began to shake in powerful waves but did not let go of Augustin, his anchor.

Augustin managed to steer them over to the sofa and sat them both down. Augustin never let go of James and kept him wrapped in his arms as James’ shaking subsided for a moment and he began to speak again.

“He made our lives a living hell until ultimately she fell down a flight of stairs. His involvement in the fall is unknown but the abuse became apparent when her body was taken to the medical center. Then they questioned me and examined me and all the secrets were free. It was an awful life and an awful freedom.” James took several deep breaths and rubbed his face against Augustin’s shoulder. It took him a few minutes to begin again.

“What if I have the same propensity as my father, what if I hurt you?” James lifted his head to stare up at Augustin with his distress written so clearly in his eyes.

"I am not a human woman, James, I can take care of myself," Augustin reassured.

"That's not the point Augustin, what if I hurt you? I could never forgive myself if I hurt you. I would surely die." James' voice rose with the upset he was feeling and he gripped Augustin tighter.

“I doubt those words were ever uttered by your father, which sets you apart. Only a coward would use their strength against a woman and a child and you are no coward James.” Augustin threaded his long fingers through James’ curls and held him close to his shoulder giving him the support he was craving.

"But I was a coward." James drew in a ragged breath. "I told no one, I willingly kept his secret and allowed him to hide." James went on to describe the events in his life that Calum had told him about and finished with the fact that his father had dishonored their name. Augustin planted several kisses on the side of James' head in an effort to calm and comfort his beloved. James was equating himself with the monster that was his father and that was false.

“You were young and under the control of your father, there was little you could have done. As for your name, you are James Keith an honorable man on an honorable quest. Most important of all, you are my beloved.” Augustin would fight him until he understood he was not to blame for his father and he was not his father.

“I am also James Lorde son of Rory Lorde, a monster who abused his family.” James was not letting go and Augustin needed for him to let go of the responsibility even if just a little.

“Didn’t your mother ever try to help you?” Augustin never new a mother not to give everything she was to try and protect her child.

“No, we lived separate lives. She showed me no thought or care and would often set my father on me in order to lessen her own punishments. She hated me as much as he did, but it didn’t help her.” James sounded so distant and accepting of the cold relationship that it broke Augustin’s heart to hear.

"You survived, and that is all I care about," Augustin exclaimed and pulled James closer. "You're allowed to live and you're allowed to be happy. Don't drag the past with you everywhere, you did your best under the circumstances. You are not accountable for your father's actions, don't lessen his inadequacies by taking them on yourself. He owns his behavior, so leave it where it belongs."

Augustin became more severe in his assessment of James’ parents, the pair were truly horrendous people. His beloved deserved so much better and he would see that he got it.

“I don’t ever want to hurt you.” It was a plea now more than a dread, so that was improvement. “I don’t ever want to lose you or cause you pain, you are my life, Augustin.” It was in that moment that Augustin fell in love with his dragon. The alluring honesty of his beloved was sealing him as the center of Augustin’s world.

“I know for a fact, that you will never deliberately hurt me or find joy in my pain. You are my beloved, we are destined for forever, Fate has deemed it so.” Augustin lifted James’ chin and looked deeply into his eyes. “There is nothing you could ever say or do that would make me walk away, not now.” He kissed him hard with intent and determination. He was going to leave him with no doubt as to who he belonged to.

Augustin pulled him over so that James now laying half across his lap to have open access to James’ sumptuous lips and tempting throat. Augustin wanted so badly to take a taste of his beloved and to begin their bond. But he feared James’s reaction to being bitten, after a difficult childhood there was no telling what his triggers might be.

James was lost the moment that Augustin took him into his arms. He felt Augustin’s hesitation and distrust the moment he entered the room and it gutted him to know that he’d done that to his mate. But Augustin opened and accepted him back into his life and James would not take that gift for granted.

He loved the feel of Augustin's lips against his and Augustin's body pressed so tightly against his. James melted into him and cuddled close as Augustin pulled him over and onto his lap. He was not a small man but Augustin had no trouble moving him about as he pleased. James felt authentic love and desire for the first time in his life.

He reached up and cupped the back of Augustin’s neck and held him as James opened to Augustin’s unrelenting, questing tongue. His lips moved with heat and expertise as he went deep stirring and stimulating the nerve endings within. James felt the thrill rush through him and pulled Augustin closer, eating at his lips and demanding more.

This was real, Augustin wanted him with no reservations. He knew the truth now and there was no disgust or pity, just desire, and understanding.  What a beautiful thing. Augustin abruptly stood taking James with him and surprising the hell out of him. James never had anyone carry him before yet Augustin did it with ease.

James felt himself gliding through the air with each step Augustin took. “I want you in my bed sweetheart. I want to make love to you James. I want to show you what I feel.” Augustin whispered sensuously against James’ lips as he continued the heated embrace they’d begun in the living room.

James pulled back slightly in order to catch his breath and make his own feelings clear. “I want that too, I want to know you.” He smiled a wicked smile and latched onto Augustin’s lips, having missed his taste and touch even for a moment. James was lost in the most wonderful way possible, in the arms of his mate.

CHAPTER FOUR

Augustin carried James into his bedroom and kicked the door closed before settling his beloved onto the bed. He had to have him, every molecule of his body was vibrating with the need to have his beloved.

Augustin quickly shucked off his jacket and loosened his tie before kneeling over his beloved and with his hands braced on either side of James' shoulders, he looked down into his face. James was looking back with the same urgency and desire that Augustin was feeling. "I'm going to make you feel so good, sweetheart."

James reached up and pulled Augustin down on top of him and wrapped his arms possessively around him.  He smiled, his actions speaking so much louder than words. Augustin kissed him hard and thorough, teeth and tongues dueled for control.

Augustin eased back to pulled off his tie and toss it over his shoulder while pulling his shirt free. He was desperate for skin on skin and the sooner they were naked the better. Augustin trailed kisses down James’ throat and hooked his fingers under the hem of his t-shirt pulling it up and off in one fluid motion.

Augustin ran the palm of his hand over the hard ridges and valleys of James’ magnificently chiseled chest. The skin was so hot beneath his hand that he felt it to his depths and it warmed every part of him. So soft and so hard, James was twisting him into knots and pushing him to devour. Augustin dropped and took James’ hardened nipple between his teeth and bit down lightly as his hand found the button on James’ jeans and popped it open.

The need to get at James' innermost regions was a driving force that Augustin had no intention of curbing. He bit down a little harder and the sucked on the abused little nub while lowering James' zipper and slipping his left hand inside to graze the silken surface of James' hardened cock.

James felt himself rise off the bed when Augustin’s firm hand slid across his throbbing cock and then cupped his tightening sack. It had been a long time since anyone had touched him so intimately and never had it felt so right and so dangerous.

"Shhh, I'll take care of you sweetheart." Augustin crooned in response to James' whimpers. James attempted to control his vocals but found it impossible the moment Augustin began pumping James' cock in a slow languid motion. "I got you, my love." Augustin's voice was pure sex and desire and James was coming completely undone with every word that he uttered.

Augustin was using all his control to hold himself back from taking his beloved fast and hard. James was making the most erotic sounds and moving about like a sensual dream. Augustin held his beloveds throbbing member in the palm of his hand and it was impressive, long and thick and hard.

Augustin let go of his prize long enough to disrobe and to removed James’ remaining clothes. “There, naked is so much better don’t you agree?”

“Oh yes, much better.” James ran his hands down Augustin’s sides raising thrill bumps in his wake. “I love how smooth your skin is.” He mumbled as he let his hands explore all of Augustin’s body he could reach. “You feel so good.” He wished he had a better vocabulary and could explain more clearly the enjoyment and excitement he was feeling in Augustin’s arms.

Augustin tossed the clothing onto the floor not willing to take the time away from his beloved to stow them away. Plus, he couldn’t pull his eyes away from the glory that was James Keith naked. He was a god, an exhibit of masculine excellence never before discovered, he was perfection.

Augustin slowly stretched out his tall body on top of his beloved and pressed his stiff erection against James’ and began a slow ride up and down, grinding and pulling satisfaction from his beloved and getting it in kind. He wanted this to last, this was his beloved and this was their first time together. Augustin would strive to make it perfect for James in every way.

The room was spinning for James, Augustin was rocking his world. He’d never really liked being touched and certainly not in an intimate way. Sex had been just sex completely mechanical and no names exchanged. Over the years sex had become arduous and uninteresting to the point James had not been with anyone for many years. Now here he was all on fire and ready to blow all because it was this man who was touching him.

His mate was magical and he couldn't stop staring at him taking in all that was Augustin the Master Vampire. His mate was a vampire and it did not freak him out, no, on the contrary, he was aching for the bite. He'd never been bitten before, but according to Kyle, it was an orgasmic sensation that was out of this world.

"I want you to bite me, Augustin." He voiced his desire and Augustin was quick to accommodate his request. James felt the first sting and then all was lost. His body began to contract and spasm on each draw and his cock immediately exploded pumping stream after stream of sticky cum between them. It was glorious and much more than Kyle had described.

James never wanted Augustin to stop, he would have gladly allowed him to drain him. Within seconds of his last orgasm, the sensations built to another shattering conclusion and he came again so hard it was painful, but it was the best pain of his life.

He felt Augustin retract his fangs and lick the wound closed and his body shivered in the delight of the act. James rolled Augustin to the side and snuggled close wrapping his arms so tight he worried Augustin might not be able to breathe. He then buried his face back in Augustin's shoulder a place that has rapidly become his go-to place for comfort.

Augustin was in heaven with his beloved in his arms and the beginning of their bond already in place. He had no idea or hope that James would want Augustin to bite him. It was so unexpected and the innocence of James' desire made Augustin's heart swell with love.  He wasn't hiding from Augustin the way he had been yesterday. Today he was open with his thoughts and desires, there seemed to be no holding back.

The moment that James’ blood touched his tongue the rightness of their union became real. The taste was fiery and dangerous but also energizing and invigorating. He had tasted nothing that could compare in his several hundred years of existence. He didn’t know if it was the power of the dragon that coursed through his veins or if it was the power of their bond. Either way, it didn’t matter because Augustin owned them both, the man and the dragon.

He pressed James more firmly against him and ran his fingers through his soft red curls. He loved his beloved's beautiful hair and would never tire of touching it. He planned to ask him to grow it out. He liked the short style James currently wore but he would love to see those red waves dusting James' shoulders. He turned and kissed the side of James' head. "How are you, sweetheart?" He felt him shiver and hold tight and wanted to make sure there were no regrets.

“I’m good, really good.” James took a long deep breath and then shifted his head in order to look at Augustin. “Give me just a minute to regroup and I’ll take care of you.” He said with a smile.

Augustin took James hand and guided it down to Augustin’s hot sticky cock. “No need sweetheart, I came with you. You are quite sensational when you come my beloved, you could move a monk to orgasm.” Augustin kissed him again as James began to chuckle softly.

Augustin moved to his left and slid his arm out from around James. “Let me get a wet cloth and clean you up.” He said as he stood and walked to the adjoining bathroom. He glanced back at the bed and saw James watching him closely and realized how satisfied that made him. Augustin put a little extra swing in his step for effect and heard James utter the most erotic sound in response. It was wonderful, life was wonderful.

James watched his mate walk to the bathroom and all he wanted to do was jump him and pull him back to the bed. Everything about Augustin excited him and especially a naked Augustin. His body was without a flaw. Augustin had smooth skin, defined muscles, long legs, and narrow hips with a broadening of his shoulders. They still had a lot of things to work out and some understandings to come to but for now this as all he needed.

James lay still as Augustin thoroughly cleaned him and then crawled back into bed to once again pull him up close and cradled James' head on his shoulder. James snuggled up and enjoyed the calm and security his mate was giving. "Thank you," James whispered.

"Your comfort is important to me, sweetheart, besides, I love taking care of you." Augustin planted another kiss on James' temple. He was becoming addicted to the possessive little pecks that Augustin constantly bestowed.

"I want this to work, Augustin," James said and broke the silence that had descended.

“It will work, James, Fate has deemed it so.” Augustin continued to touch James, running his fingers through his hair and trailing down his side. It was a hypnotic motion that soon had James nodding off.

Augustin lay there happier than he could ever remember being. He'd tasted his beloved and the bond was beginning. James was open and honest about his feelings and expectations although Augustin could still sense reservation and a slight anxiety remaining. James' declaration that he didn't want to lose Augustin had gone straight to Augustin's heart. It was a desperate plea and one that Augustin also felt.

He hadn’t expected their relationship to suddenly move to full speed ahead, but he was beyond grateful. His disheartened anger and depression fled when James walked back into his life. Yesterday his world came crashing down and today it had taken flight. His beloved owned him and it was both terrifying and satisfying.

He lay there quietly content in watching James sleep so peaceful and serene in his arms. He never wanted to let him go. They had much to discuss and much to compromise, but he hoped to convince James to go home with him to Jackson very soon.

James would be the beloved of the Master and his place in the Coven would as a part of the leadership. He would have to familiarize himself with the membership and their laws, or rather codes of conduct. He wasn’t certain of the ways of the dragon, but vampires had strict codes covering personal behavior. It was necessary for their continued safety, security, and anonymity.

Most paranormal groups set themselves apart from the human population whereas vampires needed to live among the humans. As much as they appeared to live life in the open, they kept their true natures well hidden. To be discovered would mean certain annihilation so codes of conduct were adopted centuries ago for protection.

After a few minutes, Augustin's mind stopped racing and he fell asleep with his beloved wrapped around him.

CHAPTER FIVE

Flynn walked into Calum’s office after a quick knock and seated himself in front of Calum’s desk. He said nothing for a few moments but looked pent up and worried as he glanced around the room several times before settling his gaze on Calum.

"What can I do for you, Flynn?" Calum asked and waited for Flynn to finish with several long sighs.

“I went to town last night with Forbes and Angus and we ran into a couple of wolf shifters, both of whom stated they’d had business with the coven in Jackson back a few years ago.” Flynn stopped and stared at the floor in silence until Calum loudly cleared his throat indicating he needed to finish whatever he was getting at.

“They’d heard that one of ours had mated with the coven’s second in command and they thought they should let us know a few details of the coven. I might add here that they held a deep prejudice against vampires.” Flynn ran his fingers roughly through his hair. “I don’t know if this is accurate and whether I should be repeating this at all.”

"Tell me what they said," Calum ordered.

"They claim that Master Augustin rose to power in the Chamberlin Coven by murdering his father and his uncle," Flynn spoke with a slight hesitation.  "The wolf said that he knew someone who had done odd jobs for the old man and was present when Augustin took him out. He said it was cold, brutal and without provocation. Apparently, the uncle got in the way and Augustin terminated him as well." Flynn rolled his eyes up to look at Calum who sat behind his desk with an inscrutable expression.

"Investigate these accusations further. Take Angus with you and check other paranormals with a connection to the Coven. Have Donell do a computer check see if he can find anything regarding the history of the Chamberlin family. Next, to Kyle, he's the best we have." Calum stood up and rounded the desk to stand in front of Flynn.

“I’ll try to contact Vadin but there is no guarantee that I can reach him. I want everything you can compile on my desk within four hours.”

“It will be done.” Flynn stood and turned towards the door and then looked back at Calum over his shoulder. “If this guy is who they say he is, we can’t let him have James. If he killed his own family for personal gain, then he is no better than James’ father.”

"Find me everything you can, I'll deal with James," Calum instructed and Flynn nodded and left. Calum called Alrick to his office and gave him a full briefing on the situation. Alrick wanted to bring James home immediately and put him in protective custody, but Calum ordered him to wait until they heard from Flynn and Donell. "There is no reason to upset James any further than he already is if this information proves to be false."

“Mate bond or not, James cannot be left vulnerable to another tyrant. He hasn’t completely healed from his father’s abuse, what will an abusive mate do to his soul?” Alrick was truly worried.

“They are mates, Alrick, I have to wait for more than just the word of a couple of wolves. If it is true, we will take whatever measures necessary to protect James.” Calum promised and Alrick yielded.

Augustin woke never realizing that he’d fallen asleep but the peace and contentment of having his beloved so compliant in his arms was enough to allow him to rest. He decided that as soon as James woke up he would explain his own troubled past. James had trusted him with the truth and Augustin needed to do the same.

He ran his fingers through James’ hair and he gradually came awake with the most alluring smile known to modern man. It put the Mona Lisa to shame in Augustin’s opinion, which was the only opinion that mattered.

“Hello, sweetheart.” He said with a tone that he knew would excite. James stretched and rolled to the side and leaned over Augustin who was now spread out on his back. Augustin stared into the deepest of green eyes and he saw the light dance in their depths. He saw the dragon staring back and the feeling of acceptance flooded his mind.

Augustin was speechless watching his beloved look at him as if he were his world and the greatest of his possessions. Augustin had never witnessed such intensity of emotion from a single glance a single recognition. His beloved was stealing his heart, his mind and his soul, so innocent and so brave.

Augustin reached up and pushed the hair back from James’ face and tried to let him see the profundity of his own awareness and desires. His eyes searched and found the connection he was yearning for within the green fire that was enveloping him.

“James.” He cried out as he pulled James down on top of him for a ravenous mashing of mouths so uncouth yet so necessary in that moment. Augustin rolled James to his side and continued the kiss until breathing became essential. “You are everything to me James, everything.” He kissed the sides of James’ mouth and then trailed light kisses across his jaw and down his throat to his shoulder. He couldn’t stop touching him and tasting him.

James loved looking at his mate, Augustin was so handsome and so sophisticated. He was not what James had expected but he was so happy that Augustin had been chosen for him. He was strong and capable and he cared for him. James could see it in Augustin’s face and he could scent the truth of everything he said. Augustin cared for him and wanted him.

"Do you think your Coven will accept me?" James wasn't sure where that piece of insecurity came from but it was out of his mouth before he could censor it. He knew he hit a nerve when Augustin froze and pulled back to look down at him with a fierce yet puzzled expression.

"They will love you, James. They will know you as the kind, sincere and caring man that you are." Augustin declared and then smiled. "And if they don't, well they can all find another Coven to join because they won't be welcome in mine."

James chuckled. “You’d evict everyone who doesn’t accept me?”

"Absolutely," Augustin answered. "All I will ever need is you, sweetheart, only you." He sealed that with another kiss and then moved to sit up. "How about I get us something to eat. I've worn you out and now I need to feed you." He leaned over and planted another ravenous kiss on James' plump lips.

"Sounds good," James admitted. "Do you mind if I take a shower." He'd been out all evening flying the night skies and then sleeping in the woods so he was sure a shower was in order at this point. He probably should have had one sooner, but Augustin hadn't complained.

“Sure, help yourself to anything you need, my home is your home.” Augustin grabbed a robe and with one last smoldering look left the bedroom while James headed into the bathroom.

Augustin was contemplating joining his beloved but thought James could probably use a little nourishment before Augustin asked to claim him. Things were going well between them and there was a nagging urgency that Augustin was feeling for completing their bond. Something in the air was pushing him to claim James as soon as possible.

He called Antoni into the living area and gave him their dinner order. Augustin wasn’t sure as to James’ preferences but remembered that he was a meat eater from observing him at the bonding celebration. Antoni was about to leave the room when Augustin called him back.

“I want to share this with someone.” He said and held Antoni’s attention. “I’m going to share this with you. James Keith is my beloved, the dragon warrior is the Master’s beloved.” He wasn’t sure why he told Antoni but he needed to tell someone. He was rewarded with a large smile and a congratulation.

“That is wonderful, sir. I am so pleased for you. He’s very handsome and will be a true asset to the Coven.” Antoni’s instant appreciation and acceptance was just what Augustin needed.

“I’m a lucky man and I agree with you, he is very handsome.” Antoni held out his hand which was customary for times like this and Augustin eagerly took it and also pulled him in for a quick manly hug. He couldn’t help himself, he was so damned happy. “Thank you, Antoni.”

Antoni nodded his head and with the smile still present, headed out to fulfill their dinner order.

Flynn, Angus, and Donell met with Calum in his office as previously mandated. Alrick was also present for the reports. They gathered all the intel they could regarding Augustin Chamberlin and the Chamberlin Coven. Flynn and Angus gave their report first.

“We found only one other wolf shifter who had any business with the Chamberlin Coven and that was fairly recent. He claims that the current leadership took control by overthrowing the previous leadership. He didn’t have any specifics and said it’s what he’d heard.” Flynn spoke for them both but Angus nodded his agreement.

“Was this wolf shifter affiliated with the last wolf shifter who claimed Augustin murdered his father?” Calum asked.

“Yes, they belong to the same pack, one that’s forming over near Riverton. It’s pretty small right now, just a few guys. The information this shifter had could have been gleaned from the first.” Flynn clarified.

“That’s all you found?”

“Yes.” Both Flynn and Angus answered.

Calum then turned his attention to Donell who had completed an information search on all persons involved. Unfortunately, Donell’s computer searches turned out to be more damning than any of the personal interviews conducted.

“I don’t have anything definitive, but the circumstantial is there.” He began and Alrick cut a quick glance over at Calum. “The Coven moves every hundred years or so as a security measure, so this all took place when they resided in Southern France. Augustin’s father, Tabor Chamberlin was Master and his brother Merrill was his second in command.” He glanced around at the men in the room and then gave a brief history of the Coven itself or as much as the web had to offer.

“They operate under the cover of the Chamberlin Corporation now just as they had in the past. All positions within the company are held by coven members, but it looks legitimate from the outside. It’s not unlike how we operate our business of precious gems and metals.” Donell coughed and then flipped through a few pages of his notes.

“It’s reported that the Coven and Corporation changed hands abruptly, like one day to the next, without warning. One minute it was Tabor in control and the next it was Augustin. Tabor and his brother were never heard from again. Tabor and Merrill’s deaths were reported a few weeks later and then business was back to usual.”

Donell looked up at Calum who appeared concerned. "It looks bad for Augustin, but there were no details. There was no explanation for the takeover and no evidence that Augustin killed his father and uncle. The Coven hides its business quite thoroughly."

"It doesn't take a genius to put these pieces together," Alrick stated. "We need to protect James and we need to terminate the visitation agreement we made for Augustin with Archie. I will not have some asshole murderer near my son." He added with considerably more anger.

“Where is James?” Calum asked ignoring most of what Alrick had charged. “Is he still in the mountains?”

“Bryn said that he’s with Augustin in town at the hotel. He’s been there all day as far as I’m aware.” Flynn told them which just added to their anxiety.

“I’ll call James home and I’ll present what we have. He needs to know and perhaps he will be able to ease our concerns. He may know more about this than any of us.” Calum stated. All the men in the room nodded in agreement except for Alrick who maintained his skepticism.

Augustin walked into the bedroom and gathered James’ clothing and sent it out to be laundered. “I left a robe on the bed for you sweetheart. Your clothes should be clean and ready for you within the hour.” He spoke through the bathroom door.

"Thanks," James answered and Augustin smiled.

"Meet me in the main room when you're finished, our dinner has arrived," Augustin added before heading for the door.

“Will do.” Augustin loved the lightness he detected in James’ tone. They were making progress. Augustin knew he had things he needed to tell James, things that had to be brought into the open. He hoped it didn’t rob James of his lightness and burgeoning trust, but he had to know.

Antoni had set up the dinner and included a nice bottle of champagne for which Augustin was grateful. He was still in just his robe and stood the moment James entered the room looking ravishing in his matching white robe.

"Come sit with me, sweetheart." Augustin held out his hand and James eagerly took it. He then sat next to him on the sofa as Augustin prepared a plate for him and poured him a flute of champagne. "A gift from Antoni, my guard." He said as he handed the flute to James. "Let us toast to friendship, love, and happiness."

"Friendship, love and happiness," James repeated and they both drank. Dinner was delicious and Augustin was pleased to watch James enjoying himself. He loved the feeling that taking care of and providing for his beloved gave him.

They were just finishing up and Antoni had come in to clear away the dishes when Augustin decided it was time to talk to his beloved. Once Antoni had left the room and they were alone, Augustin moved closer to James and reached over to take his hand. He held James’ hand in both of his and just stared at their clasped hands for a few moments.

“You’ve been very honest with me James about your early life on the Shetland Islands and I want to do the same. There are things in my past that you should know.” He paused for a few breaths before attempting to proceed. It was much harder than he’d anticipated.

Augustin leaned down and placed a kiss on James' knuckles as he tried to pull his words together. "My grandfather was Master of the Chamberlin Coven when it was first formed. He was a great man with vision and ambition. He made the Coven great and it was respected. When my grandfather died, my father took control because he was the oldest and that is the way of my people."

Augustin paused again having difficulty getting to the point of this confession. He did what he had to do to protect his people, but still, it caused him pain to recall the horror of those last days. He was pulled from his thoughts when he felt James reach over and cup the side of his face. James turned him so he had to look in his eyes.

“Whatever this is, whatever is causing you this struggle, can wait. You don’t have to tell me anything right now. I know who you are Augustin, I know everything that I need to know.” James leaned in and kissed him hard and Augustin was tempted to take it further and forget all else.

Augustin pulled back and pushed the hair away from James’ face. He loved touching James’ hair it was so bright and soft and felt like silk threads when it passed between his fingers. “You need to be aware of my past. There is a shadow upon me that you must understand.” He looked deep into James’ green eyes and he lost it. Oh, fuck it, he surrendered and took ahold of James and began a kiss that entered a new level of voracious in its intensity and demand.

James wanted his mate so badly he couldn't wait. He knew Augustin was trying to tell him something, probably important, but he needed touch, he needed his mate. They had a lifetime to clear up all the skeletons, for now, he wanted this.

James separated Augustin's robe and slid his hand inside to hold tight to his hardened cock. It was hot and pulsation in his palm. He smelled his arousal but wasn't sure if Augustin wanted it as bad as he did. He was glad that Augustin was on a razor's edge just as he was.

Augustin had taken care of him and now it was his turn to return the favor. James felt Augustin moving to position himself over James on the large sofa. James lay back and allowed Augustin to take the lead for now.

His hands and mouth were masterful and James looked forward to years and years of unspeakable ecstasy. “I love how you make me feel, Augustin, I feel special, valued and important when you touch me and when you look at me.” He hadn’t meant to say that but it burst out as Augustin kissed down his throat and then latched onto one sensitive nipple and bit down.

"When I look at you my blood burns and my heart aches for you," Augustin responded, his words raspy with emotion and James answered with a sexy moan. James increased the strength of his grip and began a steady rhythm of strokes gradually bringing Augustin to the threshold of his climax.

Augustin was barely holding on as James’ talented hands brought him to the peak of pleasure. Augustin looked forward to claiming and marking his beloved, but he understood the necessity to go slow and let James proceed at his own pace. With his mind full of the marvelous touch of his beloved, Augustin came covering James’ hand in his warm seed.

Augustin took the opportunity to sink his fangs back into the mark on James’ neck and drank deeply. He felt his beloved jerk and hiss as he came filling the space between them with his own seed and mixing with Augustin’s. The aroma was pure intoxication.

They lay quietly for a while, catching their breath and holding each other. Each lost in their own thoughts. It was Augustin who first spoke as he lifted himself from atop James and braced himself on his elbows. “I think you need another shower and I think I will join you.” He stood up and reached out his hand to James.

James took the offered hand and was abruptly pulled to his feet and engulfed in Augustin's arms. "Already, I adore you," Augustin exclaimed with an indulgent smile and kissed James firm but brief and then pulled him towards the bedroom. They both lost their robes on the way. He couldn't wait to see James all naked, wet and soapy.

They stayed in the shower enjoying one another until their skin began to shrivel and it was time to get out. Augustin was eagerly looking forward to claiming his beloved. So far, they’d gotten each other off three times through oral stimulation and hands, soon he would bury himself deep within his beloved and complete the claim and seal their bond. He was careful not to push too hard, wanting to make sure every step of their budding relationship was perfect.

Augustin turned off the water and stepped out grabbing a towel and turning to drape it around his beloved and helped to towel him off before taking care of his own needs. He was determined to show James through words and deeds that he was the most important person in Augustin’s world.

They returned to the bedroom and Augustin noticed that James’ clothing had been delivered and the champagne had been placed on the bedside table along with two fresh flutes. He would have to thank Antoni later.

James went straight for his clothes and began to dress. "Thank you for taking care of these." He said as he pulled on his jeans and then grabbed his socks while taking a seat on the edge of the bed.

"I will always strive to see to your comfort, my beloved." Augustin smiled and gave a mock bow. He was delighted when he heard a quiet, joyful giggle come from of James. He never thought the man had it in him but Augustin vowed to hear that sound as often as possible.

Augustin was about to suggest they enjoy another glass of champagne and relax when a cell phone began to ring. He knew it wasn’t his because he’d left it in the outer room. He watched as James moved to where is leather jacket was hanging on the pack of a chair. James reached in and plucked the phone from its inner pocket and immediately answered the call.

Augustin felt his heart which had been soaring moments ago, drop to his feet as he watched James casually making plans with someone else. Why would he answer his cell phone here, in this place, in the middle of what they were attempting to build? Did it mean nothing to him?

“Yes, I’ll be there shortly.” James’ statement was the final nail in the coffin of Augustin’s prior joyfulness. James turned to look at him and he thought he detected regret but he couldn’t be sure. He was mentally kicking himself for not going through with it and claiming the man when he had the chance. Now James was going to walk away and the very thought was outrageous, unbelievable.

“That was Calum, I have to go back to the Lodge. He needs to speak with me.” James’ words were slow and careful. He looked at Augustin with remorse and something else. There was a pleading quality to his tone that asked Augustin to understand, but Augustin did not understand.  He was feeling his world shattering as he watched James get dressed, grab his jacket and head for the door.

James looked back at him. “I’ll call you.” He said and then opened the door and left.  Augustin did not speak and did not move. He listened for the opening and closing of the outer door.

Was his beloved running again, did he do something that made it easy for James to leave? These were the questions that cried through his consciousness as he tried to pull himself back together and comprehend what had just happened.

CHAPTER SIX

James was feeling the distance as he drove his bike through town on his way to the Lodge. The further he got from his mate the more his dragon whined and his heart ached. Why did he leave? Why didn’t Augustin say something? These were the questions that were now haunting him.

He brought his bike to a stop out front of the Lodge and just sat there for a moment. He closed his eyes and brought the image of his mate to his mind. Augustin, he whispered and saw the disappointment and sadness invade the image. He shouldn’t have left, he should have explained further, he should have brought Augustin with him. Augustin, he whispered again and felt his dragon cry mournfully within his mind.

He would meet with Calum and then go directly back to his mate. His decision made, he got off his bike and walked towards the front of the Lodge. He was surprised to see Alrick on the porch obviously waiting for him. The meeting suddenly took on a worrying aspect. Calum had said that it was urgent and he had to be in attendance but now it seemed that the meeting had become personal.

“Alrick.” James acknowledged his leader. Alrick nodded and opened the main door.

“Come, Calum and I need to speak with you.” He said.

“Did I do something wrong?” James was immediately on the defensive.

“No, you did nothing wrong.” Alrick went inside and James followed. He tossed his jacket on a chair and continued to follow Alrick into Calum’s office at the back of the Lodge. He was surprised to see no one around. All his fellow warriors were conspicuously absent. This did nothing to calm his nerves.

He walked into the office and took a speculative look around the room, it was just the three of them. "Sit down," Calum instructed as he took a seat behind his desk and Alrick took the chair to James' right.

"Information about your mate, Augustin Chamberlin, came to us, it looks credible and I would like to share it with you." Calum began. "We received sketchy accounts from a couple of shifters but because it involves you, I investigated further," Calum told James about the shifters and what was discovered online.

James listens and although he recognized that some of it sounded suspect, it did not prove anything. "It doesn't say he killed them, just that they died. I know my mate, he is a good man."

"Donell did further research and he has shown us proof, there is a record of the deaths and their cause as part of a European Council report. It states that both men were killed by Augustin Chamberlin who then took over leadership of the Coven." James noticed that Calum kept his eyes on him and it bothered him that Calum was expecting him to have some sort of breakdown or something.

James glanced around the room absently as his mind raced with possible explanations for Augustin’s behavior, but nothing came to mind.

“Did he say anything to you about it?” Calum asked, sympathy dripping from his words.

"He mentioned that he needed to tell me something about his past. He said that a shadow exists and he wanted to explain. We got sidetracked and he didn't explain further." James took a deep breath and then leaned forward with his forearms on his thighs. The news was shocking, to say the least. He couldn't imagine Augustin as a monster, James knew monsters and Augustin wasn't a monster.

“I know he’s your mate and this must be unbearable for you, but please I’m asking you to stay here until I can get more information on what actually took place. I don’t want you putting yourself at risk. I’m not saying you can’t take care of yourself, I’m saying he is your mate and that makes you vulnerable.” Calum urged and Alrick supported his request.

James could not speak, he was in such an emotional knot that words would not form. He stood and nodded to both and then left the room. They both looked sad and James could not handle their pity, not right now.

James stormed through the kitchen and noticed Bryn out of the corner of his eye but did not stop. He tore up the stairs and locked himself in his room. It may be a juvenile reaction, but it was what he needed. He needed to be alone to process what Calum had told him.

He kicked his desk chair across the room and flopped down on his bed. It was too much, the things that Calum said and the man that James knew did not go together. He wanted to talk to Augustin but he needed to figure this out first. His Clan believed that Augustin was a psychotic killer or something akin to and he couldn’t leave it like that.

Augustin’s his mate and he must work this out. He felt a familiar urge to run surge during the office meeting but he managed to stay seated and listened. Once again, he was feeling that urge but his dragon was not on board. His dragon was pushing him to go back to his mate. He stayed in his room for the remainder of the night unwilling to speak with anyone.

Augustin waited, all night he waited and when the sun rose he still had not heard from his beloved. They’d exchanged personal cell numbers, James could call or text if he wanted to, obviously, he didn’t want to.

He paced the room growing more agitated by the second. Finally, he could wait no longer and made the first move. He sent James a short text and just asked if he were alright. He needed to know that he was well.

Yes.” The one-word response was immediate, cool and condensed like it was flash frozen. Augustin felt the distance and bristled at the abrupt dismissal. He decided not to respond and then James sent another text, longer but not warmer. "I’ll meet you at the hotel this afternoon.”

Augustin read the text and then tossed his phone on the bed. There was no need to respond, James wasn’t looking for conversation. He would wait a little longer, but then he was going after his beloved. James was not going to run from him again. Whatever the problem, whatever the urgency at the Lodge, it would be dealt with and Augustin would bring his beloved home.

Augustin picked up his phone and read again the terse responses from his beloved. He then threw the phone against the opposite wall and watched it smash, he was tired of looking at the insufferable device. He then went out to speak with his guards.

James stared at his phone for a good fifteen minutes waiting for Augustin to text him back, but there was nothing. He was hurting Augustin, he could feel it, but he didn’t know what to do. If the reports were true, what did that make Augustin?

He could have easily dismissed the shifter tales and even the ambiguous death reports, but the European Council kept accurate records. The Council was now disbanded but in its day, it was all knowing, if they said he killed his father and uncle then he did. James’ thoughts were interrupted by a knock at his door and Bryn stating. “Let me in.”

“Go away.” He was still being immature and he didn’t care.

"Open this fucking door or I'll take it down," Bryn stated the threat so calmly that it sent a chill through James. James got up and unlocked his door. Bryn pushed it open and strode in like he owned the place. "So why are you hiding up here like a little baby boy?" Bryn walked over and picked up the chair James had kicked into the corner and righted it. He then sat down.

James closed the door and took a seat on the edge of his bed. James filled him in on all that had transpired. He told him everything that Calum had said. “Calum didn’t tell you?” He asked.

“No, he probably wanted to keep it to as few as possible until the report could be supported. Also, I’ve been out most of the day. I caught a scent last night that intrigued me but I haven’t been able to find the source.” Bryn flashed a wicked smile and winked at James.

“You think it’s your mate.”

“I hope so.”

Talk of mates brought James’ pain back full force. “My mate may have killed his own father to secure power over his coven.” He just threw that out there.

"You spent the day with your mate," Bryn stated and James nodded not sure where he was going. "Did he claim you?"

“No.”

"Did he make you, at any time, uncomfortable or try to force you to do anything you didn't want to do?" Bryn asked and kept his gaze laser-focused on James.

“No.”

“Did he provide for you, food, rest, care?”

“Yes.” James was beginning to understand.

“Was he dictatorial or dominant, beyond reason?” Bryn gave a half grin and winked at him.

"No, he made me feel as if I was in control and everything was at my pace," James admitted and he was starting to feel that he was the one who let his mate down and not the other way around.

“When you said you were leaving for this meeting, did he try to stop you?”

“No, he looked very upset, but he said nothing. He let me go.” James dropped his gaze to stare at the floor between his feet. “I said I would call him, but I haven’t.” That was a mere whisper.

“You haven’t spoken to him since you left yesterday?” Bryn’s tone was accusatory.

"He sent me a text about forty-five minutes ago and asked if I was alright. I told him, yes, but he didn't text back so I sent him another saying that I would see him this afternoon. He hasn't answered that one either." James glanced at his phone.

"You have to know that your one-word answer was insulting and he probably took it as the brush off that it was." Bryn was brutally honest. James instantly bristled and turned to stare at Bryn but didn't comment.

“I don’t know what is true and what isn’t regarding his past, distant past, but I would say that he has treated you with great care and respect, which you have not reciprocated. You are going to lose this guy and then you’re going to be moping around for the next hundred years wonder what you did wrong. No doubt Augustin will be off living his life, probably mated to some gorgeous vampire who treats him right.” James jumped to his feet and Bryn lazily leaned back in his chair.

"You're being an asshole, James. I know you've had a tough life and people who should have cared for you didn't but are you going to live in that fearful defeatist bubble forever? Talk to him if you have questions ask them but don't sulk around wondering what is and what isn't true. The answers lay back at the hotel not here in your room. Show your mate some respect." Bryn stood up and without a backward glance left the room closing the door behind him.

Bryn's honest observation was a defining slap in the face. James felt like he was reeling from the blow. Bryn was right, he needed to speak with his mate and assure him of his place in James' life. He recalled once again the look on Augustin's face when he left and it made his stomach churn with the need, immediate need to make this right.

He’d told Augustin that he didn’t want to lose him and then a few hours later he walks out on him and ignores him for a full day. James was ready to kick his own ass for the way he had treated Augustin. If Augustin killed his father and uncle, then James was confident that he had a good reason. He trusted his mate last night and he trusts his mate now.

He picked up his phone and sent a text that was heartfelt and pleading and then waited. After a good twenty minutes of nothing, he sent another, more pleading than the last and begged Augustin to talk to him. After another five minutes of waiting, he called him, but nothing. The phone sounded as if it were turned off.

He'd had enough waiting and decided to head back to the hotel. Augustin wouldn’t ignore him if he were pounding on his door, at least he hoped not. As he was making his way through the kitchen Alrick stopped him.

“You okay, James?”

“Yes.” He said and kept walking. Alrick grabbed his arm and forced him to stop.

“Where are you going?”

“Back to the hotel, I want to speak with Augustin.” He attempted to pull away from Alrick but he maintained his grip.

“I understand that you want to be with him and that you want to believe the best of him, but you must also understand that you could be putting yourself in grave danger.” Alrick implored, but James refused to listen. He appreciated Alrick’s concern but Augustin was his mate and he had to come first.

"I'm going," James said a little more forcefully.

“James, listen to him.” Flynn came into the room and added his two cents worth. “That vampire could hurt you.”

“That vampire is Augustin Chamberlin and he is my mate.” James was beginning to feel ganged up on. “He won’t hurt me.”

CHAPTER SEVEN

Augustin had waited long enough, it was time to go and collect what belonged to him. He would not let anyone not even a clan of dragons stand in his way. His beloved’s place was by his side.

"I'm going to the Lodge. Nef, stay here and Antoni comes with me." He kept walking and Antoni fell into step beside him. "It might get dicey so be ready for everything." He told Antoni as he opened the car door for him.

"I will, sir." Antoni closed the door and then took his seat behind the wheel and soon they were on their way to the Lodge, home of the Dragon Clan. It took only a few minutes before they were pulling into the large expansive parking area and Antoni pulled up, parking close to the front porch.

The place was teeming with activity. Several members were covering the front porch and voices could be heard from inside. There was a level of tension in the air that was palatable. Augustin didn't wait for Antoni and exited the vehicle as soon as it was parked. Antoni got out and stood beside him.

He recognized the two dragons on the porch, one was Angus and the other Donell, he’d met them both at Vadin and Kyle’s bonding ceremony just a few days prior. It was remarkable how much life had altered for him since that day. He walked up to them and stated his business.

“I wish to see my beloved James. Please take me to him.” The two dragons stared at him but did not speak. They looked at each other and then at the front door and then their gazes finally landed back on Augustin.

“Probably not a good idea right now.” Angus offered. Augustin detected a coarseness in his tone that hadn’t been there before and Donell’s expression was less than appreciative. They acted like he was an object of disdain and he was not having it.

Augustin turned his gaze to the front door and within seconds it exploded inward. The dragons reacted but were too slow to stop Augustin and Antoni from gaining entrance. Vampires had the ability to explode inanimate objects by causing electron acceleration resulting in a friction heat and ultimate explosion. It didn't work with living tissue, but they had other skills when dealing with their enemies face to face.

The room froze for a moment as everyone took in the uninvited newcomers. Augustin searched the room with a quick glance and saw James across the room standing with Alrick. "Come to me," Augustin demanded and held out his hand towards James.

“He’s not going anywhere with you.” Alrick grabbed James and prevented him from moving. The other dragons joined Alrick in his defense of James. The room was becoming unruly. Everyone was talking at once and James was trying to free himself from Alrick’s grip. Augustin and Antoni started to advance on the group in response to James’ distress.

At that moment, Calum came from the back of the Lodge and charged into the center of the melee bringing everyone’s attention to him.  He stood there and observed for a moment, Augustin and Antoni on one side, the dragons on the other and James in the middle.

"Release him," Calum spoke to Alrick who immediately let go of James. James took a look around at his brother dragons, all looking at him like he was making a grave mistake, all except Bryn. It didn't matter what anyone thought, he wanted his mate regardless of his past.

He felt ridiculous for entertaining the notion that Augustin could be anything other than the wonderful man he presented himself as. No one was going to take his happiness away from him, no one.

James quickly moved to stand beside Augustin. “I’m sorry that I doubted you.” He said and then took his hand. He was pleased when Augustin squeezed his hand and pulled him close.

Donell took a quick step forward with anger still etched on his face. “How can you let him go to that monster? He killed his own father just to take power, he’s not fit to live!” That was the outburst that undid the room.

It became clear in an instant, Augustin should have taken the time and demanded that James listen to him when he tried to explain his past. He got caught up in the physical and now he was paying for that absence of good judgment. His beloved was given the worse information in the worse possible way and that was on him. But James was standing with him now and that spoke volumes.

Within a second of the outburst, he noticed from the corner of his eye when Antoni took an agitated step forward and began to charge the accuser.

“How dare you.” He shouted as he rushed Donell.

Augustin recognized the danger the moment that the conflict erupted. They were no match for angry dragons. Antoni was operating off pure adrenalin otherwise he would have been more restrained. The situation was anything but restrained as it was turning into a free for all.

“Antoni, no.” He yelled but it was too late. Donell half shifted and roared as a funnel of blue flame came barreling towards Antoni. Augustin threw himself in front his guard forcing him to the floor as he tried to cover the man and save him from a fiery death. His guard did not deserve to die like this.

He waited for the searing pain but none came. He glanced up and James had shifted and was shielding them both with his black translucent wing. The sight was breathtaking, his beloved was magnificent and the beauty of his lover's dragon-filled every corner of Augustin's mind. It was also fortunate that their main room had an extremely high ceiling because James' beast barely fit.

James' dragon looked down at him with sheer panic flashing in his eyes and Augustin reached out and ran his fingers over the smooth surface of the impressive wing. James' dragon needed reassurance that Augustin was okay. Slowly the beast retreated and left James standing there huddled around them.

"Thank you, James," Augustin said as he helped Antoni to his feet. Antoni repeated the gratitude. Augustin then gave James his attention as James was giving Donell a stare that would leave the average man dead on the floor. Donell recoiled at the hatred encased in that glare.

Augustin drew his attention away from Donell and pulled James in for a tight embrace. "I've missed you, sweetheart." He declared and was rewarded with a softly spoken, ‘I missed you too.' Then James pulled him down for a kiss that asked for forgiveness and understanding, two things Augustin would readily give.

The kiss ended but James refused to let go of Augustin and kept trying to push Augustin behind him. James’ dragon was obviously not trusting anyone in the room.

“Donell! What the hell were you thinking?” Calum was furious. “If I wanted the vampires dead, I would have killed them myself.” He cut an angry stare at Donell and the man shriveled and dropped his gaze to the floor in front of him. “Get out, now, out!” No one had witnessed Calum so angry in decades and it had everyone on edge. “No, wait a minute, I have some information for you first!”

Even Augustin tensed at the dragon’s fury but he kept his arms around his beloved, no one was taking James from him, no one. Calum turned to face Augustin. “I apologize for the actions of my family. They had a small amount of information and decided to act on it rather than wait for the whole story.” He glanced back at the others standing behind him and gave them all a derisive glare.

“I just spoke with Vadin and he clarified what took place over two hundred years ago in France. The information we had was that you murdered your father and uncle in order to take control of the Coven. Well, as it turns out, the killings were justified. If anyone had bothered to read further into the Council’s report, they would have known that.” That one was directed at Donell and he visibly flinched.

“Vadin told me what happened and the Council reports support his statement. Tabor Chamberlin and his brother Merrill rose to power when their father passed. Tabor was the eldest so he took control. Tabor was known for his harsh control and violent outbursts, but as the years passed he became increasingly paranoid and heartless. Merrill was a willing participant in all Tabor’s deeds.” Everyone was hanging on Calum’s every word except Augustin. This was his family and his past and it was still all too painful.

James pulled him close and kissed his jaw while rubbing circles on his back. Augustin appreciated the soothing touch of his beloved, but Calum’s words were tormenting.

“Augustin was his only heir and once he reached adulthood he worked tirelessly to defend his people against the viciousness of his father and uncle. Everything came to a head one day when Augustin witnessed his father brutally execute a young boy for daring to address him, while his uncle stood by and watched.” Calum took several steps towards Augustin.

“Augustin killed his father and his uncle that day and freed his coven from their tyranny. He has protected and provided for his people since that day and there isn’t a one that doesn’t sing his praises. Vadin connected me with several coven members and I’ve listened to their stories of kindness, honor, integrity, loyalty, and love. Augustin Chamberlin is a better man than most.” He turned to look back at his family. “You should all contemplate that for a moment. He was willing to die for his guard. His actions spoke louder to me than even the testimonies of his people.”

Calum held out his hand to Augustin who hesitated for a moment and then took it. “I’m pleased to count a man such as you as one of my Clan and James is lucky to have you. Congratulations, Augustin.” He then turned to James.

“I’m proud of you for choosing your mate over the fears of your family. You knew him better than we did and your loyalty to him is commendable.” He shook James’ hand and with a grin added. “Don’t fuck it up, boy.”

"I won't sir," James stated with a certainty that he was feeling to his soul. Augustin was his mate and he would never let him go. No more running, no more pissing and moaning about the past. He was ready for his life with the Master Vampire and the sooner he was claimed the better. Seeing his mate nearly reduced to cinders caused a panic in him that was pushing him to want to grab his mate and just take off to the mountains away from all this confusion.

With that thought paramount, James pulled his mate out through the destroyed doorway and out onto the front lawn. He stared at his mate for a moment conveying what he needed and as soon as Augustin smiled and nodded his agreement, James shifted. He then gently scooped up his mate and they took flight soaring to the mountains, to James’ favorite spot.

Augustin was beyond ecstatic, his beloved had claimed him in front of his Clan and leader. James had chosen him when it really mattered and he would forever be grateful. His beloved was a beautiful beast, large and commanding and yet so loving and tender.

When James looked at him so needy and urgent, Augustin could not deny him. He’d never flown in such a manner before but he felt infinitely secure in the hands, or rather claws, of his beloved.

They ascended high into the mountains miles away from everything to a place that was perfect. It was shrouded in thick greenery and looked like paradise. It was clear why James liked it here, it was beautiful and private.

James deposited Augustin carefully on the ground and landed a few yards away. He quickly shifted and ran to his mate. “I was so scared, Augustin. I’m sorry that I left and then all this drama. I’ll never run again, I swear.” James held onto both of Augustin’s hands as he spoke.

Again, Augustin recognized the depth and sincerity in James’ words. It had been an unpleasant day for them both and now it was time to move on with their lives, together. “I believe you and I also know that if it hadn’t been for the added drama, you would have returned to me sooner.” Augustin bent slightly and kissed James softly at first and harder as their combined lust began to take over. Augustin pulled back slightly and added. “Thank you for choosing me.” He then plunged back eagerly into the kiss.

He felt James’ hands on his belt and felt the unfastening of his pants. He smiled as he thrust his hard cock against James’ hip letting him know that he was more than ready for whatever was planned.

"I want you to claim me, Augustin, right here. I love it here it's so open yet secluded. The air is fresh and smells wild like nature. Claim me here, Augustin." James continued to implore all the while stripping Augustin of his clothing. The fine suit was tossed aside.

Augustin was impressed with James’ ability to multitask. He felt free and a touch wild standing there naked in the wilderness while his beloved stroked him so deliciously. “I will claim you, James, do not doubt that.” Augustin moved to grab the hem of James’ t-shirt and pulled it up and off. He tossed in the pile and then went after James’ jeans as James continued to stroke his cock and squeeze his balls.

Augustin had some difficulty staying focused as his body was treated to such pleasure but the need to get James’ naked took precedence. “You have a lovely body.” He declared once all the clothes were gone and they stood there wrapped in each other’s arms.

James smiled and pulled Augustin down for another ravenous kiss. Augustin steered him over to a grassy spot under an oak and placed James comfortably on his back and then followed him down. He spread out on top of his beloved and reveled in the feeling of hot, naked flesh beneath him.

He quickly spread James’ thighs and seated himself snug against his hardness. James began to thrust and Augustin braced himself up on his elbows to provide added pressure and control. He loved that his beloved did not hold back, his desires were clear and he was not one to hide what he wanted.

Augustin reached between them and found the spot, the tight ring of muscles that would lead to one of the most beautiful experiences of his life. He thought about taking it slow but then decided that would be impossible. He wanted his beloved in every cell of his being and nothing short of death was going to stop him from completing his claim as soon as possible.

James felt the intrusion immediately and it did not alarm or cause him to pull away as it had with past lovers. In all honesty, he hadn’t been breached in many years. His personal demons and frailties had taken control and pleasure had taken on an aspect of guilt and inadequacy that kept him isolated. But this was right, every aspect of his time with Augustin felt right. He was his mate and the need for him was irresistible.

He thrust himself against Augustin and thrilled in the sensations coursing through his body. He wanted to be claimed, he wanted Augustin coming deep inside him, taking him, owning him.

Augustin plunge first one finger and then two and finally three as he stretched and prepared his beloved to receive him. He used the plentiful pre-cum dripping from his own cock to lubricate and ease the opening and channel. He found the dragon’s entrance ready and inviting in a way that had him hurriedly angling to fill the hole with his aching cock. It was an urgency that had not been present with anyone but this one man, his beloved.

He pressed the head of his cock against the now stretched opening and pushed lightly at first and then in one thrust fully seated himself inside the absolute treasure that was his beautiful beloved. He stilled and stared down into James' eyes, so expressive, so wondrous. The tight heat surrounding his cock was destroying his control and sending his straight to the edge.

He locked his eyes with James and held them there as he began a steady thrust and retreat, easing gently out and then slamming back inside. It was delicious and the expressions James was displaying were evidence he thought so too.

James wasn’t sure how long he could hold on. The heated stare of his mate was consuming him and combined with the incredible sensations of being thoroughly fucked, James was about to blow.

He began to meet Augustin’s thrusts increasing the speed and pressure and he could see in Augustin’s eyes he was barely holding on and it was amazing. James had never known this level of intimacy and total acceptance. Augustin hungered for him and he was holding nothing back.

Augustin slammed one last time burying himself so deep within his beloved they felt like one. He held for a moment and then everything broke loose. He came hard, filling his beloved full of his warm seed to the point that some oozed out around his cock and pooled beneath them. He took that moment to strike, sinking his fangs into the scar on James’ neck and holding tight as he consumed his blood and sealed their futures forever.

When Augustin came it was the most beautiful sight James could remember. It flashed across his face and radiated from his eyes as he never broke their gaze. Their visual embrace was deeper and more erotic than any physical touch and it heightened the experience to mind-blowing proportions. Augustin's fangs sunk in as his climax ebbed and the resulting sensory explosion had James coming fast and hard filling the spaces between their bodies with his warm seed.

James took the opportunity, as Augustin pulled his fangs free and licked the wound closed to claim his mate. He pulled Augustin close and bite him hard on the shoulder breaking the skin and sucking in his life force. He tasted like home and it filled him with a sense of peace and security. Their bond was in place, he belonged to the Master Vampire and the Master Vampire belonged to the Dragon Warrior. They were finally one.

Augustin was delighted when he felt James’ teeth puncture his shoulder. It was a mark he would wear proudly and forever.

With their urgency and need slightly abated, they lay together on the soft grass and just held one another. James felt the stickiness on Augustin’s abdomen and commented with a small chuckle. “There’s a mountain stream about a mile west. We can clean up there, but I’d like to stay here with you for the night. I like the privacy, I like having you all to myself.”

"I would gladly stay here with you for a lifetime if you asked," Augustin answered as he lazily ran his fingers through James' red curls.

“Maybe a couple of days or at least until I can manage to think of something other than the magnificent feeling of having your cock in my ass.” He laughed and snuggled close to Augustin.

"Such a mouth you have my beloved." Augustin mocked chastisement. "Don't ever change." He paused for a moment as if considering carefully his next words.  "I know it is too soon and leveler heads would cast doubt, but I need to tell you how I feel. Laying here with you is the most comfort and joy I have ever known. Having you in my life has given me a sense of expectancy that literally lights up my world. I didn't realize the power and beauty that my beloved would bestow, no one ever talked about the experience, not to me anyway. You are a gift I will treasure forever." He paused again and kissed the top of James' head and then added the words that laid James' heart wide open. "I love you, James."

James leaned up on his elbow so that he could look down into Augustin's face. He searched it and found only love. It was there clearly evident in his eyes and his smile and in the way he gently stroked his back. "I've been running for years. Every time something got too emotional or too intimate or too painful, I'd run. No one ever stopped me before and no one ever came after me. Lovers simply wrote me off as a bad bet and friends assumed I needed the alone time. You pursued me and you made me feel worthy. You didn't allow me to run away. Every moment I spend with you, my need for you grows. I don't ever want to lose you and I will always stand by your side." He paused and brushed the silky black hair back from Augustin's forehead. "I love you, Augustin. It is never too soon and the leveler heads can fucking kiss my ass."

Augustin broke out into a deep laugh full of hope and expectancy as he pulled James down on top of him and they began a kiss hot, desperate, demanding and full of love for one another.

EPILOGUE

The Coven’s relationship with the Clan was solidified. Apologies were made and accepted by all except Antoni. He would not accept Donell’s apology. He saw the affront to his Master as something he would not forgive. So apart from Donell and Antoni, everyone else was moving forward with their new association.

James moved to Jackson to take his place beside his mate. Augustin was pleased with the warm reception his people bestowed on his beloved. They all recognized him as the strong, fine man that he was. Vadin and Kyle had returned from their honeymoon and were splitting their time between the Coven and the Clan.

With Vadin not always available to him, Augustin saw the need to raise one of his guards to a leadership position directly under Vadin. Vadin had suggested Mace or Rule as candidates considering their skills and dedication to the coven. Augustin saw value in both men but he wanted someone who would not only be a soldier but also possessed the rare characteristics of a friend.

He chose Antoni because he demonstrated empathy and dogged determination and loyalty beyond anything Augustin could have expected. He saw Antoni as someone, like Vadin, that he could talk to confide in and trust, he saw him as a new friend.

James had opened his eyes to the need for more connections in his life, real connections. He would have Vadin, Antoni, and James and that was a good beginning for his broadening inner circle. He signed the order to promote Antoni and then hurriedly left his office in search of the one man that made his life complete. He found him in their bedroom rearranging the closet. It was adorable.

"I need some attention, my love." He whined as he encircled James waist from behind and dropped his chin onto his shoulder.

“I could let you blow me.” James took Augustin’s hand and maneuvered it to cover his throbbing cock so prominent in his tight jeans. “And then I could blow you and then we could move the whole thing to the bed and . . .” He trailed off as Augustin roughly turned him around and kiss him like his life depended on it.

“Yes, to all of the above.”
