Shamelessly Spellbound (Spells That Bind Book 2) by Cassandra Lawson (23)

Trevor

Melina was turning the tables on me in my game of seduction. It had been my own fault for asking her to send me messages to let me know how turned on she was. My mistake was in forgetting that, as a writer, Melina could describe things very well; from how achy she was to how wet her panties were. She’d even gone into great detail about fantasies of taking my cock between her lips and sucking me off. I’d never had a woman drive me this insane with lust before. Melina was a cruel woman, and I loved that about her.

By the time I walked out of the office, I was seriously wishing I’d jerked off in the shower that morning. I’d wanted to build on the sexual tension from that morning, but now the tension was combustible, and I was worried I’d go up in flames the second I saw Melina. That was why I’d called my mother on the way home. It’s hard to maintain a raging erection while listening to my mom talk about my sisters.

She’d just finished telling me how Jessa, the middle of my three sisters, was doing with her training to perform bonding ceremonies. While we were all naturally gifted with the ability, there were some rituals the Council of Witches insisted on. I couldn’t imagine anything more boring than learning council ceremonies and rituals, but my mom felt the same about my career, and she still listened to me, so I figured I owed her.

“A little birdie told me Melina Blackwood is staying at your home,” my mother remarked.

“Who told you?” I asked. Other than the people working on Night High, I wasn’t aware that anyone knew. Then again, that was probably foolish of me, considering the people on the show did have friends and family. Someone would have mentioned it. Lindsey certainly would have complained to someone about it.

“I already told you, a little birdie told me,” she replied. “I suppose it would be more accurate to say he told Petra, and Petra told me.”

Now, it made sense. Petra was my mother’s familiar, a Siamese cat who had always reminded me of those cats on Lady and the Tramp, complete with big butt and mischievous attitude. Petra also loved birds, as in she wanted to be friends with every feathered familiar in the world. I hadn’t even considered how gossipy familiars could be, especially birds and cats, for whatever reason.

“It’s true,” I admitted. “Melina is staying with me.”

“How is that going?” my mom asked cautiously. She’d witnessed my string of rushed relationships, and she was used to me being infatuated one minute and ready to fake my own death the next. While that last part had only happened a few times, those were my most memorable relationships for everyone.

“It’s going a lot better than I expected at this point,” I replied honestly. “I know what you’re thinking.”

“I seriously doubt that,” my mom replied with a snort.

“You think this is another relationship I jumped into too quickly. You think it’s going to end in disaster like the others because I’m not taking the time to get to know the witch first.”

My mother’s laughter came through the speakers in my car. “I was actually thinking it won’t be easy for you to convince this witch to give you a chance. I have no clue how you even got her to move in with you, but I think getting her under your roof right away was a smart move.”

“You do?” I practically gasped. My mom had complained many times about my rushed relationships.

“Absolutely,” my mother responded. “You need to have Melina with you as much as possible. Have you discussed an affinity test yet? I know it’s early in your relationship, but we both know she’s the right witch for you.”

“We do?” I asked even louder. “I know she’s the right witch for me, but I had no idea you felt that way.”

“Trevor, I’m not an idiot,” she said, sounding exasperated. “This is my area of expertise. I’d love to perform your affinity test, but I suppose your father would be a better choice. I’m afraid I’d end up crying. Tears of joy, of course. So, have you talked about it?”

This was the part I wasn’t sure my mom was going to like, but she’d asked and I wasn’t a very good liar. “We’ve talked about it,” I admitted, hoping she wouldn’t ask for details.

“Trevor Dupree,” my mom began in her no-nonsense tone, and I was grateful she hadn’t used my middle name. “How exactly did that conversation go? Something tells me you’re trying to avoid telling me.”

It never ceased to amaze me how easy it was for my mom to make me feel like a little boy who was about to get sent to his room. “I made a bet with her.”

“A bet?” my mom asked, and I could swear I detected amusement in her tone.

“She said I’d be tired of her at the end of two weeks, a month at most. I bet her I wouldn’t be. The terms are, she has to live with me during that time, and at the end, she’ll take an affinity test with me when I still want her with me.”

“What if you lose?” my mom asked.

“I won’t,” I replied with certainty.

“I think you’re right,” my mom agreed.

“Don’t tell anyone about this,” I told my mom. “It’s not exactly a secret, but Melina’s had a lot of stress at work, and she doesn’t need to deal with witch gossip.”

“Of course,” my mom agreed. “I’ll only tell your father.”

That wasn’t a surprise since I knew my parents told each other everything.

“I’m pulling into the garage, so I’ll talk to you later, Mom,” I said.

“I love you, sweetie,” my mom said.

“I love you, too, Mom,” I replied. “I’ll call you soon.”

“Take care of your witch,” my mom added before ending the call.

As I parked my car, I chuckled to myself. I had every intention of taking very good care of my witch tonight.
