The Bartender And The Babies: A Friends To Lovers Romance (The Frat Boys Baby Book 5) by Aiden Bates, Austin Bates (16)

16

"I've been in combat situations that were less tense than this."

Kurt smiled tiredly. "He's doing fine, and they should be here soon. He wanted me to let you know."

He suspected that Evan had mostly wanted to give him a chance to get out of the room. The labor had started over twenty hours ago, and the doctor was predicting at least one more to get both twins into the world. The babies' heartbeats were steady and strong on the monitors, though, so Kurt was trying not to worry.

Evan's twin slumped against the hard waiting-room seat, still in his uniform. Dylan had gotten on a flight as soon as Kurt had sounded the alarm, and he'd been in the waiting room for almost six hours now. Even Kurt's family had gone home to get some rest at midnight.

"You can go to the house and get some sleep if you want," Kurt offered again. "It's still going to be a while."

"No," Dylan said, straightening up and trying to look alert. "I'll stay."

The relationship between Evan and his brother was still tentative, but Kurt hoped the poor guy would stop walking on eggshells soon. It was uncomfortable for him to see them so stiff and formal.

Kurt didn't argue with him, heading back to the delivery room. No one was screaming, so that was an improvement.

Even sweaty and exhausted, Evan was beautiful. It was a little hard to tell with all that belly in the way, though. Kurt had been amazed at how large Evan had gotten, how quickly. By the end, the omega was practically all stomach, waddling around the first floor of the house. They'd had to move a bed into the pool house because Evan couldn't manage the stairs.

As soon as Kurt came into view, Evan reached for him, their fingers tangling together. The nurses smiled behind their masks, fluttering around the room, getting things ready. The doctor was writing something on Evan's file, her movements relaxed.

"They said it should be soon," Evan said. He sounded wrecked, his voice hoarse from cursing. Kurt fished an ice chip out of the cup on the bedside table and pressed it to his lips. "I told them I was ready about two weeks ago."

Kurt laughed, smoothing back Evan's hair. "You say that now, but you still haven't decided on names."

The doctor glanced over at them. He couldn't quite tell because of the mask, but he thought she was laughing.

"I have, too," Evan protested. "I'm just not telling you because you might try to change my mind."

"You threw a dart, didn't you?" he asked.

"I did not — shit." Evan sucked in a breath through his teeth, his whole belly rippling.

Kurt's fingers ached, but he let Evan squeeze. "Breathe, sweetheart," he said, pressing a kiss to his omega’s sweat-soaked temple.

"Trying," Evan growled.

"We're just about ready for you to start pushing. You've hit full dilation," the doctor said, pulling on a pair of gloves and carefully lifting the modesty cover draped over Evan's knees, "and baby number one is very eager to meet you." She turned to the nurses. "We're at station zero already, ladies. This is going to be quick."

Mostly, if anyone asked, Kurt remembered a lot of worry. Worry and breathing. Evan was too exhausted to scream or do much cursing, unlike earlier in the night. Instead, he seemed laser-focused on the doctor, waiting for that moment to push.

The first cry took Kurt completely by surprise, he was so caught up in taking care of Evan. His head jerked around hard enough to pop his neck, and he stared at his baby, his beautiful, screaming, angry-at-the-world baby, as they carefully cleaned the tiny, squalling body.

"It's a boy," the doctor said, and Evan sobbed, limp against the hospital bed.

"I thought for sure it would be a girl," Kurt said after a moment. "My family is almost all girls."

There was more pushing, more straining, but he couldn't take his eyes off his son as the nurses weighed him and wrapped him up in a soft blanket.

A second wailing cry brought his head back around, and the world spun.

"Here's that girl you expected," the doctor said, grinning wide as her eyes twinkled over the top of her mask. "Healthy and ready to complain to the management about the terrible service."

Kurt laughed harder than the joke really deserved, but he was a dad. He had a son and a daughter, and they were beautiful.

"Do you want to hold him?" one of the nurses asked, the blue bundle in her arm squirming.

"Does anyone ever say no?" he asked, almost yanking the baby out of her arms. He was so tiny, smaller even than Kurt’s niece had been.

"You'd be surprised," she said. "Sometimes people are afraid to touch them." She watched him for a moment, but he'd been holding babies his whole life. With an approving nod, she stepped away.

His son was perfect. That was really the only thing that Kurt could think, looking down at the tiny, perfect nose and the tiny, perfect fingers. He was soft and warm when Kurt pressed a kiss to his cheek, and he screamed like a banshee if Kurt shifted him so much as an inch away from his chest.

"He's perfect," he told Evan, carefully angling the baby so he could see.

Evan looked like he could barely find the energy to lift his head, but he smiled at their son, tears dripping down his cheeks. "Yes, he is," he said. He cried even harder when their daughter was set on his chest. "We did it."

"You did it," Kurt said, pressing a kiss to his temple.

The nurses flowed around them, taking care of the last few medical bits and bobs that needed to be done. None of them bothered the little family.

Kurt knew he should go and call his family, but he couldn't bring himself to move. This was everything he’d ever wanted in life.

Well, maybe not everything. He could feel the corner of the box in his pocket, digging in.

"What time is it?" Evan asked, when the last of the nurses came over and offered to move the babies to their cribs.

"Eight, I think," Kurt said.

Evan yawned. "There's a TV in the corner. You can turn on the financial channel if you want."

Kurt glanced at the tiny screen and thought about his phone, still sitting on his bedside table at home, forgotten in the excitement of their rush to the hospital. "No," he said, and Evan blinked at him in surprise. "I'm okay."

"I'm going to go looking for pods," Evan said.

Kurt put his hand in his pocket, his fingers brushing velvet. "No pods," he said, taking a steadying breath. "I'd rather spend time with you than worry about money."

Evan opened his mouth, his lips twisting in a teasing smirk, but Kurt cut him off. "In fact," he said, pulling the box out of his pocket, "I'd rather spend the rest of my life with you."

"Holy shit," Evan said, staring at the tasteful platinum engagement band that Kurt had gotten him. "Are you out of your mind? I look like I just went through a washing machine in July."

"You look beautiful." Sliding down onto the hard tile of the hospital floor, Kurt held up the ring. "Evan Gregerson, will you marry me?"

One of the nurses, one foot over the threshold, squeaked and turned around. He had no doubt it would be the talk of the ward within minutes.

"You're insane. I'm fat and sweaty, and you're asking me to marry you? You couldn't have waited until we could get good pictures?" Evan grumbled, trying to fix his hair with hands that were shaking.

"Yes, yes," he added when Kurt didn't get up off the floor. "Of course I'll marry you. I'm completely in love with you, and I just had your children. Marriage at this point is a foregone conclusion. Give me the ring."

"I haven't had it sized," Kurt said, "so it may not fit."

"Don't care. Give." Evan tried to grab the box out of Kurt's hands, and Kurt laughed. Once he'd started, he couldn't stop, and he ended up clutching Evan to his chest as he cried happy tears into his hair.

"I love you," he said, all his focus on the three most important things in his life. That was worth more than all the riches in the world.
