Hoodwinked (The Demon Exchange Series Book 1) by Beth Hendrix (19)

Epilogue

Barrett

Laying Gwen’s limp body onto the bed was one of the hardest thing I had ever done in my life. How would I be able to go on from this? My arms refused to let her go. I could hear the soft sobs from the guys and Alyanna. We had saved the human girl who had been in servitude to Bael and she was currently passed out on the other bed in my hotel room.

I kissed Gwen’s forehead, then her lips that were cold as ice. She had only been in our life for a few days, but it felt like years. We were so close - why couldn't we have saved her? Stepping back with jerky movements, I felt the tears start to fall down my face. I know men weren’t supposed to cry but I couldn't keep it in any longer.

All of my brothers looked to be in the same predicament that I was in. One by one they went up to her and kissed her head and whispered things into her ear. My heart broke even more at each face that I saw overtaken with grief. Even Alyanna went over and said her goodbyes. I guess there was more to her than meets the eye. She had stuck with us the whole time and broken down when Ethane had delivered the news that Gwen was gone.

I walked back over to Gwen’s body because I couldn't just leave her. I grabbed her cold hand in mine. “I can't believe you are gone. I am so sorry I failed you. Come back to me.” I heard my voice break as I got the words out. I bent to give her one last kiss.

Pulling my face away from hers, I thought that I saw her hand twitch. I must be seeing things, because I wanted her back more than anything. When I looked up to her face though there was still no movement. I just couldn’t wrap my head around the fact that she was gone. I kissed her forehead once more as the tears that had gathered started to fall and leave a trail down her pale cheek. I whispered, “I will never forget you.” as I pulled back from her face. I knew that I was going to have to move, but I just could not make myself move. I knew once I did that this would all be real and I just wanted a few more seconds of pretending.

I pulled back reluctantly and put my palm to her cheek. I wanted to commit her features to memory so that I wouldn’t forget anything. Just as I was standing up, her eyes popped open causing me to jump back. Was she still my Gwen? I stared shell shocked at her, waiting to see what she would say.

“You didn't think you were gonna get rid of me that easy did you?” Gwen sassed at me as I pulled her into a giant embrace, then felt the guys and Alyanna join in. I knew one thing for sure - I was never going to let her go again.

Apollyon:

The woman I had seen in the arena had been stunning. I had not seen a power display like that in a very long time. Not since Alyanna, and even then this girl gave her a run for her money.

I could envision the destruction that she would cause by my side. Now to bide my time, and then she would be mine. She may be strong, but she was not strong enough to take me on. I was, after all, the King of Hell, and it looked like I had just found my new queen.
