CHAPTER 9

Grace

I tried to convince myself that this was nothing more than a one-night stand, but the way he looked at me, touched me, held me, it was hard to believe there wasn’t something more going on. Maybe it was just my imagination or maybe I was just hoping there was more to it. Who could blame me? The man had just given me the orgasm of my life, and I was still in a state of complete euphoria. I wasn’t thinking straight, and I feared I was setting myself up for disappointment. There was no way to know what was going to happen, so I decided that I was going to make the best of the time I had left with him. Thankfully, it wasn’t a hard task. He’d ordered us enough food to feed an army, and as he sat across the table from me, smiling like the cat who ate the canary, I couldn’t help but smile right along with him.

I looked down at the plates full of burgers, fries, pancakes, and eggs, and giggled as I said, “Wow. You out did yourself.”

“You said you were hungry.” He reached for an empty plate as he asked, “So what’s it going to be? Cheeseburger or pancakes?”

“They both look so good, but I think I’ll go for the burger and fries.” After he made my plate, he placed it in front of me with a big smile on his face. “The burgers look great.”

“Mine are better. I’ll have to grill some for you sometime.”

Butterflies fluttered in my stomach as I looked at him and said, “I’d like that.”

“I’d like that, too.” He paused for a moment then said, “Maybe you should prepare me.”

“Prepare you for what?”

“Well, we all have those things about us that drive other people crazy. What are yours?”

“Isn’t that cheating? Shouldn’t you find out that sort of thing on your own?” I asked playfully. I liked the idea of us possibly finding out more about each other, the good and the bad.

“That bad, huh?”

I shrugged as I answered, “Well, I do tend to think that my way is better…with just about everything.”

“Umm hmmm.”

“And I let my mother get to me when I know I shouldn’t.”

“And?” he pushed.

“I have way too many different kinds of bath soaps and shampoos. I think I have an addiction.”

He chuckled at my response. “You have a thing for soap? Now, that’s cute.”

“You say that now, but if you saw the state of my bathroom, you wouldn’t think so.”

“I can think of worse things than a cluttered bathroom.”

We both laughed, and I as reached for my burger, I asked him, “What about you?”

“Hmmm…I also tend to think that my way is better.”

“Uh oh. That could be a problem,” I giggled. “What else?”

“I have an unusual morning ritual…and no, I’m not going to tell you what it is,” he mocked. “And I’ve been told I have too many clothes.”

“Those aren’t so bad.” As I reached for my drink, I told him, “I probably should’ve mentioned that I also have a tiny obsession with work.”

“I can understand that. I’ve read some of your stories. They were really good.”

His confession took me by surprise. “You read one of my articles?”

He nodded. “Several of them. I thought you did an incredible job with your article on the controversy of transgenders in the military.”

While I was flattered by his compliment, I was shocked that he’d read them. “Thank you.”

“How did you become interested in writing?”

“It’s just something I’ve always done. I never thought about writing as a career until one of my professors suggested it. I guess you could say the rest is history.”

“Have you ever considered writing something else?”

“You mean something other than boring, political news articles?” I scoffed. “Yes. I think about it all the time…I’ve actually started writing a book.”

“Really?”

“Yes, but it’s very different from what I normally write.”

“How so?”

“It’s a romance novel,” I answered and waited anxiously for his response.

“A romance? Hmmm.” He tilted his head as he looked at me and smiled. “What kind of romance?”

“Just your typical love story. Girl meets boy. Boy meets girl. They fall madly in love, and then something happens. Yadda, yadda, yadda. Happily ever after.”

He cocked his eyebrow and leaned toward me as he asked, “So tonight…were you doing a little research for your book?”

I laughed, trying to hide my embarrassment. “No, but you definitely have me inspired.”

He winked as he replied, “I’m glad I could help.”

Damn. Each minute I spent with him, I found another reason to fall for him. Not only was he handsome, he had a great personality and was easy to talk to. Everything about him was just easy. “I never asked…What made you decide to go into therapy?”

“It’s kind of a long story.”

I motioned to my still full plate as I smiled and said, “I’m going to be here a while.”

“Okay. I’ll give you the abbreviated version.” He took a drink of his tea then leaned back in his chair. “There was this counselor at my high school. I’d see kids going into his office. They would be all upset and crying about something, but when they came out, they seemed better. No tears, and some of them were even smiling. I was curious to know how he did it, and well, I guess…one thing led to another.”

We continued to talk as we ate, and after we finished, we both meandered over to the bed. As soon as we lay down, Michael wrapped his arm around me, pulling me over to him, and as I pretended to watch TV, I rested my head on the crook of his arm. I liked being there, a lot, and it made me think back to that picture I’d seen on his Facebook page. Without thinking, I blurted out, “Who was the woman you were with?”

“What woman?”

“The pretty redhead on your Facebook page. You had your arm around her.”

“My Facebook page?”

“Yes.” I peeked up at him for a moment to check his expression, and I was relieved to see that he was smiling. “Yes. I admit it. I stalked you a little before I came here tonight.”

“That’s totally fine, Grace.” He pressed his lips against my forehead. “I may have done a little stalking myself.”

“Oh. Is that right?” I teased.

“Yeah. Guys do that sort of thing, too.”

“Well, it’s good to know I wasn’t the only one.” It was a few minutes later when I realized he hadn’t answered my question, so I asked again. “So, who was the girl?”

“Oh. That was just Alissa. She’s the friend I told you about…the one who lived next door.”

“Umm.” His so-called friend was looking at him like he was much more than a friend, making me wonder if she agreed that they were only friends. “If you say so.”

“What? I told you…there’s nothing to it. We’re just friends. I’ve never touched her”

“Seriously? Do you really believe that you two can remain just friends forever?”

“I don’t see why not,” he answered nonchalantly.

“Because she probably loves you and pines for you on a daily basis.”

His chest shook with laughter. “Oh, she loves me, but I highly doubt that she pines for me.”

He seemed so sure of himself, so I looked up at him and asked, “Why not?”

“Because I don’t have a vagina,” I smirked.

“What?”

“She’s a lesbian, Grace. She has no interest in me whatsoever.”

“You’ve got to be kidding me.” I gave him a light shove. “You could’ve said that from the start.”

He rolled over and with his knees at my side and his hands on either side of my head; he hovered over me with an adorable smile. “In my defense, you didn’t ask.”

“Okay. Next time I will be more specific.”

“Speaking of next time,” he lowered his mouth to my shoulder, trailing soft kisses along my neck as he said, “The next time, I want you in my bed.”

My heart nearly leapt out of my chest. “Next time?”

“Of course…our session isn’t over.”

“It isn’t?”

“No. Not even close.” His eyes were filled with promise as he lowered his mouth to mine. Just before his lips landed on me, he said, “In fact, I’d say this session has the possibility of lasting a lifetime.”

And so it began….
