Ride With Me by Ashley Hastings (5)

Six

After finalizing arrangements for my first ride along with Officer Hotness the next day, I escaped Grayson’s mesmerizing presence and headed back to my dorm to get some homework done. It took all afternoon to get caught up with my assignments and studying.

Afterwards, I went to the store to buy a few items. While I was walking into the store, I pulled up my Facebook to see what I had missed while I had been so diligently doing schoolwork. I saw something that made me chuckle, and I dialed my grandmother's number at once.

She answered as I was crossing the threshold into the welcome air-conditioned air of the grocery store.

"Hey, Grandma! How are you?" I grabbed a shopping cart and rolled into the produce section. Darn thing pulled to the left as I pushed it.

"Lucy. I'm doing great. Just frying some pies for later." Grandma was breathless, so I knew she was distracted by her task.

I could hear the bang of a cast iron skillet being set down on a stove burner.

"Hope you are frying some chocolate ones for me." My grandmother made the best fried pies in four counties.

"Of course I am. Come over anytime and grab a couple." Her smile came through in her voice.

I would do that soon.

My grandmother never stopped trying to feed me, and I never stopped letting her feed me. She was an awesome cook, and living in a dorm didn’t give me many opportunities to cook for myself.

I picked up a few apples and slipped them into the plastic produce bag. "Hey, I saw you were liking posts on Facebook earlier." I moved on to the bananas, still fighting with the stubborn cart.

"Yes, I do love the Facebook." More clattering on her end as she continued cooking.

"Just so you know, when you like a post, you are supposed to click on the Like button. Don't just reply "Lucy Bennett likes this post." I held back my laughter with effort.

She cracked me up, but I admired her gumption. There couldn't be that many senior citizens on Facebook. My grandmother wasn't afraid to try something new. She’d already mentioned to me that she wanted to learn “the Twitter.”

"Okay, I'll try to remember that. So much to learn!" I heard water running, and I put the phone on speaker and set it on top of my purse to free up my hands. The produce section was deserted today.

I rejected bananas for being too green or too brown, and put my selection into another produce bag. "I'm at the grocery store right now. Is there anything you need for me to pick up for you?"

"No, baby, don't you worry about me. I was at the Piggly Wiggly just the other day. I don't need a thing." She paused for a moment, and I could hear the sounds of cooking. "But you make sure you pick up some pudding or something. You are getting too skinny. Men like a little booty, you know, something about cushion for pushing. At least, that’s what I saw on the Facebook."

"Grandma!" Shocked, I started laughing, and someone crashed into my cart.

I looked up and found familiar gray eyes staring at me. "Grandma, I've got to go."

Grayson smirked at me. "Just so you know. I like your little booty a lot." He gave me an exaggerated wink, laughing.

I gasped. "Grayson! Stop." I slid my phone into my back pocket. Why did he fluster me so much?

His gaze dropped to the contents of my cart. "Bananas, huh?" His cocked eyebrow implied my produce choice was sexual.

"Oh, cut it out. It's not like I'm buying cucumbers and lube." I tried to act as if I wasn't embarrassed by this conversation, but I knew I wasn't fooling him.

"I know you need a big, fat load of..." He paused, and I leaned forward in anticipation of his next words. "...potassium. Potassium, Lucy. What did you think I was going to say?"

"Get your mind out of the gutter." I pulled my cart back with a vengeance, ignoring his laughter.

"Um, I'm pretty sure it was you who brought up lube. I'm just talking about fruits and vegetables." His look of mock innocence forced a laugh out of me against my will.

"Go away." I pushed my cart away from him, fighting it to make it go in a straight line.

"I can't go away. It would mean I followed you in here for nothing." He rolled along behind me.

I could feel his eyes on my ass, so I spun around, pressing against my cart. "You followed me?" My voice squeaked in surprise.

"That makes your panties wet, doesn't it?" He stepped closer.

"Grayson!" If my voice got any higher, it was going to disappear. It didn't help that he was right.

"Lucy." His voice was deeper than I had ever heard it.

We were nose to nose. Close enough to kiss. My eyes dropped to his lips, and my mouth parted on a breath. Grayson leaned in.

Closer. Damn, he smelled like the sweetest desire. Wonder what he tasted like?

I reached a hand out to brace myself because my knees were weak all of a sudden. I brushed against something cool and textured, and bam! A landslide of oranges cascaded around us.
