The Longing (Dogs of Fire: Wolfpack, #2) by Piper Davenport (6)

Poppy

I think I stared at the clock a trillion times before we were released from class and I was finally able to make a mad dash for my car.

Pulling up to the house, I saw Devon’s Harley parked outside and my heart soared (while my lady parts zinged), and I barely got my car in park before I ran for the door. Before I got the key in the lock, however, the door was pulled open and I was dragged into a strong pair of arms and kissed for all I was worth.

I smiled against Devon’s lips and said, “Holy crap, Gracie, if you greet me like this every day, I’m coming home sooner.”

Devon chuckled and kissed me one more time. “God damn, I’ve missed you.”

“Me too.” I dropped my bag on the floor and grinned up at him. “You made it in record time.”

“Yeah, left a little early.”

“Where’s Grace?” I asked, greeting Sparky who was jumping at my feet.

“If you’d get your face out his for a second, you’d see I’m in the kitchen,” she called out.

I smiled and peeked around him. “Hi, Gracie.”

“Hi, Poppy. Lemon and I are going out for a few hours.”

I walked toward the kitchen. “You are?”

She grinned, taking a swig of water. “Yep. You’ll be all alone with Devon for at least three hours.”

I closed my eyes with a smile. “I love you so hard right now.”

“Oh, I’m aware.” She glanced at her watch. “I’m leaving in twenty-two minutes.”

I laughed. “Well, I’m going to run and take a shower.”

“I’m gonna join her,” Devon said, and Grace groaned.

“I don’t need to know that.”

I hugged my friend. “I’ll see you later.”

“Sounds good,” she said, and I dragged Devon to my room. Sparky followed, but went straight to his bed in the corner.

As soon as we were closed into my room, Devon turned me to face him and kissed me like I was his breath, lifting me so I could wrap my legs around his waist. He carried me into the bathroom, and set me on my feet, reaching in to start the water.

“I’ve got something for you,” he said, pulling a folded piece of paper out of his pocket.

“What’s this?” I asked as I unfolded it.

“Test results.”

I let out a quiet gasp. “So you don’t have to wear a condom?”

“Not unless you want me to.”

I grinned. “I don’t want you to.”

He removed his cut and T-shirt, throwing them into my room. “Like that answer, Poppy.”

I licked my lips as I stared at his bare chest, my hands once again itching to touch him.

“Come on, baby,” he invited, and I didn’t hesitate.

As I ran my tongue over his nipple, I breathed in his scent and sighed. “God, I love your stink.”

He chuckled, lifting my chin and kissing me. “You like road stink, huh?”

“If it’s on you, yes.”

“How about I take you out this weekend and you can get a little of it on you too.”

I slid my hands up his chest. “If I get bored of you being naked, definitely.”

“Your turn.” He tugged me closer using the waistband of my jeans, unzipping them and pushing them down my hips. Kneeling in front of me, he ran his tongue over my mound and I moaned as I slid my hands in his hair. He helped me out of my jeans and then went back to his attention on my clit as the room filled with steam.

“Spread, baby.”

I spread.

And, holy shit, I was rewarded for my obedience. His hand slid between my legs and he slipped two fingers inside of me as he sucked my clit. I dropped my head back, arching into him and he sped his hand up.

“Oh, god,” I breathed out, gripping his skull. “Yes, Dev.”

He slid one more finger into me and I exploded. Gripping me around the waist, he pulled me onto his lap, correctly guessing my legs wouldn’t hold me. I looped my arms around his neck and buried my face in his neck, suddenly bursting into tears.

“Hey. What’s goin’ on?” Devon asked, sliding his hand to my hair.

“Would you believe that you’re just that good and you moved me to tears?”

He chuckled. “I believe I’m that good, so yeah, but I know you, so how about you tell me what’s really goin’ on?”

“It’s dumb.”

“Baby, if you’re cryin’, it’s not dumb.”

“I’m just a little overwhelmed that you’re here. Finally, you know?”

He stroked my cheek and nodded.

“I never thought this day would come and I feel a little like the other shoe’s going to drop,” I admitted.

“There are no other shoes, Poppy,” he said with a smile.

“I want to believe you. But if I lose you—”

He chuckled gently. “You’re not goin’ to lose me, sweetness. You’re stuck with me.”

“Promise?”

“Absolutely.” He tugged my T-shirt off and kissed my neck. “Ready to cry some more in the shower?”

“Hell, yes.” I climbed off his lap and removed my bra as he stood and removed the rest of his clothes. I sighed at the sight of his cock, hard and proud. “I’m gonna need to play with that a little.”

Devon laughed. “Have at it, baby.”

We stepped into the shower and I knelt in front of him, wrapping my hand around his cock and stroking gently before covering the tip with my mouth. As the water cascaded over us, I took him deeper and Devon thread his fingers in my hair and squeezed my scalp. I gripped his length gently and pulled down as I took him further.

He groaned as I slid my hand up his stomach to his chest and ran a nail over his nipple, continuing to work his cock with my mouth and hand. I cupped his balls, taking his cock all the way to the back of my throat, moving my hand faster and faster as I almost gagged myself.

I loved every second.

“Now, baby.”

I sucked a little harder, flattening my hands on the back of his thighs as his body locked, and he came in my mouth. I waited until his hands left my head, and then I released his cock with a gentle smack, swallowing.

His hands slid under my armpits and pulled me up, kissing me deeply as he anchored me to the wall. “Wrap your legs around me, baby.”

“You just came.”

“Sure did.”

“Don’t you need a minute?” I asked.

He guided my hand to his very hard cock. “Does that feel like I need a minute?”

I shook my head and wrapped my legs around him as he guided himself inside of me. Gripping his shoulders to keep steady, I kissed him and he held my bare ass as he pounded into me. “Devon,” I rasped.

“You okay?”

I nodded. “So okay.”

He cupped my breast and rolled a nipple between his fingers as he continued to bury himself inside of me, so fast I nearly lost my grip on him. Lucky for me, he held me secure, continuing to lavish attention on my nipples as he fucked me soundly.

As my orgasm washed over me, I dropped my head back (hard) and slammed it into the tile, hissing in pain as my head connected with the travertine.

“Fuck, baby,” Devon said. “Are you okay?”

“Other than my orgasm haze being completely ruined by my head wound, I’m great.”

“You slammed it that hard?” He set me down gently and turned me so he could check the back of my head.

“I was joking, honey,” I said. “It’s no big deal.”

He cupped my neck and kissed me gently. “Shower’s off-limits.”

“No, it’s not. I love the shower. I just have to remember that thrashing around in a small space isn’t smart.”

“You do like to thrash.”

“You kind of get me all sexed up and I have to thrash.”

He laughed. “Let’s get cleaned up and you can thrash in bed.”

“How many times are we going to use ‘thrash’ in a sentence?” I challenged.

“How about I start by thrashing your pussy and see where to go next?”

“Yes.” I giggled. “I’d love you to do that.”

We finished up in the shower and then decided the pussy thrashing would wait until we ate something... and I got some ibuprofen.

I watched Poppy carefully, concerned about the bump on her head, but once she ate something and took some pain meds, she seemed fine.

The headache I was quickly forming, however, was a different story. Doc kept blowin’ up my phone and I had a feeling there was trouble back at the compound. I had no idea how right I was.

Before I’d arrived, some fuckin’ assholes who claimed to be part of the Dixie Mafia had started messin’ with the liquor shipments to the various clubs and bars the Dog’s owned. Doc said they had things handled, but I had a feeling the situation may have been worse than he was lettin’ on. We were pretty sure there was a mole, but no one knew who. Either way, I didn’t want to get involved any more than I had to and I trusted Doc. Besides, I wasn’t in Savannah to act as muscle. I was here to oversee construction on the compound and two new clubs that were being renovated. And in all honesty, I wanted to focus on Poppy... not deal with some backwoods shit-kickers about booze.

“Honey, you gonna get that?” Poppy asked, after my phone buzzed for the sixth time.

“Not workin’ this weekend.”

“Don’t ignore it on my account. It might be important.”

“If it’s important—” My phone buzzed again. “Goddammit. What?” I demanded after answering.

“Get home now, Badger’s in the hospital, and one of the new clubs has been torched,” Doc said.

I jumped to my feet. “What the fuck? What happened?”

“Just get here STAT, and rally anyone in the area. This is an all-hands situation.”

“I understand,” I said and hung up.

“What is it?” Poppy asked.

“Badger’s been hurt. He’s in the hospital.”

“Oh my God. Is he going to be okay?”

“I don’t know any details, but I have a pretty good idea who’s behind it.”

“Well, then let’s go see what we can do to help,” Poppy said, standing and reaching for her keys.

“Whoa there, killer. You’re not going anywhere...  except class on Monday.”

“Forget class! The club needs our help.”

“I have never loved you more than I do right now.”

“But?”

I gently grabbed her shoulders and sat her down. “But, I have little to no idea of what I’ll be walking into back in Savannah and that means, I’m keeping you the hell away from whatever it is.”

“I’m not a helpless child, Devon. I can take care of myself.”

“I know very well that you can, but part of letting someone love you is allowing them to protect you. I need you to promise me that you’ll stay here. You’re not to follow me back to Savannah.”

“Devon, I—”

“Promise me Poppy.”

“Okay,” she said without looking up.

“Look at me,” I said, raising her chin and looking into her eyes.

“I promise,” she said, and I kissed her slowly and deeply.

“I’ve gotta go. I’ll call you when I get there.”

Devon kissed me again and then climbed onto his bike and rode away. I felt sick and I now knew exactly how my mother felt whenever Sid had to ride off into unknown danger.

I locked up and flopped onto the sofa, preparing myself for a sleepless night... Sparky, my ever-faithful companion, whined a little. “I know, baby, I miss him too.”

I desperately wanted to call my mother, but I wasn’t ready to share the news of our newly formed relationship status yet. I knew Mum would support me one-hundred percent, but I was admittedly concerned about what my dad would think. Sid was protective. More so than Devon, so, yeah, I wasn’t ready to fill him in on this just yet.

After what felt like hours, Gracie arrived home and walked into the living room where I was pacing. “Where’s Devon?” she asked.

I filled her on what I knew and checked my phone... again. “He’s still not at the compound. He promised he’d text.”

“It’s gonna take him a minute to get back, right? How about we have some wine and watch a movie?”

I nodded. “Thanks, Gracie.”

I poured wine while Grace popped the corn, my phone buzzing mid-pour into my glass and I answered immediately. “Devon?”

“No, it’s Mum. What’s happened with Devon?”

Shit, shit, shit, shit!

“Um...”

“Are you two fighting again?”

“Um... not exactly.”

“Poppy Kenna Mann Wallace, start talking, young lady.”

“There’s something going on with the club. But I don’t know what just yet.”

“So, you two are friends again,” she said.

“We’ve always been friends.”

“Lovey, this sham has to stop.”

“What sham?”

She sighed... loud. “I know you two are hopelessly in love with each other, so the fact you answered the phone sounding like your heart might jump out of your chest, indicates to me you’ve moved to a different phase of your relationship.”

“Mum,” I breathed out.

“Poppy,” she mimicked.

“Um...”

“Poppet.” Mum sighed again. “I won’t tell Dad.”

“You can’t promise that, Mum.”

“So, there is something going on.”

Shit, shit, shit, shit!

“Mummy—”

“Don’t you ‘mummy’ me,” she retorted.

This time it was my turn to sigh. My mother was right. I only used ‘mummy’ when I needed to butter her up. “I don’t know what to say.”

“You used to tell me everything.”

I squeezed my eyes shut. “I still do.”

“You’re very tight-lipped when it comes to Devon.”

“Well, there’s the Sid factor,” I pointed out.

“What exactly do you think your dad’s going to do, poppet?”

“I just don’t want to disappoint you two.”

“Baby girl, there isn’t anything you could do to disappoint us. We love you. Unconditionally.”

“Let me ask you this,” I said. “What’s his opinion on Devon, in regard to me?”

“That’s complicated, because it wouldn’t matter if it was Devon or some guy down the street.”

“Exactly. So, I think it’s better I talk to you both face-to-face.”

“Bloody hell, it’s that serious?”

“Mum.”

“Darling, I promise I won’t share whatever you tell me with your dad.”

I frowned. “I can’t ask you to do that.”

“Would it help if I told you he’s not here?”

“Meaning...”

“He’s been called to Savannah, which is why I’m giving you a ring.”

I gasped. “Oh my god, it’s that bad?”

“Apparently.”

My stomach churned, my eyes filling with tears. “I don’t like this.”

“I know, poppet.”

“How do you do this, Mum?”

“Watch the man you love more than life walk into a potentially dangerous situation?” she asked.

“Yes,” I breathed out.

“I drink. A lot.”

I snorted, glancing at my wine. “I have a glass of red poured, and Gracie’s getting popcorn.”

“Right, so now that you’ve admitted you’ve stepped into the biker world officially, care to share with your old mum?”

“How much?”

“All of it, darling.”

So, I did. I left out the sex bits, but filled her in on everything else. And it felt good... amazing, actually... to share all this with my mother.

“Wow,” she whispered. “I didn’t realize you’d been suffering with all of this.”

“Well, we weren’t doing a very good job of communicating, and then throw in the dad element and he didn’t want to piss Sid off, so he stayed aloof.”

“Sounds like it.”

I bit my lip. “Are you mad?”

She chuckled. “Not even a little bit.”

“Really?”

“Poppet, you’re a grown woman and I raised you right. You’ve never made a bad or suspect decision so far, I trust you to figure out what you want in life. And Devon’s an incredible human being, especially with what he’s had to endure with his mother, so I absolutely approve. Well, unless he hurts you, then your dad has my permission to castrate him.”

I giggled. “Why do you always go to removing the nuts?”

“That’s your dad’s influence.”

I rolled my eyes. “Good to know.”

“I’m really glad you’re settled, poppet. Makes my heart happy.”

“Thanks, Mummy. I love him more than I could ever imagine.”

“I know how you feel,” she said. “And I’d imagine Daddy’s going to visit when he’s done in Savannah.”

“Good,” I said. “Because I want to tell him everything. I hate keeping secrets from him.”

“You’re cute that you think you can.”

I grinned. “Well, there is that.”

“Okay, lovey, I’m going to get your brothers something to eat.”

“Thanks for everything, Mum. I love you.”

“Love you too, poppet,” she said, and I could hear the smile in her voice. “I’ll ring you tomorrow.”

“Sounds good.”

I hung up and joined Grace in the living room with my wine, where I tried to watch a movie and not obsess about what my man was walking into.
