A Vampire's Thirst: Flint by A K Michaels (9)

Chapter 9

Kenzie was nervous as hell as she wandered down a side street but she was certain she was going in the right direction. Her inner voice was directing her and it was leading her this way, it had been since she’d arrived and made her way to Edinburgh Castle and started from there.

There’d been many twists and turns and, to be honest, she had no clue where she was, but her grandmother had said to trust her abilities, so that’s what she was doing. If all else failed and she didn’t find her mystery man, she’d call a freaking cab back to the train station. As she meandered down a street her heart started to thud wildly in her chest a moment before pain lanced through her body. Panic coursing through her system, her hand shooting out to the wall of the building nearest her to hold herself up and she knew, just knew her dream lover was in some kind of . . . shit, she didn’t know what but he was in trouble. Injured perhaps? Ill?

Did Vampires get ill? She hadn’t heard of it before, but at this moment she was absolutely certain there was something wrong. Her breath had been taken right from her lungs with the intensity of whatever he was experiencing, her legs shaking beneath her and her head pounded painfully. Looking around she saw a coffee house and headed toward it, grateful for a seat and some caffeine. She’d rest and recuperate before getting on her way again. If what she’d just experienced was any indication, she’d have some time to kill.

She slowly made her way inside, grabbing the first available table, gratefully sitting down and ordering a coffee and sandwich when her stomach growled, reminding her she hadn’t eaten. She also took the time to call her grandmother to put her mind at ease and fill her in, letting her know that her Faery abilities were singing loud and clear and sending her on her way. Or that’s what she hoped anyway. Her gran just laughed, assuring her that she was right.

“I hope so, Nan.”

“No hoping about it, Kenzie, this is the Goddess’ will. Just be careful, there’s too many eejits out there.”

“I know,” Kenzie agreed. “I’m keeping my wits about me and so far, everything’s okay.”

“That’s my girl.”

“I’ve gotta go, my order’s arrived. I’ll call you later.”

“Aye, don’t forget.”

“I won’t.”

“Bye, darlin’”

“Bye, Nan.”

The aroma of her cappuccino wafted up her nostrils, eliciting a sigh to escape at the same time her stomach growled loudly. Realizing she hadn’t eaten for hours, she snatched her sandwich and devoured it in no time, especially as her mind wandered to the reason for the episode she’d had earlier. “What happened to you?” she mumbled as she finished her last mouthful.

Tapping her chin as she stared out into the darkness, Kenzie sent a quick prayer up to the Goddess. Send him some of my strength, please, to help him through whatever ails him. I’ve no idea what’s happening, but I know something is. He needs our help, so can you help me to help him? Please? I never ask you for anything, not ever, but I’m asking now, and it’s not for me . . . well, not exactly. Send him strength and help him to find me and I wouldn’t mind some help too, if that pleases you to do that. Show me the way to him, so we can be together . . . and so I can, hopefully, get out of here. I have to admit, Goddess, I’m not exactly having much fun tonight. Not here, not on my own anyway. Maybe your plan will change that, once he finds me, or I find him. Okay, sorry to have taken up so much of your time. I’ll shut up now and leave you be.

Kenzie shook her head at herself for babbling on. Jeez, the Goddess had far more important things to do with her time than to listen to her garbled prayer, but she was nervous . . . and more than a little excited. She felt like a teenager again and it was obvious by the way she’d digressed in her plea to the Goddess. Normally if she asked the Goddess for something it was always to help someone else who was in trouble in some way, and she’d ask in a quick, succinct manner. Never before had she blathered on like that. Her face blushed with embarrassment and she shook her head, seeing her reflection in the window as she finished her coffee before leaving money for the bill and checking the time.

Dang, she’d spent far longer dallying in the café than she’d thought. “Get moving,” she chastised herself, suddenly feeling as if she should be somewhere soon. The feeling growing inside her as she walked outside, instinctively turning right and knowing she was going in the right direction.

“Thank you.” She smiled, tilting her face upwards for a moment as her feet sped up, taking her deeper into Edinburgh.
