Almost Human: Book One: Miles by J. M. Aring (21)

Naomi looked ragged, stressed beyond belief when Shawn caught sight of her in the airport. He figured the various people around them was a factor, with the super senses and everything, but it seemed worse. She had dark circles under her deep gray eyes, her lips chapped where she'd been chewing on them constantly. Where she stood leaning against the wall outside of his gate she was wringing her hands, her leg bouncing anxiously even as he walked up.

“You look terrible.” Shawn muttered, watching as the Alpha gave a frustrated sigh and ran her hand through her hair for what had to be the hundredth time that day from the looks of it.

“I'm fine.” She whispered, sounding anything but, her voice wobbly and cracking. She really was concerned for Miles...

Shawn kept quiet until they reached the parking garage, Naomi leading him to a deep blue jeep. Once inside it he turned to Naomi, gingerly squeezing her shoulder. “We'll find him, I know we will.”

Naomi glanced over to him and gave him a very small, couple-second-long smile before she looked away, heaving another heavy sigh, shaking her head. “Yeah. I just...”

“I know.” He settled back into the seat, closing his eyes, as Naomi started up the vehicle and started off to the north, aiming to leave the city.

It was a little odd, sitting like this, with someone he knew was supernatural, feeling a faint... aura from her. He couldn't really describe it, just something very raw and electric like he felt from himself. He guessed all the Supernatural beings had a little bit of magic to them, but he had trouble really concentrating on it, the feeling very unsteady. He tried to focus on it, trying to distinguish any intricacies to the energy.

It felt, not exactly like his, now that he was focusing on it, it felt more like a caged flame, burning and flaring at random, like the energy was unsettled. Was that Naomi's wolf? He'd figured Naomi would have more control over her wolf... he guessed the stress was getting to her worse than she showed.

“Do you want me to drive for a bit? You look like you could use some rest.”

Naomi jumped, and Shawn stared. He actually surprised her? She huffed, rubbing at her face with a frown. “I'm fine. Thanks.” That seemed like a total lie, she looked so ragged, more than he'd ever thought possible for her, especially considering what she was.

“Naomi, you won't do anyone any good if you're tired.”

The Alpha sighed, her shoulders sagging in defeat. “I know...” She pulled over into an empty lot of what looked like an abandoned convenience store. They switched spaces, Naomi immediately reclining the passenger seat with a little content grumble. Shawn got back onto the mostly empty road. It was still fairly dark outside, street lamps and civilization getting fewer and farther between as they went on. He had no idea really where they were going, just in whatever direction Naomi could sense Miles from, he guessed. How did that work? If her Alpha senses were strong enough to pick up Miles from as far away as they were, how hadn't she found that Nikolas guy yet?

She did have the windows down... maybe she was tracking him by scent, like a bloodhound.

Shawn glanced over to Naomi; she wasn't quite asleep yet, her eyes half-lidded staring out at the passing trees. She had rolled down the passenger side window as well, taking deep breaths in as they rode along. So, it was by scent? That was a little silly.

Shawn could just picture Miles, his head hanging out the window as he drove, tongue lolling and just inviting every bad dog joke that Shawn could come up with.

He really missed Miles... He wondered if maybe they could do this, a sort of... road trip. Just the three of them together, going wherever the roads lead them. Or wherever the werewolf noses lead them. Shawn felt his lips twitch and he shook his head, focusing back on the empty road.

About four hours later, Shawn was pulling over into a rest area, after his own legs were starting to feel like they had fallen off his body, and Naomi had been tossing and turning, growing more jittery by the second.

She groaned as she stepped out of the Jeep, finding the nearest bench to help with stretching her legs. Shawn wandered over to the vending machines to get some junk to hold them over until they pulled off to gas up.

He was just squatting down to gather up his bounty when he felt a pulse of energy, something incredibly close by. He paused, glancing around the rest area, finding Naomi still at the picnic tables, no reason for the energy to come from her. It was somewhat familiar, though he didn't know why it would be, considering he'd only gained the ability to feel... auras or whatever this was recently.

Shawn stood up, abandoning the vending machine to follow the pulse. He wandered to the edge of the rest area, toward a small grouping of trees. It was stronger here, and the pulsing throb of energy had turned into a constant, powerful blaze. Shawn stepped closer and a split second later it was like the trees had exploded, bark and branches splintering as something huge broke through them. It took off away from Shawn, but it was just enough of a glimpse for Shawn to tell it was Miles, a wolfed-out Miles for some reason, but it was definitely Miles.

“Naomi!” Shawn called, sprinting back to the Jeep, Naomi was right beside him, her eyes wide, glancing back at the trees. She probably had sensed it was him after Miles burst out of the trees.

“I'll drive, just keep an eye out for him.” Naomi muttered, barely waiting long enough for Shawn to get in his seat before she was starting up and peeling out of the rest area. Shawn watched for Miles, feeling out for the faint pulse of energy he could feel further to the north where they were heading.

Shawn couldn't help but worry, though, as they kept driving further and further north, more and more trees cropping up along the road. Miles was shifted, fully and completely, and he ran when he saw Shawn. Miles hadn't shifted out of his wolf shape, whereas the last time Shawn saw Miles shifted he could only hold the form for a couple of minutes. Yet, whenever Shawn caught glimpses of a hulking dark shape through the trees it was still definitely Miles, still definitely fully shifted.

There wasn't something right, here. Shawn wondered what exactly Miles had gotten himself into.
