Chapter 17

I slept blissfully, and woke up more refreshed than I’d felt in months. The warm sensation of my bed, coupled with my intense dreams of mind-blowing sex with Aidan, left me with the sweetest slumber in recent memory. I rolled over and hit the buzzer on my alarm clock at my usual seven a.m., and then snoozed for five more minutes.

I had an avalanche of work to do on the Chase Reynolds case. With all the time I’d lost at Aidan’s cabin, I was way behind schedule. I’d have to ask for an extension from the judge, something I dreaded.

I made my way downstairs, and sifted through the documents on my desk, trying to make sense of them. For starters, the details of the case weren’t adding up. Chase Reynolds had been on only a few dates with Charlotte Smith before she turned up dead. Was there a jealous ex-husband or a stalker boyfriend hiding in the bushes on that night? Maybe Charlotte’s jealous ex had intended to kill Chase and not her. Or maybe Chase Reynolds hadn’t been there at all that night. Chase’s clothes were found at the scene, but he couldn’t remember anything from that horrific evening.

I assumed he’d blocked it all out, but maybe there was a deeper explanation. Although I didn’t have concrete proof, I believed in Chase’s innocence. Something told me he was telling the truth. And when I thought about it now, I believed him even more. If he’d had feelings for Charlotte after such a short time, the way Aidan had feelings for me, there was no way he’d hurt her. Aidan said that it was instinct for him to lay down his life to protect me. He’d never murder me. Chase’s instincts were the same as Aidan’s, based on centuries of powerful fae magic.

I heard a rustle outside the apartment complex, and ran to the window to see what had made the noise. I thought it might be a bear that’d wandered into the area, waking from hibernation, hungry and raiding the trash bins around the complex. The sun was just now rising, and it was still too dark outside to see. The lights that usually illuminated the parking lot outside my unit were off.

And where was Aidan? He’d left and he hadn’t written me a note.

My heart raced inside my chest. Everything in my body wanted Aidan here with me, watching over me, and keeping me safe. The idea of his warmth and the protective armor of his body around mine was more comforting than I cared to admit. I massaged my neck, imagining him behind me and his hands gliding over my body.

I picked up my phone and dialed his number. It rang once before I felt foolish and hung up, without even leaving a message. He obviously had somewhere he needed to be this morning. He still had his restaurant, The Silver Eclipse Café, to run. I wasn’t going to the type of woman to constantly pester him when he had work to do, too.

But then, half an hour later, Aidan arrived at my doorstep, out of breath and covered in ice.

“Where were you?” I demanded. “Never mind. That came out wrong. I was just surprised when I woke up and you were gone.”

His eyes bore into mine with a calm, steely gaze. I could tell he wanted to tell me something, but he held back.

“I had to take care of something last minute in Black Oak.” He paused. “Nothing for you to worry about. I just had to get it out of the way, since I knew we’d be so busy with the case.”

My eyes widened as I smiled. “We’d be busy with the case? What do you mean?”

“You heard Dominic. I’m responsible for you now. And besides, I’m not leaving you unguarded again when this case has suddenly become so high-profile. You’re exposed to more dangers than you know. It tore me up inside to leave you this morning.”

His eyes glowed with emotion, and his mouth curved into a sexy, enticing smile. It was hard to concentrate on Aidan’s words when he was so damn attractive. His muscular physique called to me so longingly from underneath his tight waffle T-shirt and his jeans cupped his ass in just the right way.

“That’s really sweet of you,” I smiled. “But you don’t have to follow me around like my personal bodyguard. I’m interviewing potential witnesses, and that might make them nervous. Besides, there’s attorney-client privilege to think about. Whatever Chase Reynolds says to me is confidential. If you’re there, you could be deposed and put on the witness stand. I can’t risk it.”

I brushed the back of Aidan’s hand with my fingertips. The feel of his skin sent electric sparks flying through my nerve endings. It was hard to break myself away from him. The way he looked at me melted me to my core. I couldn’t help but be mesmerized by every inch of him.

“Look, I’ll stay back and you won’t even notice me,” he smiled sheepishly.

“I find that hard to believe.” I arched my eyebrow at him. “You’re kind of hard to miss.”

I gazed at his tall, masculine physique, and his dashing, stop-traffic good looks. There was no way any woman in her right mind wouldn’t notice Aidan.

“Trust me, you won’t even know I’m there.”

“Well, I guess I could use the help carrying my stuff,” I smirked.

I hefted a banker box of file folders, my laptop bag, and my heavily laden purse all into his muscular arms. His biceps tensed for a moment as he shuffled the cumbersome load.

“I didn’t know lawyer work was such good exercise.” He winked at me playfully. “Where are we headed first?”

I squinted out the front window into the rising winter sun, still hanging low on the horizon. We’d only get a few hours of daylight today, and then the danger from Dominic’s shifters would increase for us again when night fell. I’d have to move fast during the daytime, to make the most of the sunlight.

“We’ll head to my office first. I have a few leads I’ve been working on and the rest of the case files are there. Then, I want to ask around a few places, and see if I can find more information from potential witnesses.” I paused. “It’s really boring stuff. I’ll understand if you want to hang back or go catch up on work at The Silver Eclipse.”

I secretly wanted him to stay by my side, but I didn’t want him to be too needy.

“I told you I’m coming with you. I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

* * *

The Law Office of Arthur Percival Lane, Esquire wasn’t much to look at. It was a low, rectangular brick building on the end of Main Street in Bond. It had a steep metal roof, black shutters, and a curved concrete path leading up to the front door. The sidewalk was always shoveled thanks to my boss, Arthur P. Lane, or Percy as he liked to be called.

Mr. Lane, Esquire (and he always wanted people to use the Esquire) started his law firm back in the 1960s to handle the contracts of the state’s newly rich oil tycoons. He hadn’t meant to stay in Bond longer than a few years, and yet, he was still here. Alaska does that to people, or so I’m told.

When I arrived in Bond, I had no idea what to expect. It wasn’t the kind of place you could tour beforehand, so I took the job sight unseen. The firm’s simple and horrendously outdated website should’ve been a tip-off, but I chose to ignore it. I was certain that the quaint charm of a small-town law firm would more than make up for any rough around the edges aspects of the place.

As the only law office in Bond, Mr. Lane’s clients were not only oil prospectors. He also handled family law matters, housing disputes, and even the occasional criminal defense. He’d never defended a murder case, and he was hesitant when I suggested we represent Chase Reynolds as a pro-bono client. Chase certainly didn’t have the money to hire a proper defense team, and the public defender’s office in town was a sham.

I inserted my key into the office’s lock, and pushed the front door open into the small reception area. It was a tiny lobby, no more than the size of a standard room, with a colorful braided rug in the center. The law firm had no secretary to speak of, only the occasional volunteer from town when a client, unable to pay their bill, needed to trade work for legal services.

Since I’d started working at the firm, I’d hardly seen Mr. Lane in the office at all. I liked that he gave me responsibility over my cases, and he didn’t hover too much. Mr. Lane warned me when he hired me that he kept odd hours, and would sometimes be gone for weeks at a time without warning. When the weather got too tough for him, he flew his float plane into Anchorage, and then took a commercial jet to Hawaii for a week or two. He’d come back tan and rested, and that would help get him through the rest of the bitterly cold winter. If the vacation pictures on his office wall were any indication, he loved the sunshine of Hawaii almost as much as he cherished Alaska’s untamed wilderness.

“You, wait here,” I motioned Aidan towards the brown tweed couch in the lounge area. “I’ll just be in my office in the next room working, so if anything goes wrong, you’ll hear it.”

“Wow, so professional,” he laughed. His eyes crinkled in that sexy way of his when he smiled. I couldn’t help it that my mind wandered to dirty places when I was around Aidan. But I couldn’t let his sexy-as-hell ass distract me from the most important case of my career.

I had to keep all my deliciously dirty thoughts out of my head, at least until I made some headway into Chase’s defense. Time was running out, and I’d hardly come up with anything to prove his innocence. There were depositions to file, witnesses to interview, and most of all, I had to find Chase an alibi for the night of Charlotte’s murder.

As I sat down at my desk to start working, Aidan peeked his head around the corner of the office doorway.

“Ready to take a break?”

“Aidan, you can’t be serious. I just got here. You can explore around town if you’re bored waiting on me.”

“I wouldn’t think about leaving you. Besides, I’d rather explore something else,” he smiled mischievously.

He walked towards me, his eyes serious and hungry. Just the sight of him made me tingle. I’d never been so offended by a man, and so turned on at the same time. He thought he could control me with his captivating smile…and he was probably right.

I spun around in my office chair, and shot him a teasing, playful look. The heavy wood door to my office had a lock, and offered us complete privacy. Aidan could have me right here without anyone knowing.

He pressed his hands lightly between my thighs. I quivered at his touch. Heat pulsed deep inside me; I was already wet and ready for him. But this wasn’t the right time or place for it.

“Aidan, I should work. My boss might knock.”

“Your boss isn’t even here. Besides, I need you again.”  He pressed his lips to my mouth and kissed me deeply. My soul came alive; the union of our mouths, full of lust and passion, made my heart race. He massaged the base of my neck and whispered seductively.

“You’re so fucking sexy. I can’t help myself.”

His perfect abs, muscular and without an ounce of extra flesh, glistened under his flannel button up shirt. As I yanked at the fabric, one of the buttons snapped and fell onto the floor with a ping.

“I never liked that shirt anyway,” he teased as he ripped it off the rest of the way. “You need to be naked.”

I obliged, and scooted quickly out of my work clothes. I unclasped my bra and freed my heavy, ample breasts. My lace thong slipped down my thigh and onto the floor. Within moments, we stood across from one another, completely nude.

“My God, you’re gorgeous.”  He licked his lips, and surveyed my naked form. I was so glad I’d recently groomed myself. I was cleanly shaven, with only a scant landing strip to guide his way. He started towards me with a look of primal hunger in his eyes, and our bodies collided explosively. I fell against the desk, barely catching myself before he was on top of me; his strong arms arched over my delicate chest.

As we slid across the desk top, papers flew onto the floor in a heap. Chills coursed through my body with each touch of his fingers. I nipped at his neck. His manly scent intoxicated my senses, and fueled my primal desire for him ever further.

“You’re so sexy, Olivia.”  He tugged at my nipple with his bare teeth. His mouth grinned as he plumped the firm flesh in his hands, enjoying their fullness. I moaned softly at every flick of his tongue; his soft sucking sent heat waves through my body. His skin was deliciously slick with sweat. I rolled my hands down his slippery muscles and stroked his bare ass, so firm and juicy I wanted to bite it.

I parted my legs for him, and beckoned him closer.

“You drive me wild.”  He growled sensually in my ear, and it left me yearning for more.

I ran my hands through his thick, coarse hair. My fingers explored his tight muscles as they melded into mine, our bodies dancing as one for a brief moment. I couldn’t help myself; my hand rocketed down to his hard cock. I squeezed it firmly in my clenched fist.

Aidan slapped my hand gently. “Bad girl.”  He slid his tongue down my abdomen, and halted at my navel. Then, he gazed up at me with a wicked grin that spread quickly across his gorgeous face. An intense shiver electrified my body when his lips slipped delicately between my folds. He buried his face in my sex; his shoulders moved in a rhythmic pace as his tongue flitted inside me.

I pulled his head up, my cheeks hot from embarrassment. He swatted my hand away, and greedily sucked at my folds.

“You taste so fucking good, Olivia,” he moaned as waves of pleasure coursed through my limbs. I licked my lips, searching for the words to answer him. But I was so turned on, I couldn’t speak.

My hips grinded against his mouth, taking guilty pleasure at each lick of his gifted tongue. He pushed into me harder; I braced myself against the sides of the desk, certain I’d explode with ecstasy if he kept at it.

“Aidan, I’m going to come.” I whimpered, my eyes fluttering as he sucked my tender clit, so sensitive and swollen.

“Yes, baby. Let it go.”  He licked hard and then gently sucked as my body writhed beneath him. The orgasm lifted my hips off the desk; my core stiffened and my extremities went numb. His tongue pleasurably pulsed my trembling canal. I pushed into him, willing his lips deeper into my core. I moaned loudly, uncaring that my boss might come into the office at any moment. All I cared about was my intense, primal desire to come. My cheeks flushed as tears streamed down my face, stinging my eyes as I squealed in delight. The pleasure of my orgasm released so explosively, it bordered on pain. I clung to it as it rolled through my body again and shot like a rocket through my fingers and toes.

“Too much,” I panted.

The feeling was too intense, too raw. If he didn’t stop, I might lose my mind. He smiled wickedly and kept at it, circling my swollen clit with his tongue. He sucked harder as the waves built inside me once more. I thrashed wildly, my inner animal uncaged. He thrusted his fingers inside me, and I lost it. I let go of all control and rocketed to the stratosphere as I came violently around his outstretched hand.

“That’s better.”  He kissed my thighs, his face still wet with my slickness. “I love watching you come. You’re so wild,” he growled.

I stretched like a sleepy feline across the desk, ready for a nice long nap. My eyes closed for a moment until I felt his hard cock pulse against my inner thigh, reigniting my hunger for more.

I turned over, and exposed my backside to him. He ran his cock through my bare ass cheeks, sliding down to rest at the circle of my exposed sex. He yanked me towards him to the edge of the desk; my buttocks delicately perched in front of his muscular quads. The cool desktop underneath my breasts reawakened my sensitive nerve endings. I trembled, ready and primed for him to enter me from behind, aching for him to bury himself inside me.

His forearms held my hips steady as he mounted me; his muscles strained as he teased his cock, seductively encircling my wet and needy sex. I leaned back towards him, opening myself for his stone hard rod. I prepared for the inevitable pain as my tender sex pulsed towards him, eager to give him the pleasure he’d given me.

“Oh God.” He moaned as he sank into me. His fierce drive rammed my sweet spot as I held on to the edge of the desk. He was enormous, and stretched me to the limit of my comfort. He pushed so deeply, I felt my insides might split by the sheer force of his powerful manhood. I threw my hair back. The strands swung wildly as he held onto my mane, calling my name in pleasure.

“Olivia.”  He slapped my ass; my tingling skin stung with a distinct mix of pain mixed with pleasure. I fucked him back harder, giving him the joy he craved as my canal pulsed and constricted his thick shaft.

Never had I felt so turned on, completely unaware of my surroundings and overcome with passion. I clenched around him, savoring every deep thrust of his cock as he slammed against me. His body hardened; his fingers tensed as they fisted my thighs roughly. His abs rippled as they stiffened, preparing for the explosion that roared towards us. He slammed into me one final time; a sensual, primal cry escaped from his lips.

“Thank you, Lord,” he moaned as long spurts of his cum rocketed out of his gigantic cock.

His fingers seized around me, taking hold of my hips as he kept thrusting. Waves of euphoria spilled from my body, my skin so satisfied by his release. He caressed my soft hair as he glistened with masculine perspiration.

“You’re incredible,” he gasped.

He collapsed on top of me and turned me to face him. Our bodies again became one as he rolled me onto my side and pressed his cheek against my forehead. I kissed his nose softly, and relaxed in his arms. He smiled, a broad grin of complete satisfaction, as we closed our eyes and breathed in unison.

Just then, I heard a knock on the door. Oh Crap. It had to be Percy, my boss. I stalled for time.

“Just a minute, Mr. Lane. I mean, Mr. Lane, Esquire. I’m just finishing up something…” My face flushed red with embarrassment. I was a terrible liar, and my voice betrayed me every time.

“Tell him to go away,” Aidan mouthed.

“I can’t do that,” I whispered. “I’ll be just a minute, Mr. Percy. I mean, Mr. Lane, Esquire.” I tossed Aidan his clothes as I slid my outfit over my boneless body. Aidan’s thick cock had started to harden again, and he showed it to me as he slid his boxers up his quads.

“Don’t tease me,” I smirked. Aidan responded by slapping me across the ass when I bent down to put on my shoes. The smack was audible and I wondered if Percy could hear us from the other side of the office door.

“Shhh…” I swatted Aidan’s hand away.

“Everything okay in there, Olivia?” Mr. Lane’s voice grew more impatient by the second.

“Yes, everything’s fine. I thought you were in Hawaii?” I said as I smoothed my wool skirt down over my wet thighs. I shook my hair out and wiped underneath my eyes to make sure my eyeliner wasn’t smudged. Aidan took a few steps back and leaned against the desk, trying to look casual. Finally, I opened the door.

“Storm blowing in from south of here. Couldn’t get out. You’re sure everything’s okay?” He eyed Aidan up and down, as a hint of suspicion crossed his face. “Friend of yours?”

“Yes,” I nodded. “Mr. Lane, this is Aidan. He’s my…”

“Nice to meet you,” Aidan extended his hand.

“You can call me Percy. Can’t say I’ve seen you around here. You here about a new case, or…?”

Before Aidan had the chance to say anything, I interjected. “Aidan knows Chase Reynolds. You know, the shifter client we’re defending for murder. He’s helping me secure Chase’s alibi.”

“Oh, in that case, don’t let me keep you,” Percy said as he backed out through the doorway and into the main lobby. After he’d left, I closed the door and my hands flew to my heated cheeks.

“Damn, that was close,” I blushed. “Do you think he knew?”

“What? That I was a shifter or that we’d just had mind-blowing sex?”

“Both,” I nodded.

“Yeah, he definitely knew,” Aidan laughed.
