Chapter 7
“You don’t have to do this, you know,” I said a week later as we waited in the small hospital room.
Cameron stopped pacing and flashed me an incredulous look. “I know.”
“I’m sure you have something better to do.”
He frowned and resumed his pacing. “There’s nothing more important to me than finding out the results of your tests.”
I shook my head and smiled, knowing that arguing was useless. When Cameron got an idea in his head, there was no shaking it. The man was hopelessly stubborn.
It had been two weeks since he night he had shown up at my door, and Cameron has been a constant at my side. I’m not sure what I’d do without his quiet strength.
True to his word, Cameron had taken care of everything when it came to my health. At his insistence, I moved out of my apartment and into his, where he felt he could better take care of me. He dissolved his relationship with Williams and Chase Advertising, saying that he was putting the launch of his new clothing line on hold. He conducted all other business by teleconference from his living room, and pampered me with luxurious takeout meals from some of the best chefs in the city.
He came with me to all of my doctor’s visits, and hovered over me like a mother hen. He hand-chose my doctors and paid for all of my care. There wasn’t a single thing that had gone missed. In my darkest nights, Cameron was there, holding me, telling me everything would be okay. I believed him. There was something about his presence, something about his determination and quiet strength, that made me believe that no matter what the diagnosis, we would overcome the new obstacle together.
In short, the past week felt like a wonderful dream, and part of me didn’t want the situation to end. But end it must, for today was the day we were to find out the results of all the testing I had gone through over the past several days.
“Doctor, finally,” Cameron said as an older man entered the room. “Do you have any news?”
I grasped Cameron’s fingers. His large hand engulfed my small one and I took comfort in the reassurance his presence provided.
“Yes, I do have news, in fact.”
Cameron dropped my hand and slid his arm around my shoulders. “How bad is it?”
“Bad? It’s not bad at all.” The doctor smiled warmly at me. “I’m happy to report that the results of your test came back.”
“And?” Cameron asked.
The doctor glanced and him and returned his focus on me. “And…they came back negative.”
I stared at him in shock. “You mean to tell me that I don’t have cancer?”
“No, absolutely not.” The doctor grinned. “Everything came back negative.”
I was too stunned to speak. We had mentally prepared ourselves for the worst. Cameron had even started calling some of the best specialists in the country, ready to fly them in if the diagnosis looked bleak. Now the diagnosis had come back and the news was better than either one of us had dared to hope.
Cameron turned me to face him. “You’re fine.” He let out a half chuckle as his eyes shone bright with unshed tears. “You’re fine!”
I grinned and hugged him tight as tears streamed down my face. It was over. This horrible, exhausting nightmare was finally over.
The doctor graciously allowed us a moment to absorb the news. When we finally stopped hugging, the doctor handed me a tissue to wipe away my tears.
“Thank you, doctor,” I said. “I can’t tell you ow much this means to me.”
“If the spot on her lung isn’t cancer, what is it?”
The doctor shrugged. “It looks like it could be some scarring, perhaps from an old bout of pneumonia or other respiratory ailment. The scarring looks as if it had been there for a while.”
“Oh, thank goodness,” I said, turning to Cam. “
Cameron stood and shook the doctor’s hand. “Thank you. We appreciate all of the hard work you have done.”
“No problem, son. No problem at all. I’m just glad that this story had a happy ending.”
It didn’t take us long to gather our things and make our way to Cameron’s Bentley.
“We aren’t going home,” I observed as we turned in the opposite direction from his apartment.
“No, we’re not.”
I glanced over at Cam, but his gaze was fixed on the road. “Where are we going?”
“We just got some of the best news of our lives. I’m in the mood to celebrate.”
I straightened in my seat and gave him a nervous glance. “Cameron, where are you taking me?”
He flashed me a grin and refocused on the road. “Somewhere special You’ll see.”
