Careful What You Wish For (Corporate Chaos Series Book 4) by Leighann Dobbs, Lisa Fenwick (10)

Harper hurried down the dimly lit hallway with the giant bag of takeout food. She'd tried to be as quiet as possible when she'd run up to the reception area to open the door for the delivery guy, and she hadn’t seen anyone else in the building. Maybe, whoever it was had decided they wouldn’t try to mess with the setup again, but it was better she and Logan stay, just to be sure.

“That smells awesome,” Logan said as soon as Harper approached him with the food. He'd ordered so much of it she was sure the entire building smelled like it now. If the perp was here and hungry then they would definitely make an appearance after smelling this!

She shut the door behind her and walked over to where Logan had set up two chairs with a cart in between to use as a makeshift table. For a minute, she thought about asking if they should maybe shut the lights off and use a candle instead, but that seemed overly dramatic and possibly suggested something romantic, and she didn’t want to make a fool out of herself. Besides, the main door was shut and there were no windows. If someone was going to come in here, they probably wouldn’t see the lights on from outside the room anyway.

She sat and helped him pull the various boxes of Chinese food out of the bag, grateful they'd thrown in some paper plates and plastic utensils as well. She handed him one of the bottles of water then arranged all the boxes in the middle of the cart, so they could each grab food from them easily.

“Well, I think you ordered enough food for about ten people. I guess you were as hungry as I am, or you just really like Chinese food,” she joked, as they both eagerly dug into the food.

“So, I have a confession to make,” Logan said, in between bites of pork fried rice. “Gertie hired me to find out whoever is messing things up. I’m not really an IT person by trade, I’m a Private Investigator.”

Harper dabbed at her mouth with a napkin and nodded her head. It made total sense to her, and it also explained why he didn’t seem to be a whiz with computers.

“Well, that doesn’t exactly surprise me. Things came down to the wire at the last event, and if it hadn’t been for Tanner having a change of heart, Gertie’s first event could have been her last. Hiring someone to get to the bottom of things was a smart thing for her to do.”

Logan stopped chewing, looking questioningly at Harper.

Harper finished chewing her food, knowing she needed to explain her last statement.

“Well, you probably know Tanner is my Uncle, if you’ve investigated me, which I’m sure you have.” Harper said this hoping to get a reaction from Logan, she was sure he already knew everything there was to know about her, but his reaction didn’t give him away if he did. “So, there is a bit of history with him and Marly, the girl who had her wedding here. He thinks she ruined his fashion business, and he wanted to try to screw her wedding up.”

Harper sighed heavily, unsure how Logan would react to what she was about to say next.

“So, I got the job here basically to help my Uncle mess up Gertie’s first event. Not to get back at her for anything, she was just collateral damage. He had an issue with the bride, Marly. Anyway, as time went on we both agreed what we were doing wasn’t right and Uncle Tanner fixed it all. The wedding reception went off without a hitch and was a huge hit. I still feel guilty for what I did, Gertie has been nothing but great to me. So, that’s why I want to catch whoever it is that’s screwing with things. I want to make sure no one messes things up for Gertie. She’s a good person and doesn’t deserve to have her business ruined. Plus, my Uncle adores her, and he would be heartbroken if she was hurt in any way, and I can’t even think about seeing him like that again.”

Harper waited for Logan to say something, but he didn’t. Was he shocked? He reached for a sparerib, maybe he was just hungry and hadn’t even heard what she'd said.

“Oh, and I also put a GoPro in the room with the runway lighting. I saw you on it. You messed around with the wires.”

Logan looked up from his plate and wiped his mouth with a napkin.

“Guilty. You got me. But, I wasn’t messing around with the wires. I was checking them, and they'd been screwed around with. As in cut.”

“What? Someone cut all the wires for the lights for the show? Why are you only telling me this now?” Harper was irritated Logan hadn’t mentioned this before, and now knew she would have to scramble to replace all the lights.

“I didn’t say anything because I didn’t want everyone to panic. I didn’t know who did it and didn’t want everyone here slowing down on getting ready for the show. It’s too important. So, I had a buddy of mine replace the lights, and I still don’t know who did it.”

Harper couldn’t really argue with him over that. He was right, if everyone knew about the lights being sabotaged they would focus more on trying to figure out who had cut them versus get ready for the show. Plus, he'd already taken care of getting them fixed.

“I guess that all makes sense. It seems to me maybe one of the maintenance guys could be the suspect. They are down here all the time and putting this stuff together.”

“Funny you say that. I did see Ben skulking around outside. He didn’t really belong there,” Logan said.

“I saw Ben, Noah, and George with a computer. You know, the ones on the carts they use for inventory. Can’t they access the files from there, the ones on the main server? If so, then in theory it would be easy to change things without arousing suspicion.”

“That computer has the same access as the others, if the person has the right login and password, and if they know some system commands, they could change the rights, and access the files from the command line,” Logan explained.

“In English please,” Harper said.

“They could access the blueprint and invitation files from there.” Logan laughed.

“Well, it looks like we’re in for a long night then. Considering the suspects, I think we need to make a list of things we need to triple-check for the event and cross them off, one by one, tonight.”

Big T walked into the room where the runway was being assembled and saw George and one of the other maintenance guys, Hank, working on it, tearing it down. He wanted to scream but kept his composure, he'd worked hard to make sure the runway had been perfect, and it had been when he'd left the night before. Now they were screwing around with it and he didn’t like how it looked.

“Hey, can you help us out T? We need to move this around. It was set up wrong and everyone is flipping out about it,” George asked him as he struggled with one of the giant pieces of wood.

Big T nodded his head yes and started to help them, his face turning bright red from anger. First, he'd gotten the test results that were not what he'd expected, and now this. His plan had been ruined! He knew exactly who had done it, too. Harper. She'd been snooping around down here way too much lately.

He'd caught her on more than one of the nanny cams he'd set up around the mill, including in her office. He'd watched as she hid a GoPro in the room where all the lights were. The same room he'd already hacked apart wires in the day before. Ha! Too late!

But then she'd hooked up that GoPro and watched a bunch of footage from it in her office. He couldn’t see her monitor, but he could see her face and tell she'd seen something that might be incriminating. Maybe she'd seen him doing something else. He didn’t know if she had any other GoPros around, he couldn’t hide his nanny cams everywhere without them being seen. She'd also been asking all those dumb questions about the computers the other day. Why did she even care?

He knew she was trying to trap him, but the joke would be on her. He was way too smart for her. He would take care of her, and Gertie, in one fell swoop. It would happen so fast, neither one of them would know what happened.
