Casual: Part 3 (Power Play Series Book 11) by Kelly Harper (2)

Chapter 2

The entire world stands still when our eyes connect. It feels like everything inside of me is too jumbled to do whatever it’s supposed to be doing. I want to run away and hide, but I also want to yell and scream and tell him how much he hurt me.

Logan’s face widens into a huge smile as he practically leaps towards me.

“You couldn’t sleep either?” he says. He wraps his strong arms around my tiny waist and pulls me in for an embrace. “I couldn’t stop thinking about holding you in my arms again…”

As he leans forward to kiss me the rage inside of me comes boiling up.

No!” I shout. I jerk my arms from side to side, twisting away from him. “Don’t touch me!”

Logan lets go, his eyes going wide with surprise and shock. He looks me up and down, unsure of what to make of my reaction.

“Aimee, what is it? Did I do something wrong?”

Emotions rise into my face and I struggle against the lump in my throat.

“I can’t believe you!” I say. “How can you lie straight to my face like that? I thought you were different.”

Logan’s brow furrows and his back stiffens before he responds.

“What the hell are you talking about?”

“You want to see what I’m talking about?” I march to the television and hold my finger in front of the Play button. “I’m talking about the lovely little turn-down service Mara—excuse me, your fiancée—left for me while you were cheating on her…”

I press the button.

Logan’s confused eyes flit to the screen. His face blanches when he realizes what he’s watching.

“I can explain…”

I shake my head.

“I don’t want to hear any more of your lies. I just want to go back home and put this whole weekend behind me. At least at home I can tell when a guy is completely full of shit.”

“I’m not full of shit. This isn’t what it seems!”

“No? You told me you never bring other women out here! And here you are fucking one of them!”

Logan breathes out a sharp breath, attempting to calm himself.

“She’s not some fling,” he says, pointing at the television. “Her name is Gwyneth. The relationship didn’t last very long.” There’s fire behind his eyes as he gives me a hard look. “So, you’re right, I didn’t tell you about her and maybe I should have. But she’s not a part of my life anymore and I didn’t see the point in even bringing it up.”

Gwyneth? A relationship? Is the explanation really that simple? No. If it were that simple Mara wouldn’t make a big deal of it.

“That’s not the only thing your fiancée left me.” I retrieve the crumbled paper from where I’d thrown it. “She also wrote me this nice little note, telling me to get the hell out of here… Which is what I’m doing.”

Logan grabs the note and reads it. The muscles in his jaw tighten as he scans the tiny page a second time. When he’s done his brow furrows and he looks at the ground, shaking his head.

“What the hell is she up to?” he says, mostly to himself. Then his annoyingly beautiful eyes return to me. “What do you want me to say? None of this is true. I don’t know why Mara did this.”

Unbelievable.

“Do you really think I’m going to fall for more of your crap?” I shake my head. “I’m done. If I never hear the name Logan Atwood again it will be too soon.” I give him a hard stare for a few moments before letting out a nervous laugh. “You know, if you’d been straight with me from the beginning I would have agreed to a little weekend fling with you, even if you are engaged. But if there’s one thing I can’t tolerate it’s liars.”
It’s not really true. The thought of sleeping with someone else’s man disgusts me. But Logan doesn’t know that, and I want to make sure he knows just how much he hurt me.

In a blur, Logan steps in and presses his lips into mine. Emotions threaten to overcome me as my head and my heart try to pull me in different directions. Finally, my head wins out and I give him a sharp shove.

“Fuck you, Logan,” I yell, staggering away from him. “God, why do men think they can just kiss you to make everything okay?”

Logan gives me a defiant, fierce look.

“I kissed you because I wanted you to feel it just like I do,” he says, his voice firm and resolved. “You can’t tell me you don’t feel that connection between us. I don’t know about you but that connection means something to me.”

“Of course I feel it!” I shout back. My eyes tingle as tears glaze over them. “But you’re engaged. That means someone else feels this way about you, and she thinks you feel the same about her! I can’t do that to someone!”

Logan’s eyes dart back and forth between mine. He has the look of someone who’s figuring things out at a million miles a second. He’s probably wondering how he’s going to weasel himself out of this one…

Finally, he holds the note up.

None of this is true. And I will prove it to you.”

I shake my head. I want to tell him to just drop it already. There’s no point in keeping up the lies. But something inside me won’t let me take that final step.

“How?”

“Come with me. Mara’s gone too far and I want you to be there when I tell her so. You’ll see I’ve been telling you the truth this whole time…”
