Daring Summer (Colombian Cartel Book 5) by Suzanne Steele (15)

“Blue, I know I should feel bad that he’s dead but I don’t. I’m glad he’s gone. I wish I could thank whoever did it.” Amber had no way of knowing that she was doing just that. She was sitting next to Blue on the loveseat in Blue’s bedroom. Blue had just shown her the online article detailing Huggy Bear’s demise.

To look at Blue’s concerned face, you would never know that she was the coldblooded killer who had taken Huggy out. She figured she had done Louisville a favor by offing the pimp, so there was nothing to feel guilty about.

“No, you shouldn’t feel guilty,” Blue assured Amber. “You should feel free for the first time in years. You don’t have to worry or look over your shoulder anymore. No woman should have to live in fear. You don’t need to be afraid of a damn thing as long as you’re with me, Amber.”

“I know that,” she said sweetly, her voice warm with gratitude. “But I wonder what happened to the women who worked for him? I bet the other pimps are hovering like vultures, claiming them one by one. Some of the other pimps made Huggy Bear look like a saint. I’m sure the girls are terrified of what will happen to them now.”

Blue raised her eyebrows and scrunched her lips as she thought about the potential business opportunities she may have inadvertently created for herself. “Do any of the girls look as good as you?”

Amber blushed, flattered that a raven-haired beauty like Blue would consider her to be beautiful. “Yeah. He did have a way of attracting beautiful women. Why? What are you thinking?” Her response wasn’t born of vanity but rather a vague, unnamed discomfort at the thought of Blue admiring someone else in the same way.

Amber had always wondered how a guy like Huggy could be so alluring to the opposite sex. Maybe it was the flattering lies that rolled off his tongue with such ease, like silk sinuously wrapping its way around a woman’s ego before he sent her out to make bank for him.

Amber was learning from Blue that confidence was something that came from within. No man could make a woman believe in herself. Her dreams were her own and only she could bring them to fruition. Whether she failed or succeeded was up to her. It was time for her to grow up and grab the brass ring.

Blue’s voice was deceptively soft. “They could come and work for me. I’d take thirty percent of what they make, screen their dates, and keep them safe. They’ll make more money with me than they ever would with anyone else.” Blue had been tossing around the idea of being able to stop hooking and just be a madam. She was still in her prime but, yeah, she was getting older. It would be better to semi-retire while time was on her side.

She had no doubt that she would be able to protect the women who worked for her. She had established a good clientele as an escort over the years and had built her business off of referrals from her regulars.

Not only was Blue talented and inventive when it came to fucking, but she was discreet. She serviced powerful, rich men who needed the discretion she provided. Judges, doctors, lawyers, and powerful politicians didn’t want their indiscretions revealed for the community to judge, and they certainly didn’t want to attract the attention of law enforcement. The men got off and she got their money. It was a win-win for everyone.

“I think some of the women would be willing to work for you. More than once I’ve heard them talk about wanting to be off the streets. Huggy Bear wasn’t the only dangerous man they encountered. Some of the customers around here are freaks, pure and simple – especially the one from out of town who are just here for a business conference or whatever. Even Huggy wouldn’t cater to some of the creepy shit they wanted. I’m just lucky that you want to look after the women who work for you. There are freaks out there with violent fetishes who will pay a lot of money for an anonymous good time. A pimp with no scruples at all could really make bank by focusing on customers like that. There are a few girls desperate enough to do it, too – especially the addicts. There’s this one girl, she started out so pretty but over time she’s become almost unrecognizable. Drugs, you know. Meth, I think. I was never sure. Anyway, I saw her letting a john and his friends run a train on her in an alley. They were at it for hours, and she got busy setting up her next fix of meth like they weren’t even there. Saddest thing I’ve ever seen. It’s scary out there, Blue.”

“You’ll never have to worry about that again.” Blue began to think out loud about how to build her new business. “The women would have to be interviewed. They would need to get physicals and most would definitely need makeovers. To please the caliber of men I deal with, my girls need to look like sexy businesswomen or trophy wives, but be uninhibited sluts when it comes to sex. Above all, they have to be discreet. You know, they need to be able to keep their mouths shut – unless their customer’s putting something in it.” Her eyes gleamed with an inner fire when she looked over at Amber and said, “Let’s do this. Tell me which girls you trust and would feel comfortable recommending. For each one that stays for six months and performs well, I’ll give you a $5,000 bonus. Don’t base your recommendations on the money, though. If we get busted nobody wins, so only recommend girls you can really trust.”

Amber felt flattered that Blue valued her opinion. It was the first time anyone had given her credit for having any degree of intellect. She wasn’t going to betray that trust. The money would help her start over. She would have a decent place to live and some independence; you couldn’t put a price on that.

Blue gave Amber a notebook and a pen so she could get started jotting down the pros and cons of each girl in Huggy’s stable. She felt hopeful about the future and it was all because of Blue.
