GLOSSARY FOR LEGENDS OF THE STORM
Álfar - Elves. Comprised of the svartálfar (black elves some commonly think are more dwarfish in nature, who work metals), Dökkálfar (dark elves that live within a hidden world within the earth) and the Ljósálfar (light elves who are fairer than the sun to look at, and live in Álfheimr). Some Icelanders say that to speak the word 'Álfar' is to draw their attention, and so it's safer to call them Huldufólk, which technically, they are not.
Álfheimr - Land of the Light Elves.
Cycle - Sixty years or so. Dreki consider time in cycles. A dreki is not considered an adult until they are two cycles old, and they often live for twenty-five cycles.
Chaos-Bubble - a small side-world made purely of Chaos magic. Held within each volcano, this is the heart of the dreki court and guarded by magic. No human can enter a dreki court, unless they have a certain amount of magic within them, or have been rewarded with a dreki talisman, which grants them passage.
Clan - A group of dreki who share familial ties, and live together. The term is commonly used throughout Europe and the North Americas. Each clan rules a certain territory, the edges of which are formed by treaty with other clans.
Court - The official term for a clan or tribe of dreki. Also a place each clan refers to as home. Generally within a volcano.
Dreki - Dreki were created when the Great Goddess tore her soul to pieces, and imbued each piece into flesh within the Fire of the volcano, Hekla. Dreki therefore, are creatures created of Fire, Earth and Air, who also have an affinity for Tiamat's Chaos magic. Commonly mistaken for their lesser brethren—dragons—they have the ability to change forms if they desire. Dreki prefer to live within volcanoes, where they can be close to the elements of Earth and Fire. There are many dreki clans in the world. Many clans rule the West Coast of Canada, and the Americas. Another hotspot is along the East coast of Russia, and the string of islands that leads down through Asia. There are also a few scattered courts along the Mediterranean and throughout the East Coast of Africa.
Dragons - lesser children created by Tiamat, but borne from her flesh, not her soul. Monsters that hunger for dreki power, and emulate them by finding volcanoes to settle within. Lack the magic of the elements. It is considered an insult by the dreki to be called a dragon.
Great Goddess - Tiamat, Goddess of Chaos and Creation.
Huldufólk - "Hidden Folk". Those creatures from Scandinavian folklore.
Mate - To choose the one who will bear your children, and whom you will live out the end of your days with.
Plague of dreki - human term for a collective group of dreki. Insulting term to the dreki.
Sarratum Zamani - "Queen of Lightning"
Serpents - Created at the same time as dragons, sea serpents were hunted to extinction by ancient sailors.
Tiamat - Ancient Sumerian goddess who was killed by the Storm-God, Marduk, when she was in serpent form. The North Wind took her soul North, where it hibernated within the volcano, Hekla, for many eons, drawing power from the Earth and the Fire within. When Hekla exploded, she used the eruption to tear her soul to pieces, giving birth to the first of the dreki race, in one last act of Creation.
Tribe - African dreki term for 'clan'.
Trolls - creatures of myth in Iceland. Rarely seen, they have an affinity for the element of Earth.
Twin Flame - a dreki concept for the other half of one's soul. A soul-mate. Dreki consider their souls lacking, as they were created from pieces of Tiamat's soul, therefore to find the other half of their soul completes them. A rare occurrence, which goes beyond mating.
Wyrms - another name for dragons.
Zini Clan - Spirit of the Wind Clan, rules Iceland.
Zilittu Clan - Spirit of the Mist Clan, rules the north of Norway.
