Mr. Buff: A Flaming Romance by Milly Taiden (27)

27

On their drive home, Alex gripped the steering wheel of her car, her fingers aching. She had paced the front of the police department lobby for so long, her feet hurt. And she was wearing comfortable shoes she packed for hiking at the cabin.

“Why do they suspect you?” she asked Andrew in the passenger seat next to her. “Just because you were at the park? So was Nina and I. Why didn’t they bring us in?”

“Alexandra,” he said, “don’t even think that. I would’ve torn that place apart if they’d hauled you in for anything.” She didn’t doubt that. He was persistent when he set his mind to something.

“What other evidence do they have?” she asked. Then she remembered the detective looking at the front of Andrew’s SUV when they were at the café. “Oh shit. Your truck, Andrew, it’s wrecked.”

“I hit an animal, not a car,” he replied.

“Yeah, but how do they know that?” she said, trying to get into the detective’s head. If she could figure out his line of reasoning, maybe should come up with a strategy of defense. “If Jen was driving as fast as you said, it wouldn’t take much of a bump to knock her off the road.”

“Who’s to say she was even bumped? Hudson could’ve been lying to make me say something.”

“We should drive to the impound and look at your truck again.” She liked that idea. Maybe there was blood or fur on the bumper. But the animal wasn’t hurt. Maybe not.

“I’m under house arrest, sweetheart. I’m stuck at home...” he placed his hand on her knee, “all by myself with no interruptions.” Thinking about them under the sheets again warmed her body.

“You owe me for bailing you out,” she gave him a sly grin, “I’ll take the payment in kind.”

His hand slid up her leg and cupped her pussy. “Damn right you will. Until you pass out from coming so hard.”

After two hours, Alex escaped from the bedroom to find food while Andrew slept. She’d let him sleep. He deserved it for his efforts in bed. Damn, sex had never been so good.

From her purse, she pulled her phone and dialed Nina. Her cousin had no idea of the shit that had rained on them since reaching the city.

“Jen’s dead?” Nina yelled on the phone. “What happened? How did she die? Oh my god, I can’t believe it. We just saw her.”

“I know,” Alex said. “That’s the reason they suspect Andrew. He was in the park, too.”

“But so were we,” Nina replied. Alex had the same response on the way home to Andrew’s. “There has to be more the police aren’t telling.”

“I wouldn’t know what.” Except for the vehicle damage, there was nothing else. How much was enough to make an arrest? Apparently, that was enough.

Nina said, “I’m calling Jen’s husband to see when the funeral is. I’ll call you back in a minute.” Before Alex could reply, Nina had hung up. This was all shocking to say the least. Just another problem stacked atop a mountain of others from that night. Last night.

She heard a foot fall behind her. Strong arms encircled her waist. “How did you get out of bed? Next time, I’ll have to tie you up tighter.” She giggled at his playfulness. When his lips slid down her neck, her laugh transformed into a moan. Chills raced down her arms. The man knew how to activate her body.

“How about some food first?” she said.

He lifted her and set her on the counter. “Got all I need to eat right here.” His hands pulled at her shirt.

“Andrew,” she slapped at his hands, laughing, “that’s not what I meant.”

He held her hands behind her back with one of his and the other hand had the freedom to roam as he desired. His first stop was her breast where he had spent generous amounts of time the last couple hours. She was ready to spread for him there on the counter until her phone rang.

Andrew kept her from getting it, taking more breast into his mouth and sucking hard. God she was going to come just from his hot mouth on her. Then his phone rang. Groaning, he ignored it.

“Andrew, you have to see who it is, at least. What if it’s your lawyer needing to talk with you?”

He dropped his head, mouth leaving her nipple. What she wouldn’t do to have it back.

“Yeah, okay.” Andrew schlepped to his phone on the table and she picked up hers to see a message was left. She pushed in the code for voicemail and heard Nina’s voice tell her the service for Jen was at ten a.m. tomorrow morning.

She thought that was really fast and somewhat early on a weekday, but it wasn’t any of her business. Nina also said the office was closed for several days. At least she didn’t have to worry about that mess. With Sholes gone, she was safe.

With Andrew still on the phone, she quickly made sandwiches with turkey and cheese and found a bag of pretzels for a side.

Setting up the food and drinks in the den, Alex turned on the TV then sank onto the sofa. Soon after, Andrew sat next to her, grabbing up a sandwich and handful of pretzels.

“Who was that?” she asked.

“My lawyer,” Andrew said, taking a bite of food.

“What did he have to say?”

“He wants me to come to his office in the morning to go over everything that happened so he can prep for the arraignment in the afternoon.”

“I can’t believe the police would even think you would run your own secretary off the road. Why would you possibly do that? There is no motive.”

“Guess the law doesn’t need motive this early on,” he replied.

“That’s so stupid,” she answered, disgusted with the whole matter. “What if Nina and I testify that you were with us all night? Even the forest rangers who took our statements and Shores’s body saw you there.”

“Except I was gone for a bit.”

“To make an emergency phone call,” she answered. “That only took minutes.” He shrugged, mouth full of bread and turkey.

He held his hand out. “Before I forget, let me see your phone,” he said. She pulled it from her back pocket and handed it over. She watched as he downloaded an app she’d never heard of.

“What’s that for?” she asked.

“This program will let me see where you are at any moment. And I’m programming my phone in to yours so you can see where I am.”

“You want to spy on me?” she said playfully.

His smile melted her underwear. “As you’re spying on me.” He leaned closer and kissed her, hot and heavy. She was ready to say to hell with the food and climb back into bed.
