In short, all the action seemed to be happening off shift, and until we got a bite from the Stolavii near Earth, who knows how long we’d be stuck waiting.  There was nothing really to do, except more simulations. 

I did a little research on the five empire planets as well, to learn more about them.  All of them could support human life, although one was marginal.  It was recommended to wear a filter mask on Raitov, if we ever visited the bug world for any reason.  There were a few trace toxins in the atmosphere that would become deadly with prolonged exposure.

They all had similar mass and gravity, and were mostly earthlike.  There were some variations of course.

I also discovered there were quite a lot more worlds with life in the three hundred light year wide globe of six thousand stars.  Fifteen other planets.  None had species out in space however, or even close to Earth with satellites.  The other issue with those fifteen worlds were that none of the races in the empire could survive the surface.

Several of them had too dense an atmosphere, or too much oxygen, or too much carbon dioxide, or some other atmospheric toxin.  Even if they didn’t have their own intelligent species on them, which twelve of the fifteen did, we could never create a colony on those planets.

Seems life in the galaxy was more common than I was led to believe at first, just most of it was incompatible.  That wouldn’t stop the empire from creating relationships if they ever achieved interstellar abilities, we could trade and talk to them, we just couldn’t breathe the same air.   Some of the planets even had Isyth satellites, and they were kind of the Isyth version of reality television.

Despite my research, I spent most of my time on battle simulations, and managed to finish up three of them before the end of shift.  After another sonic shower, I headed over to the captain’s quarters for dinner.

“Good evening Vik.”

“Lori, come on in and sit.  Everything going okay?  We haven’t really had much time to talk outside of bridge business for the last four days.”

I smirked, “I had an interesting conversation with Rilok.”

Vik sighed, “What did the idiot say?”

I shrugged, “Bullshit, mostly.  But it did get me curious.  Why did you hire me, instead of recruiting a top weapon’s officer from the fleet?  I’m grateful you didn’t, but confused.”

He said, “First tell me what he said.”

I blushed, “He said you hired me, so that you could get your dick wet.”

He nodded, “Yes, he’s accused me of the same.  I’d be lying if I said you weren’t exotically beautiful, and that the mere sight of you doesn’t stir my lust.”

I tilted my head, “So… that had something to do with it?”

He shook his head, “Not really.  It was your confidence, fearlessness, quick decisive thinking, and prowess in battle that made you a perfect choice.  You’re already qualified to guard me on missions, and learning the combat systems on the ship isn’t that difficult, not for someone as intelligent as you are.  Yes, all that’s true, but it wasn’t my main reason.  I could have found someone in the fleet almost as competent as you are in battle, and already fully trained on the weapons systems of this ship.”

“Then why?”

He sighed, “Because I’m prince Vik, and outside of Rilok and Telidur who I grew up knowing, everyone else worships the ground I walk on.  Even as the eighteenth heir, they’re all kissing my ass constantly.  It’s damned annoying, forgive the bluntness.  On that Stolavii ship, you had no trouble giving me orders, or talking to me like I was a normal person.  That kind of thing is priceless to me, especially since you are qualified or exceed qualifications in all the other areas.  Even when you found out who I was, and called me highness, it was more sarcastic than respectful.  I need a person on the team, who’s not afraid to give me a different or dissenting opinion, that’s you.  You also think differently, and this current plan we’re following isn’t something one of us would have thought of, even if it’s obvious in hindsight.

He smirked, “Sure about that?”

He sighed, “At least that, I don’t know.  I won’t rule anything out.”

I asked, “How do you feel about my friendship with Jillintara?”

He frowned, and for the first time I met him, he looked unsure.

“I don’t know.  She makes me doubt what I know sometimes.  I’ve been considering giving her freedom to leave the ship, and I’ve already given her money to spend on herself under a budgetary item to get around awkward questions.  She’s not the same as the others, which says to me that the experiment was a success.”

I nodded, “If you want my opinion, she’s a gorgeous loving sensuous woman, a living being.  You should definitely let her off the ship if she wants to go.”

He asked, “Did she say she was unhappy?”

I shook my head, “On the contrary, she’s very pleased and happy, with that one exception, and it’s more a wistful thing I think, rather than anything that truly upsets her.”

He said, “That’s good to hear.”

The rest of the evening, I told him a little more about my life back on Earth, and my plans for the future.  Though I wasn’t really sure what I was going to do after both my required year was up, along with my five courses.  Maybe I’d be able to still work on this ship, while I pursued science, technology, and A.I. independently.  I had a feeling I was going to change a lot over the next year, and probably get very attached to the captain, Telidur and Jillintara as well.
