CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

“I’ll call Sky and tell him!” Seath said, pulling out his phone.  As Seath spoke quickly to Sky and conveyed the news to him, Storm concentrated on Emilia’s scent.

He closed his eyes and let his dragon senses take over completely.  He could feel her fear, anger and pain.  She was hurting, deeply.  Storm’s eyes snapped open and he staggered back at the sharp stab of pain in his own heart.

He could feel the anguish that Emilia was experiencing.  She wasn’t physically in pain, but her heartbreak and sense of betrayal was so acute, it was tearing her soul to pieces.

“Emilia,” he whispered.  “You’re not alone.  I’m with you.  I’m coming for you.”

Seath stuffed his phone back in his pocket and hurried to Storm.  “Sky’s on his way.  He’ll be here in a jiffy.”  He stared at Storm and gasped.  “Storm, your eyes are glowing and...”

Storm roared as every cell in his body burned and splintered into a million fragments.  The shields that had kept his beast buried for years were falling away.  His dragon was fully awakened, and was rising, pushing all the way up to the surface.

His dragon had never broken out of his skin before, but now there was no containing the fury and might of his beast.  His dragon would not be leashed.

Storm’s dragon exploded from his skin, and he shifted fully into dragon form.

“Storm!  You...you shifted!” Seath shouted.

Storm unfurled his powerful wings and took to the sky.  He locked onto Emilia’s scent and flew out of Shadow Point.

He kept flying westward, passing countless small towns and forests.  He only slowed his flight when he heard a distant shout behind him.  It sounded like Seath!

Storm turned around and saw Sky flying hard behind him.  His big brother was in dragon form, and on his back was Seath, Gramma and Ne-ma.

Gramma and Ne-ma?

Storm jerked in shock and dipped a few feet before regaining altitude.

What was Gramma and Ne-ma doing here?

He blinked hard and stared again.  No, he wasn’t hallucinating.  The two grandmothers were indeed sitting behind Seath, holding on to the spikes on Sky’s back.

“Why didn’t you wait for us?” Seath yelled as Sky closed in on him.

“Storm!”  Gramma hollered and gave him a quick wave.  “You should have waited for us. Thank goodness we caught hold of Sky! Otherwise we would have missed the flight!”

“We’re coming with you,” Ne-ma said.  “We’ll help you rescue Emilia!  We can fight real well.  We know karate,” Ne-ma added and demonstrated a karate chop which almost sent Gramma flying off Sky’s back.

Storm nodded and continued flying.  There was no time to waste.  Emilia was in grave danger.

Emilia was a unicorn shifter, and the blood and horn of a unicorn possessed great magical and healing properties.  Emilia was still alive now, but time was running out.

Storm concentrated on her scent and kept flying.  Sky kept pace with him, following his lead.  They flew for miles and miles, past towns, forests and mountains.

A storm was brewing in the horizon, but Storm kept flying, paying no need to the darkening clouds and the thunder.  Sky swerved sharply as lightning flashed but Storm just kept going.

Storm knew what he was, and he was aware of the great power within him.  As a stormfire dragon, he was impervious to lightning.  A bolt of lightning could strike him and it would have no effect on him at all.

Rain began to pour and Storm heard Seath cursing loudly behind him.

As Storm flew towards the coastline, the rain got heavier and the wind began to blow violently.

He landed on the beach as a human.

The beach was completely deserted.  No one in their right mind would be on the beach in this treacherous weather.  There were no boats out on the water.  The ferocious waves would have capsized any boats or dashed them to pieces against the rocks.

The rain hammered down on him, washing away the last traces of Emilia’s scent.
