Unexpected Guest: A Riverton Crossing Novel - Book Three by Savannah Maris (25)

29

Evan motioned for Mitchell to follow him as he took the package along with its contents and walked to the office at the opposite end of the house. When they closed the door, Evan slammed the contents on the desk. “What the fuck? Why today?” Evan said through gritted teeth.

“Man, you okay?” Mitchell asked.

“Are you fucking kidding me? Hell no, I’m not okay.” Evan glared at him with his chest heaving.

“You seemed okay out there,” Mitchell said with a jerk of his head.

“Because Ginger doesn’t need to see me like this. I swear to all things holy, if this asshole stresses her out and she loses the baby, I’m going to kill him with my own two hands,” Evan said as his voice continually grew softer.

“What do you want to do?” Mitchell asked.

Evan grabbed his phone and scrolled through his contacts. “Ben, Ginger received a delivery today.” He listened for a few seconds. “I’m going back to the station for a few hours. Are you coming to the rehearsal tonight? It’s just the wedding party, family, and a few close friends. Nathan and Sam will be here.” A few seconds passed. “I’ll meet you there in an hour.”

When Evan disconnected the call, he looked at Mitchell. “Did you not see the delivery truck drive up? I mean, I was picking up the phone to check on Ginger when I saw the security feed. We’re going to have to do something to notify us when someone enters or leaves. Maybe put a monitor in Roger’s office at the barn.”

“I was out back with the herd talking with Roger. I agree. Is there something they can add to the system?”

“Yeah, we’ll talk to them after the wedding. I don’t think they could come out today,” Evan said looking at his watch.

“True. Her parents should be here anytime, so that’ll help. I’ve got a few more things to take care of, then I’ll be in here this afternoon. What time are you getting off work?” Mitchell asked.

“By three. Rehearsal doesn’t start until six.” Evan ran his hands through his hair. “Nathan’s running out of time to find something.” Evan put everything back into the envelope and took a deep breath before he left the office.

“I’m going to check on her before I leave,” Evan said as they walked down the hall. He heard the girls talking as he stood outside their bedroom door.

“What if Evan doesn’t find this guy? What if I lose the baby?” Ginger said.

“He’ll find him, and I feel sorry for the guy when he does. Evan’s liable to kill him or make him wish he were dead,” Kayla said.

“Thanks, y’all,” Evan said as he entered the room. “I need my girl for a minute, please.”

Kayla patted Evan’s arm as she walked past. Evan sat on the edge of the bed beside Ginger. “Darlin’, I have to go back for a little while. I’m giving these to Ben,” he said as he held up the envelope. “Who all touched them?”

“Me, Kayla, Mitchell, and you. Cat was in the kitchen until Mitchell came through the door. Kayla showed them to her, but she didn’t touch them.”

“Okay. Nathan has a picture of a guy he hopes to find a front to go with the back we have. As soon as we get his face, we’ll run him through every database, including one for military personnel. We’re going to get him.” Evan kissed her forehead.

“I don’t want him ruining our wedding, that’s all.”

“Gin, I’m more worried about him adding stress to you. Are you sure you’re okay?”

Ginger clasped her hands around one of his. “We’re okay. I’m not going to worry because I know you’re doing enough for the both of us.”

“Damn straight,” he said. “Your parents should be here soon. I’ll see you around three.” Evan kissed her while he rubbed her belly. “Hang in there, bud. Be good for Mama.”

Ginger smiled with tears in her eyes as he walked out the door.

As soon as Evan got in his car, he hit a speed dial number.

“Cox.”

“Do you have anything yet?”

“Hell no. We’ve got eight more discs. I don’t think I can see straight anymore,” Nathan said.

“Ginger received a package today. Our rehearsal is tonight. We need something, man.”

“I know. I’m working on it. We’ll find him,” Nathan said before Evan disconnected the call.
