Bloodlines: Shifters of Alaska Book 1 by Gisele St. Claire (22)

Chapter 23

Over a week had gone by, and there were still no developments on what was happening with Jordan. To say she was afraid was an understatement; Sonja was in fact, petrified. Her sister was gone, possibly even killed by the Kodiak’s that had come to steal her away. Mamma Sable and Lennox were very secretive about the nature of what was going on, and they intentionally kept Sonja in the dark on all the matters. She would often be swept away by Jude while the pair sat in the kitchen having their discussions.

Could she blame them? Sonja knew that she was very emotional and if she got involved with what was happening regarding her sister, she would have no input that could benefit either party.

She sat alone, in her room, trying to get some reading done when she heard a knock on her door. Sonja jumped at the sound, having lost herself in the fictional world of her characters as well as her own imagination of where Jordan could be. She was so lost at that point, that the shock of reality made her bounce.

“Come in,” She called.

“Honey,” Mamma Sable said softly, “Lennox wants to talk to you. Will you come down and see him?” The old woman asked. Admittedly, Sonja wanted nothing to do with anyone today. A week of sheer terror and living in her own creative mind lead her to nothing but fear.

“Of course,” She replied, knowing that if she didn’t come down, then it would be far worse than not knowing what was going on. Sonja pulled herself off of the bed, straightened up, brought a brush down her blonde hair roughly to take out any knots that may have been formed through the night and prepared to go down. Sable had already taken her leave, returning to the alpha in the kitchen.

It was only when Sonja began moving from the room, towards the kitchen, that she realized this was an even bigger mistake than she first anticipated. Lennox was the only one that would have any knowledge regarding Jordan, and even he might have had none.

But what if he did? What if he knew that she was dead and it had taken this long for them to build up the courage to tell her. It was a possibility, and there was more chance of this being true than him saying that she was safe and home.

Sonja couldn’t handle the thought, and her pace quickened as she moved towards the kitchen. She burst through the door, almost excited to see Jude and Lennox, the threat of tears in her eye.

“Alpha Lennox,” Sonja whispered.

“Sonja,” Lennox replied.

“I heard you wanted to see me?” She asked, quizzically.

“I did. I wanted to be the one to let you know that we don’t have any leads on your sister just yet. We’re trying to find her, and we’re sure she’s safe, we just need a little more time.” Lennox said.

“Why come all this way just to tell me that?” Sonja never stepped out of line when talking to Lennox, but this conversation seemed to prove pointless. Why would he come here to say that there had been no development? It was just another way of breaking her down another step further.

“I’ll let that slide because you’re upset. Don’t step out of line ag—” Before Lennox could finish his sentence, he felt his cell phone buzz in his pocket. He wasn't just here to speak about Jordan and her retrieval; he wanted to speak with Sonja about what would happen had they not been able to retrieve Jordan. Someone had to continue the bloodline, and if Jordan was cozying up with the Kodiak’s, he would have to find another.

Who better than the only other Kodiak he knew?

“It looks like we’ve got some unexpected visitors,” Lennox said after reading the message on his phone, slipping it back into his pocket and standing tall from his hunched position against the kitchen counter.

“Jude, we’ve got to move.” He walked over to Mamma Sable, leaning in and whispering in her ear, “The Kodiak’s are coming. Get her somewhere safe. We can’t lose both sisters in one week.” He stood tall again and turned to Sonja, nodded his head and left, Jude following.

“What did he say to you?” Sonja asked. To her knowledge, there was nothing going on, other than them having to leave to take care of business. Unexpected visitors also seemed like an odd way of phrasing who was around, but that was the life of an Alpha, Sonja considered, having to keep everyone else in the dark, while they conducted their business. It just made sense; why have your people worry when they have no need to even know what problems are?

Sable was hesitant to reply. She kept her tongue until she figured out what the best way to phrase her words, “He told me to keep you safe, no matter what happens. Lennox has your best interests at heart, honey, so trust me us. We need to get you upstairs.”

Sonja found the situation odd. She was uncomfortable with it all, but wouldn’t go against Mamma Sable and Alpha Lennox. They had the right ideas and best intentions for her at heart.

“Okay,” Sonja replied, reluctant.

Mamma Sable took the lead, taking Sonja’s hand in her own, leading her to her bedroom. When they got into the room, Sable took a seat on the bed, patting it so that Sonja would come sit.

“Just stay in here, Sonja.” Mamma Sable cupped Sonja’s face in her hand before getting up.

“Okay.” The only reply she thought of.

Sable walked back to the door, but midway between the bed and the door she stopped and turned to face Sonja. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. She turned back and headed out the door, pulling it shut behind her.

Sonja heard Mamma Sable toying with the lock, the sound of metal on metal striking her ear as she listened to it, “Are you locking me in?” She shouted.

“Yes, honey. You need to stay safe. It’s for your own good.” Sable replied. Sonja made a mad dash for the door, but by the time she got there, it was too late. The door had been locked, and she was trapped while something was coming.

If she wasn’t afraid before, she was now. It was no doubt the Kodiak’s, the same that came for Jordan she assumed, hunting her down. She got back onto her bed, lying down, eyes closed.

She could only lose herself in terror and her imagination now.
