My Property: A Steele Fairy Tale by C.M. Steele (11)

Lara

“T, I want to wear that dress,” I whined to my younger by ten minutes twin sister. The house was clean and ready for our little get together in the woods. We’d inherited three houses, one for each of us Bacon girls. My twin and I had the two smaller ones that are closer together and our older sister, Diana, had the massive one down the road. Each of the houses were beautiful just from the images we received at the will reading. Why two complete strangers wanted to give them to us was a mystery, but you never look a gift horse in the mouth. We signed the papers and now we were ready to celebrate.

What was interesting was the owners must have been leasing them out because you could see some things that belonged to men. I wondered if there were workers in the area that must have stayed here instead of making the long drive. It was quite a ways from our home in Colorado Springs.

She adjusted the dress and stared at herself in the mirror. “Bitch, I don’t care. I grabbed it first. Besides, it doesn’t go with your eyes.” It was all black, it went with everything. I loved the neckline that cut square and low across my cleavage. We both had more than enough chest to make it super sexy, but she was being a brat.

“You fucking twat, if it doesn’t match my eyes it doesn’t match yours,” I countered. I threw her a glare and flipped her off.

“It’s the personality written in mine.” I rolled my eyes at her, but Tara was a sweetheart with sass enough for the world. We were truly total opposites in tastes, but, strange as it may be, it worked and made us closer. She was carefree and fun-loving, I wasn’t. It was our parents’ deaths that had only made things worse. I was fearful and hesitant and Tara thought that life could be taken at any time so you should live it up. She was right, so I tried to follow her lead.

We traveled, flirted with danger, and came back home to our overly protective big sister. Our parents’ death made her our protector. Our grandparents were just out to make us happy and let us do as we pleased. Now we’re ready to party. The music and drinks were set up and everything was ready to go but us.

“Whatever, your ass looks fat in it anyway. I’ll go with the red dress. Maybe we’ll find some boyfriends there. You did remember to invite tons of people, right?”

“Of course, I did. Do I look stupid to you?” she asked, while staring at herself in the mirror, eyes wide as she applied her mascara.

“Is that a rhetorical question?” I asked, laughing as I walked back into the closet to get the dress. I came back out with it in my hands, swinging it from side to side.

“I’m going to beat your ass one day,” she said while applying her gloss and mean mugging me through the mirror.

“No, you won’t because you love me.” I gave her a squeeze and left to get dressed, catching her smiling as I did so.

The house wasn’t huge. It had three bedrooms and an office. I didn’t have the key to the latter, but if I didn’t get one, I’d call a locksmith to come and change it. Not that I would have a need for it anyway. I wasn’t the book smart one. All the brains must have went to Diana. I was on my way to being a cop. I didn’t tell anyone because my sisters would be completely against it. Not in today’s climate, but after our parents’ death, I felt there needed to be more good guys and less devils on the streets. Tara and I joked that since we were twins, we must have had to split the IQ. I walked into the main bedroom closet.

I freaking loved it and the clothes already in it. The man that left here smelled incredible to me. Everything in the room smelled like him. There was a windbreaker hanging and I had to press my nose into it every time I came into this room. We only got here yesterday, and I swear I keep hoping he’ll show up. I shoved it back in place and grabbed the other dress I had packed.

I slipped on the red dress with a pair of heels and felt extremely feminine. Maybe my mystery man would show tonight. That thought is the only reason I was dressing so sexy tonight because it was only a house party with a couple of our friends.

I took my makeup bag out of my suitcase and went to work making myself look irresistible. Once I was done fixing my face, I totally looked like a vamp. My black heels were tied with a bow at my ankles and the hem of the dress barely covered my ass. I wore my favorite black and red heart necklace. They were my favorite colors.

“I’m going to wear my hair up, you?” I asked Tara, taking in my current look. My face was a bit pink today. I wondered why I was feeling hot, it was crazy how flushed I was.

“I think the same. You know this air out here isn’t good for our hair.”

“Frizz central,” I grunted. Our hair was only curly when wet, but it was the humidity that turned us into little Chows. I made my hair tight and smooth adding some smoothing serum and giving it a once over with a comb. It was perfect. I stared at myself, knowing that I looked good, but I still felt like something was missing. I had to find out what it was. My body was burning with a heat that was unexplainable.

“Lara, goodness, I feel so hot,” Tara exclaimed.

“It’s not that warm outside today. Let me check the thermostat,” I said. I walked out of the room just as there was a knock at the door.
