The site was on the other part of the city, so it took me an hour with my car to get there. I felt like I was running behind. When I arrived I was met with a lot of construction workers and noise. The place was full with activity— everyone pretty busy as they went on with their duties.

I was beginning to squint because of the strong sunshine, so I put my sunglasses on.

I showed my ID to the security guys on the gate and they let me in, giving me a construction hat to put on. As I walked around the site, taking in the concrete construction that was yet to be the first floor of the hospital, I took notes in my small notebook and snapped some photos.

Everything was going well, and as far as I could see there were no problems. The land was huge, and by the number of workers and the length of the first floor, it was going to be one of the biggest hospitals in this area.

By the time I finished with my errand, the morning had already almost completely passed. I turned around with the intention to leave, when I noticed the bulldozers arriving. I took the camera out and took a shot of the bulldozers before I finally walked back to my car.

“Damn,” my feet were blistered from wearing heels on the site. I would need to remember to grab some flats before I left home to keep in my car from now on.

Just as I reached my car, my phone rang. I took it out of the bag and saw Lauren’s name across the screen. We’d been friends for years. She was the ying to my yang.

I answered her call, “Hello?”

“Hello, sunshine!” she sang, and I rolled my eyes, chuckling because of her silly nickname. She always called me “sunshine”, “flower” or something equally childish. I loved her silliness, though.

“Hello, grumpy,” I responded, using the nickname that was completely opposite from what Lauren was.

“Do you want to have lunch with me? We haven’t seen each other in ages.”

I glanced at my watch and saw that I did have some time for lunch with her. Lauren was right—we hadn’t seen each other in ages, and I missed her.

“Okay. Let’s meet in about fifteen minutes at our usual place?”

I entered the little pub that was Lauren’s and my most favorite place. It was cozy and it had a beautiful vintage interior. Each table had a small pot with flowers, and the walls were decorated with retro quotes in various colors and fonts. The service was always so polite, but the best thing of all was their food—the dishes were so good that it could make people lick their fingers after eating.

It also had food to go, and I decided I would order the roast beef with potatoes and a salad for Grant as I looked over the menu.

Just as I took a seat at one of the tables next to the windows Lauren came in, looking pretty in her long flowery dress and red hair collected in neat bun.

“Sunshine!” She exclaimed when she saw me, kissing me on the cheeks before she took her seat across from me.

The waiter came and we ordered our food.

“Lauren!” I smacked her hand, rolling my eyes.

I smiled at Lauren, enjoying the time with her. She was always so bubbly and cute, and that was what I liked about her the most. She wasn’t the go getter like me. She wanted family life and lots of children. I also wanted to have family and children, but I was ambitious enough to pursue my career. But I liked her dreamy ways. She would find her own way. “By the way, that dress is absolutely gorgeous.” I pointed at her flowery design, trying to imagine what would Grant’s reaction be if I appeared in this kind of outfit in front of him. The difference between Lauren’s company and mine was that they had more flexibility when it came to their business casual ideas. She could fully express her style, because the atmosphere there wasn’t as rigid as in LQT. I wished I could wear my favorite cute shirts with bows and casual jeans or sandals, but there were some rules that needed to be followed.

“Then it’s settled. Anyway, I hope everything goes well with you and your boss,” she said, offering me an encouraging smile.

“Me too,” I answered honestly.

We would be alone in his office tonight too. Would anything happen? Would we continue from where we stopped yesterday?

My nerves started working, and I couldn’t wait to finish with lunch and see Grant again.
