Meeting Dr. Feelgood by Riley Baxter (24)

Eight weeks later…

“I can’t believe you managed to get me pregnant the first time we had unprotected sex Myles!” Kayla exclaimed as she stared at the positive home pregnancy test Myles had forced her to take.

“I’ve been telling you for the past three weeks that something wasn’t right, and you refused to listen, Honey Bee. You’ve been fatigued and lightheaded more times than you’re willing to admit to me. Now, do I need to call your OB and make an appointment, or will you?” he inquired.

“Damn it, Myles I’ll do it. We haven’t even been married six months, and we’re already at this stage. Aren’t you worried about how we’ll adjust in our marriage after welcoming a baby?” she asked with a little concern in her voice?

“I love you Kayla, and you’re getting pregnant so soon into our marriage won’t change that. Stop worrying so much it can’t be good for you or our baby” he said with a wide grin on his face.

Kayla decided to let it go, for now, if he wasn’t worried or mad about her getting pregnant now, then she would just go with the flow. I’m going to have a baby, she thought to herself with complete and utter shock.

Later that week, Kayla and Myles sat in the doctor’s office waiting for the doctor to come in the room. “Honey Bee, are you ok with all of this?” he asked.

“Yep, if you’re good with this so am I, babe,” she said.

Before she could elaborate further, her OB and nurse walked into the room. “Hey Kayla, how are things going? I understand that you took a home pregnancy test and got a positive result, is that right?” her doctor questioned.

“Yes, Dr. Kennedy that’s correct. By the way, this is my husband, Myles Feelgood. He and I got married about two months ago. I started feeling sluggish about three weeks ago and had some dizzy spells at work. At first, I didn’t think anything about it, but then I started noticing some changes in my moods. So, at the insistence of my husband, I took a home pregnancy test.”

Laughing, Dr. Kennedy looked at Myles. “Didn’t waste any time, did you? And are you the Dr. Myles Feelgood, Springfield’s Top Orthopedic Surgeon?”

“Yes, one and the same. Pleased to make your acquaintance Dr. Kennedy,” he said shaking her hand.

“So now that those pleasantries are out of the way, you want to confirm whether or not we have a bun in this oven Dr. Kennedy?” Kayla asked.

“Sure thing, Kayla. Let’s take a look shall we?” Dr. Kennedy said sitting down on the circular chair and reaching for the stirrups.

Thirty minutes later, Kayla and Myles were leaving the office with a confirmed pregnancy, a June 4th, 2018 due date, a prescription for prenatal vitamins, and a date for her next prenatal appointment a month later. “So, babe, how are we gonna tell our families that we’re having a baby? With everyone being out of town, it will be hard to gather them all together. What’s your suggestion?” she asked.

“I think we need to wait to announce this pregnancy Honey Bee, until we make it safely out of your first trimester. Then we can decide how to tell them all.”

Having a plan in place, she leaned her head on the headrest in the car thinking about how their lives would change in a matter of months. Part of her was excited about the changes while the other part of her was worried about how the pregnancy would progress. Kayla said a quick prayer hoping everything would go okay.

Four weeks later, Kayla was in the bathroom at work and noticed some bleeding when she went to wipe. She’d seen some spots in her underwear the day before, but now she was getting worried. She quickly finished up, washed her hands and exited the bathroom when she got back to her office she closed the door and called her doctor. To be on the safe side, she was told to come to the office so that she could be examined. After confirming that she would be there soon, she proceeded to call Myles who was at work.

“Hey Honey Bee, how’s your day going? You feel ok today?” Myles asked answering on the second ring.

“Baby, I don’t want you to panic, but I have some bleeding, and Dr. Kennedy wants me to come in. I can drive myself there or have Rachel take me, I know you’re busy I just wanted to let you know what was going on” she said rushing through her spiel.

“Nobody is more important than you and our baby, Honey Bee. I’m on my way. I’m taking you myself. See you in a little bit.” Hurriedly, he disconnected the call.

Forty-five minutes later, Myles pulled into the K.M.B. Consulting parking lot he had broken a ton of laws as he sped all the way from Springfield.

Lord, please cover my Honey Bee and our baby? They are my lifeline.

The standard drive time was an hour, and he’d shaved off fifteen minutes, but this was an emergency. He was a wreck as he thought of the worst-case scenarios for what was going on. These situations played in his mind all the way up the elevator and to Kayla’s office. Those conditions caused him to bypass Kayla’s secretary and walk right into her office.

Perplexed, he came to a stop in the office noticing that she wasn’t sitting at her desk which almost caused him to lose it until he heard her throwing up in the bathroom in her office. Quickly making his way to the door, he snatched it open “Honey Bee, are you okay? We gotta get you to the doctor baby.”

Kayla was trying to stop the food from spewing from her mouth but was held captive by her heaving stomach and the porcelain God. Once she felt like she had returned her breakfast and snack, she tried to stand up but was grabbed by Myles who aided her in the process. Swatting his hands and covering her mouth, she chided, “Myles, give me a minute to rinse my mouth and brush my teeth. I’m pretty sure I can do that by myself,” she said pointing to the door.

Fifteen minutes passed, and they were on their way to see Dr. Kennedy, neither had said a word as they both pondered what was going on. “Myles, we’ve got to talk about something, anything to break up this silence. Talk to me baby,” she said looking at him as he drove.

“I’m scared. You and this baby mean the world to me and we haven’t made it out of the first trimester yet, and there’s an issue. I’m worried.”

“I’m scared too Myles, but we’re just about out of our first trimester. I’m almost fourteen weeks now, and from the books I’ve read, our chances of miscarriage decrease at this stage. Dr. Kennedy will let us know what’s going on and we’ll go from there ok? Whatever happens, we will handle it together.”

Pulling up to Dr. Kennedy’s office, Myles parked the car and got out to help Kayla out. As soon as they got to the door, he turned to her and said, “Whatever happens it’s you and me, Honey Bee. We can do this.”

They walked into the office hand in hand.

Two hours later, Myles and Kayla sat on the couch in their living room discussing what happened at the doctor. “I can’t believe Dr. Kennedy said that to you babe!” Kayla laughed as she recalled the doctor’s words.

Smirking and puffing out his chest a bit, he replied, “Well it just goes to show that I’m the man. Me and little Feelgood got you experiencing cervical changes causing you to release extra blood.”

“Fool, that is so not a reason to get cocky. You’re lucky that’s all it was and nothing else more serious. And you made Dr. Kennedy put us in sex time out, so we’ll see how boastful you are when little Feelgood starts getting backed up,” she told him laughing as his face dropped from the reminder.

“Uh, you know there’s nothing ‘little’ about him and don’t remind me. We aren’t happy about having to sit in time out, but as long as you and the baby are fine, then I’ll manage. And I can’t believe how strong the baby’s heartbeat was. Our baby is a trooper. I think it’s time to let our family know, since Dr. Kennedy said we’ll be entering our second trimester later this week. How should we tell them?”

“Well, I think we should mail them a copy of our sonogram from today with a message that says Dr. Feelgood has struck again, looks who’s coming June 2018.”

“Corny but doable Honey Bee and since I don’t know how to spread the news, let’s do it. I’ll go to Kinkos tomorrow and have copies made for everyone, and then I’ll ship them off on Friday. That way, we’ll be officially in the second trimester when they get the news. Can you have your assistant type up the message for all the sonograms? Now, how about you let me help you to our room, so you and baby Feelgood can take a nap.”

Laughing, she replied, “You’re always trying to get me in bed. And yes, I’ll ask my assistant to type them up for us. But no sense in telling Rachel, she already knows since she’s caught me throwing up so many times in my office that I had to tell her. But I had to give her a “hush” gift, which was naming her as the baby’s God mom. I didn’t tell her that technically, baby Feelgood has four God moms’ and four aunties because pacifying her at the time was critical.”

The following weekend, Kayla and Myles were lounging around watching movies enjoying each other’s company when they heard the doorbell. Not expecting anyone, Myles headed to the door and lo and behold—it was his and Kayla’s parents. Since the wedding, they had become close and kept in touch better than their children expected, so they must have arranged to drop in on their children together.

What seemed surprising was how they all appeared to be unhappy with him. In fact, both sets of dads shook their heads at him while the mothers looked like they would cry at any moment.

“Uh, hi you guys. What brings you all by? We weren’t expecting y—”

Before he could get the last word out entirely, Kayla’s mom grunted at him. “Well, we didn’t know that it was a crime to come visit our children,” Regina retorted with attitude.

“Can you believe this Gina?” Catherine said raising her hand to her chest in a dramatic fashion. “First, they send us a postcard telling us that we’re going to be grandparents as if we don’t deserve more and now, he makes us feel like we’re bothering them.”

Well damn, looks like we managed to offend them by sending the postcard baby announcement. Guess Honey Bee’s idea didn’t go over well after all. “Don’t be so dramatic Mom, I was just saying we didn’t know you were coming. Come on, in. You guys are always welcome in our home,” he said opening the door wide to allow them to enter the house.

Laughing and slapping him on his back, Anthony and Keith shook their heads then followed wordlessly after their wives.

“Now, we are really in for some shit that hit the fan and we didn’t even know it,” he said closing the door and following behind the four.

Kayla was so engrossed in the episode of Chicago Fire her and Myles had been watching, she hadn’t realized that it took a while for Myles to come back from answering the door. She sat with her feet extended on the ottoman and rubbing circles on her stomach. She felt excited to see how big she would get while carrying this baby. Just as the episode ended, she opened her mouth to yell at Myles that she was about to start the next episode when in walked her parents, his parents, and an irritated-looking Myles. “Hey, what brings you all by?” She stood to greet them hugging and kissing each of them.

“Kayla Michelle, I know you aren’t going to just to ignore the elephant in the room?” Regina asked with her hands on her hips.

“Exactly why on earth, would you two send us a postcard announcing such important news? I mean really!” Catherine looked put out by the gesture.

Kayla gazed at her and Myles’ parents trying to determine how to engage in this conversation. She didn’t know her pregnancy announcement would be received so negatively by their parents. She’d figured that they would all be too excited about the news to think anything about how they were informed. As she looked around the room, she realized that maybe she was wrong. “I’m sorry everyone, I didn’t mean to offend you all by sending the postcard announcement. I thought that it was a cute idea and you all would be shocked and elated by the news?” Becoming emotional, she began wiping the tears that started to fall.

Seeing Kayla’s tears caused Myles to become protective, he walked over to hug Kayla to let her know it would be okay. Once he released her, he turned around to face their parents to nip this ridiculous guilt trip in the bud before it made Kayla more upset. “Listen you guys, I understand that you feel slighted or offended or something but how my wife and I chose to inform you of the pregnancy shouldn’t negate your happiness over the blessed event. Now, I refuse to have you all upset Kayla any further, so can you please accept our apologies, so we can move on?”

“Well I’ll be damned,” Anthony said as he stared at Myles with even more respect than he had before as he stepped forward to hug Kayla. “Baby girl, stop crying, you know how dramatic your Momma can be. I’m excited about the newest addition to our family.”

Feeling chastised, Regina and Catherine looked at each other and then their children. “I guess he got us told huh?” Regina said feeling bad about making Kayla cry. “Kayla, I’m so sorry I just thought that you would have called me and told me personally. It felt a little impersonal to receive a postcard, but I never meant to make you cry. Please forgive me?”

“Yes, Kayla forgive me as well. I’m elated about the baby,” Catherine said as she and Regina hugged her from both sides.

Feeling the need to save his sweet daughter in law from his wife and her mother, Keith stepped forward. “Alright ladies, I think she gets the message. Now can you please stop suffocating my poor grandbaby?” Pushing the two women aside, he gave Kayla a quick kiss and brief hug. “Kayla, you have made an old man so very happy. Thank you.”

Kayla now felt better after Keith, and her Dad smoothed things over a bit. Not to mention the way her husband stood up for her. “You guys, it really wasn’t our intention to cause any offense. I thought the idea was a great way to give you the news. And the sonogram was intended to be a keepsake. But we’ll know for the next time to just call you all on three-way or something more formal. Now since we have expressed the problem, how about we go out to dinner to officially celebrate?”

With round eyes, the parents all mouthed at each other in excitement, “The next time?”
