Against All Odds (Full Throttle Book 1) by Elizabeth Knox, Erin Trejo (12)

Chapter 12

Phoenix

Fuck! I’m so fucked in the head right now. She’s testing me, and I know she is, but I need to be able to protect her and cowering in a fucking safe room isn’t doing it, but that look of fear in her eyes, shit this girl is getting to me.

“This shit secure?” I ask although I don’t know why. I know it is. Kenna raises an eyebrow and makes me chuckle.

“Stupid question.”

“Do you think they were shooting at me or you?” she asks sounding so unsure. I hate that that fear is there, and I’d do anything to take it away.

Running my hand over my face, I shrug. “Hard to say. I have enemies and I’m sure thanks to your father and who he is, you do too. We got cell service in here?” Kenna nods her head slowly as I slide my phone out and call Lucky. I tell him everything that just went down before passing the phone to Kenna. She takes it and holds it in her hands trying to decide what to do. No, it’s not that. She’s trying to decide if she trusts me and my guys enough to give them what they need to check the feeds from her cameras. She’s silent for what seems like forever, but I don’t push her. This is a turning point in our relationship and I need to see if she’s into me enough to give me this. I know she could call her guys in to check this shit out too, but this is something I need to do, and I think deep down she knows that.

Kenna raises the phone to her ear and tells Lucky everything he needs to get into her system quickly. She passes me the phone back and I smile at her.

“Gimme a bit. This chick’s shit is like a fortress. I’ve never even seen this kind of security before, brother. Shit this is high class shit!” The excited tone in  his voice makes me chuckle.

“Do what you do, Lucky. I’ll be around.” Hanging up I slide the phone back into my pocket and focus my gaze on Kenna.

“I think my boy is in love with your security system,” I tell her trying to get a smile out of her.

“It’s the best of the best. I was told it couldn’t be hacked,” she adds.

“You gave him the info, babe. He isn’t hackin’ it. Just surprised him that you had all this. It makes me feel better that you do,” I tell her watching her eyes shoot to mine.

“Why is that?”

“I know you’re safe when I’m not around.” She smiles softly as I glance around the room we’re in. A room? Fuck this is another home. The more I look around and wander, the more I know Kenna is smart.

“You look surprised,” she says coming to stand next to me.

“I gotta admit, I am a little shocked. A whole other livin’ space? Wouldn’t have thought that.” Kenna giggles next to me but I can still see the tension in her. I reach for her, wrapping my arms around her and lead her to the couch. Pulling her into my lap, I hold her tightly, running my hand up and down her back to soothe her.

“Never been shot at?” I ask already knowing the answer to that. She’s nearly trembling. Kenna shakes her head no and I sigh.

“First times always a little scary. You know what I’m riskin’ not goin’ after them, don’t you, Ken?” she shifts slightly and looks up at me.

“I know but I also see where your priorities lie. As much as you wanted to go after them you knew I needed you more. That means a lot to me, Phoenix.” Her body still trembles, and I figure I need to get her mind off all this. We’re safe in here and she needs to feel safe with me.

“Tell me about things.”

“What sort of things?” she giggles.

“Anything. What do you expect from me? I mean, shit babe, even your safe room is nicer than the clubhouse. I’ve never been the flashy type of person. I’m not poor, but I sure as hell don’t live like you do.” Kenna wiggles again making my cock respond. This girl needs to be still before this whole chat goes the wrong way.

“We have charity events and things like that. You would have to dress up,” she says looking me in the eye. I smirk and say, “You think I can’t pull off a tuxedo? Come on, darlin’. Look at this face.” I tease her finally getting a laugh out of her.

“I never said that! I know you could pull it off. I’ve never seen you in anything but jeans and t-shirts. I just wonder how you’d react to being around a group of people that aren’t like you.”

“Aren’t like me?”

“I don’t mean to be offensive, Phoenix. You are who you are, and I like that about you.”

Pressing a kiss to her forehead I reassure her. “I know what you mean. I think I can play nicely with others if need be. I’m not that far gone,” I chuckle. Kenna looks up at me and fuck, I want to get lost in those eyes of hers.

“You’re not gone. You’re you.”

“What about you? What would expect of me?”

“I want you naked ridin’ me all the time,” I tease her with a smirk on my face. Kenna slaps at my chest making me laugh.

“I just need to know that when shit goes bad you’d be there for me. I’m not a vocal guy when it comes to club shit. I keep a lot inside and I know that one day it’s gonna come back to haunt my ass, but I’ve never had a woman that I trusted with that information. Trusted with my secrets. That’s a huge step for me.” The truth seems to appease her.

Kenna moves to straddle my lap cupping my face in her warm soft hands. Her lips come to meet mine, a slow passionate kiss. My hands find her hips, holding her in place as I let her have control of the moment. I know that having control is a huge thing to her but she’s going to have to learn to hand it over to me in the bedroom. Having her run this city by my side would be idealistic but in bed? No, in bed she’s all fucking mine but I’m man enough to know that the stress from the shooting earlier has her on edge and I’ll give her this one. For now, anyway.

“I don’t think I’ve ever wanted anyone the way I want you, Phoenix,” she whispers against my lips. Running my hand up her side, to her back I grab her hair, wrapping it around my fist and tugging. Her head snaps back giving me access to her neck. I didn’t miss the gasp that escapes those sexy lips of hers either. Maybe I was wrong. Maybe she knows who the boss is in the bed. Pressing kisses along her throat to her ear, I suck her earlobe into my mouth and bite down. Kenna moans and I nearly lose control of my thoughts.

“Tell me, my sweet Kenna. How much do you want me?” Her panting is becoming more than I can take. Her body presses into mine as she grinds those perfect hips of hers against me.

“More than I probably should right now.” Wrapping my arms around her I stand taking her with me.

“Where’s that bedroom of yours?” I ask in a gruff tone. She has my body on fire but even worse? She’s working her way into my mind. She’s driving me crazy and the idea of her being the one that I share my secrets, my world with is looking better and better.

“Down the hall on the left.” Her lips move to my neck, licking and sucking at my skin. My body vibrates with so much energy I feel like I’m going to explode. How can one woman make me feel like this? Is this what love feels like? Fuck it all. In this moment, I just need this girl in my arms, in my world, in my fucking bed.

I lay her on the bed when we get into the room before ripping my clothes off. I move to hers next, taking it slow. I love watching each fucking inch of her come alive under me. I love seeing each inch of her flesh as I slowly reveal it. Kenna pants but doesn’t say a word as I remove every piece of clothing that separates us. When she’s completely naked and writhing with need, I smirk.

“Now tell me, Kenna. Where do you want me?”
