“How is everything at the shelter?”

“Ruby?”

“I’m surprised you’re willing to let Saxon spend his time there.”

“I’m still suspicious,” he said.

“Still?”

“Saxon never did anything without putting himself first. I think this is still the case.”

“I don’t see how he’s putting himself first by volunteering to spend time at an Omega shelter. How do you figure that?”

“Because he looks like he enjoys spending time with them. He’s always laughing and smiling when he’s playing with them. Sure, he’s not making a profit but he’s doing it for himself.”

“Because it makes him happy.”

“I was thinking,” I whispered.

“About what?”

“You’ve already had two today,” York said with a giggle.

“That’s still not enough. I’ve got a craving…”

“You know, you’ve been sitting around in bed all day these past few weeks. You should think about finally getting up.”

“If I remember correctly, you told me to rest. Do you really want me to swing that sledgehammer even though my injuries haven’t fully recovered?”

“No… But… It does seem like you’re milking it a little.”

“And what if I am? What if I just want to lay in bed all day with you while you feed me peanut butter and jelly sandwiches? Would that be so bad?”

York bit his bottom lip as he tried to hide his smile.

“No,” he said, shaking his head softly. “That wouldn’t be so bad. I’ll be right back…”

He pecked me on the lips before getting out of bed. I sighed as I watched his nude body leave my bedroom.

I sank into the mattress and closed my eyes with my hands behind my head.

It had been a few weeks since the fight with Golden. I spent all of my time in bed, recovering from my injuries. All the gold I’d won meant I didn’t have to worry about going to work. My days were spent lazily lying around with York by my side.

I sat up straight.

“York?”

I called out to him but there was no response.

“York, are you all right?”

I slowly got up to my feet and made my way out of the bedroom. There was no telling what happened. Perhaps Saxon was wrong and Valentine was out to get me. Or maybe Rip had returned and kidnapped York.

I headed into my apartment living room. My front door was shut and the lock was still in place. York was nowhere to be found.

“York?”

I said his name again. When I stepped into the kitchen, I found York on the ground, a broken plate next to him.

“York!”

I immediately knelt down and helped him sit up.

“York, are you all right?”

His eyes were closed.

“York?”

A strange feeling washed over me. I was a bit fearful that something was wrong with him. But there was something else. Like a fire was burning inside my belly.

“York?”

His eyes opened slowly. He stared at me and gasped softly.

“York… What’s wrong?”

He sighed a deep breath as he reached down with his arms around his stomach.
