CHAPTER SEVENTEEN 

RYLAN

Cassie and I spent the next week attached at the hip. We were inseparable and neither of us would have it any other way. 

She was still looking for her own place technically but spent all of her time at my loft outside of work. I even gave her a key and arranged with the building management to get her a parking space in the garage. 

By all of society’s normal rules, it was way too soon to live together and I figured we both knew that on the surface, especially after her relationship just ended. But we enjoyed each other so much, neither one of us wanted to stop it. Why ruin a good thing, right?

She got home from an early shift at the bakery one morning with a box full of doughnuts. It was my day off, past noon and I was still in bed watching TV. She brought the pink box right to bed and my mouth instantly watered at the smell of sugar and freshly baked dough. 

“Did you make these?” I asked as I lifted a Boston cream doughnut out of the box. 

“Yeah, we had a big order that got canceled,” she said, helping herself to a cruller. “So we all split it up between us to take home.”

I could have asked her to marry me right then. What better way to start a lazy day than freshly baked doughnuts in bed with the beautiful woman of my dreams? 

By the time we had our fill, we were both giggling and play-wrestling from the sugar high. 

“Hey, I know what we should do,” I said after pinning her beneath me.

“Yeah?” Cassie’s eyebrows lifted suggestively as her legs went around my hips. 

“Let’s go on a hike!” 

I laughed and kissed her lower lip sticking out, indicating she had other ideas. 

“It’s a beautiful day and we’ve been wanting to do this since we first met,” I said, nuzzling into her neck. “And we’ll still have all evening for bedroom activities.” 

“I guess,” she said in feigned disappointment but a smile quickly grew across her face. “Let me get my shoes on!”

A half-hour later, we walked along a winding trail flanked by grass and massive oak trees. The sun was high but the trees provided plenty of shade, dappling our path with small pockets of sunlight. 

The park wasn’t too crowded but we occasionally passed someone jogging or walking a dog.

“Man I wish I could have pets at my place,” I said as we walked away from scratching the ears of an adorable golden retriever. 

“Yeah? You like animals?” Cassie asked, keeping her pace with me on the trail.

“Love them. They’re almost like kids.” I shot her a grin. “Well, potential practice for kids anyway.”

She paused and then asked, “So you want kids one day?” 

“Definitely,” I replied, turning to look at her. “Do you?” 

She smiled back. “Definitely.”

I took her hand in mine as we walked and her fingers gently squeezed against my knuckles. We didn’t talk anymore on that subject but our connection now felt deeper. Slowly we were unlocking mysteries about each other and finding even more, deeper compatibilities. 

“Wow,” Cassie breathed as we reached the crest of the hill we’d been climbing. 

A shimmering lake stretched out before us. Rolling green hills stood majestically on the other side while a gentle breeze blew, cooling us down. Families of ducks quacked gently and swam effortlessly across the water like sailboats. 

“Okay now I’m glad you dragged me out of bed,” Cassie said, wrapping an arm around my waist. “This is beautiful.” 

“It is,” I agreed, enveloping my arm around her shoulders. “But nowhere near as beautiful as you.” 

“Stop it,” she said bashfully, nuzzling her face into my side. 

I took her chin in my hand and tilted her face up toward me. The lake had nothing on the shimmer, crystal blue of her eyes. 

“Never,” I said solemnly. “I’ll never stop reminding you how gorgeous you are.”

Her sweet lips parted and I felt her heart speed up against the side of my chest. 

I brought my mouth down to hers and the moment never felt so perfect. Her lips were cool from the crisp air and I swiped my tongue against them to warm them up. She tasted like the most refreshing drink of water after thirsting in the desert.

Like drunken animals we stumbled off the trail, still kissing ravenously and clutching and groping desperately, to a soft patch of grass under an oak tree.

We barely had time to catch a breath before we heard voices somewhere off in the distance. Someone was coming up the trail. 

We exchanged a look of panic and in a mad dash, scrambled to put our clothes back on. By the time the hikers, an elderly couple with a small fluffy dog, reached the top, we were sitting innocently on the grass under the tree, looking out across the lake. 

“Nothing to see here,” Cassie whispered as we smiled and waved to the couple. “Just watching the ducks.”

“Of course. What else would we be doing?” I said through my teeth. 

We chuckled as Cassie retrieved her phone from her leggings pocket.

“Oh, I have a missed call and voicemail from Beth,” she said as she held the phone to her ear. 

“We must’ve been distracted by watching the ducks,” I said. Cassie gave me a playful slap on the arm as she listened to her voicemail.

Out of nowhere, her face paled and her eyes grew wide. All the laughter and joy was gone, replaced by fear.

“Cassie, what’s wrong?” I demanded. 

“It’s Mark,” she said in a ghostly whisper. “He’s been bailed out of jail.”
