Eleven
The next morning, I scurried back and forth between drinking coffee and blow-drying my hair; we had to be at the farm at ten am. Picking up my phone, I speed-dialed a number and Sandra picked up on the second ring.
“Hey, girl, you walking funny yet?” she asked.
I laughed; leave it to Sandra to not have a filter. “Well, since I’ve been straddling a steel horse for almost a week, I should be walking funny,” I sassed her back. A bark of laughter came through the speaker. “I’m heading to the farm today. I just wanted to check with you and see it there was anything specific you wanted me to be looking for with these foals.”
“Not really, babe, the deal’s already been made, but check out the dames and bring me back the paperwork so I can file it here. Also, the trailer showed up last night, Brom called me to say it had gotten there fine. I ordered the bigger one in case you wanted to ride in the cab for a while. The driver and handler are Brom’s guys.”
“Thanks, Sandra, I’ll let Breech know. He’s waiting for me, so I’m going to run. But I will call you later and check in.”
“Take care, sugar tits,” she said and hung up, cutting off the sound of her own laughter. Shaking my head, I pocketed my phone, grabbed my bag, and headed downstairs to eat with Breech.
I found him in the hotel restaurant, seated at a table drinking coffee. I watched as the waitress stopped at the table, putting her hand on his shoulder while she asked if he wanted a refill on his almost-full cup. She pushed her ample chest out so it rested against his forearm, cocking her hip and giving him a show. He looked annoyed, so I figured I’d go rescue him.
Skipping up to the table, I stopped, twirling my hair around my finger and popping the gum in my mouth loudly. “Breech, Mom’s looking for you, she said she needs you to wash her back again; she can’t reach the spots you can with those long arms and nimble fingers of yours.”
He had just taken a sip of coffee, so my timing was perfect as he almost spit out the sip he had just taken. He started coughing and I took the liberty of pounding him on the back.
The waitress looked horrified and scurried away. I laughed at the comical expression on his face, falling into the seat across from him.
Thoughtfully he had the waitress fill my cup, so I added some creamer and took a fortifying sip. He was giving me the stink eye.
“What?” I asked, looking innocent. “You looked like you could use some rescuing, so I did.”
“Doll, she was just doing her job.”
“Yeah, with her tits in your face and practically sitting on your lap. I wonder what ‘job’ she was doing?”
He smiled. “Jealous much, Jiji?”
I slouched back in the chair, looking at him thoughtfully. Leaning forward, I wrapped both hands around the mug. The smell of the coffee, the clatter of silverware hitting plates, and the soft murmur of conversations from the restaurant faded in the background.
“Yeah, I guess you can say I was jealous. I certainly didn’t like the way she was hitting on you and I wanted to make her go away. You should be warned that I will not tolerate cheating on any level. I would rather you came out and told me up-front that you were interested in someone else than to go behind my back and screw some other chick. I would do you the same courtesy, because I couldn’t stand the guilt.”
He looked at me steadily then reached across the table and took one of my hands from the mug, holding it in between his big ones, warming me. Turning it upward towards the ceiling and making a cup, he said, “You hold my future right here in the palm of your hand. I know that you have trust issues and I understand that I have an unproven track record, but I promise you that I would never disrespect you that way.” He released my hand and I nodded my head at him.
“Thank you, Breech. I’ve been in that place and I don’t ever want to go back. It’s a dark, lonely place and I couldn’t stand the pain of a revisit.”
The waitress returned, sliding our plates in front of us, asking if we needed anything else. Breech shook his head no, so she slapped the check on the table and left without another word. I giggled but didn’t say anything as we ate our meal.
I told him about the phone call to Sandra and what she said about the trailer. “Are you tired of riding on the bike?” he asked.
Smiling, I answered, “No, not at all. I think Sandra was just trying to help me out in case I was having a problem, like flat-butt syndrome or an extreme case of thigh chafing.”
He tried to hide his smile, but he chuckled. “Okay, I got it, girl stuff.”
I continued, “This way it would look like I could use the horses as an excuse to ride in the truck. She’s a good wingman.”
“I’m glad you ladies are friends, and that she’s looking out for you.”
“Seriously, she’s the best person I can have at my back besides Tish.”
We chatted as we finished breakfast. Breech got up to pay the bill and I picked up my bag, ready to follow him, when I noticed my phone flashing. Pulling it out, I saw it was a text from Tish.
‘Just checking to see how your trip is going. If you need me, I’m just a text away. We should be back in town next week. I know your brother is going to want to see you.’
I texted her back, ‘Things are going gangbuster. Are you done playing hide the great googly moogly with my bro or do I have to shield my eyes every time I’m around you both?’
‘LOL,’ came zipping back. ‘Girl, your brother is hot, so I will always stare in awe of his hotness—so deal with it.’
Laughing, I texted back, ‘I told you never to mention his hotness or anything else in my presence. Since you broke the rules, make sure you bring me back something extra fantastic, or I will definitely talk about you behind your back to all our friends!’
‘LMAO, yeah you would. I’m on my way out to the shops to find you something fabulous that will make all our friends turn green with envy. Love your face, see you in a few days.’
‘Love you too Tish, tell my bro his little sis loves him to the moon and back.’
