Dark Killer: A Mafia Romance by Naomi West (26)

Chapter Twenty-Six

Enzo

When the sun was getting high enough that its light poured in through the skylight and made it impossible to sleep any longer, Enzo opened his eyes to find that the pillow next to him was empty. Madelyn had been there every time he had woken up and reached for her, ready to share their pleasure in each other’s bodies once again. Then they would drift off again with their arms around each other. But she had slipped out from between the sheets at some point, and he had been too comatose to notice.

Enzo jumped out of bed, alarmed that he might still have lost her after everything they had been through. But as he hurriedly pulled on a pair of sweatpants, he saw that her clothes and shoes were still on the floor where they had been thrown the night before. He smiled to himself, fished a small package out of his jacket pocket from the night before, and headed downstairs.

Peering in the kitchen, he found Madelyn standing in front of the coffee maker. She had found one of his button-up shirts and donned it in lieu of her own clothing, which let him know right away that she had no intention of leaving. The fine fabric came down just to her upper thigh, an attractive look when paired with her tousled dark locks hanging down the back. She stood with a steaming mug in her hand, looking distantly out the window.

“Getting a little fuel so you can come back to bed with me?” he teased.

She jumped at the sound of his voice, turning to him and laughing. “What can I say? I need my coffee, even on the weekends. You want a cup?” She turned back to the coffee pot.

Enzo came up behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her close. “What are we going to do with ourselves now that the trial is over and we don’t have ulterior motives to our business dinners?”

She laughed and leaned back against his body, her head on his shoulder. “I guess we’ll have regular dinners, and I’ll get a new client. I’m sure whoever it is won’t be as sexy and interesting as you, though.”

Enzo pressed his face against her hair. He had never held a woman who fit so perfectly in his arms. He had fought for her, and he wasn’t going to throw away the victory. He had thought about “I have a better idea.”

“What’s that?”

“Let’s get married.” Enzo let go of her and dropped to one knee just as she turned around. He pulled the box out of his pocket and opened it in front of her.

Madelyn turned around, laughing, thinking he was joking, but she pressed her hand to her chest at the sight of the ring. “When did you get that?” was the first thing out of her mouth.

Enzo smiled. “I bought it the day before the trial. I was determined not to lose you, no matter what happened with the trial. Madelyn, you’re the first woman who has ever made me feel anything besides lust. You’ve been so loyal to me, even when I didn’t give you much reason to be. I love you, and I need you by my side.”

Tears glistened in her eyes. “Oh Enzo …”

“The thing is, I’ve already told you all this before. When I brought you back here from Scarvo’s and you were asleep in my bed, I told you everything I felt for you. I couldn’t help myself, even though I knew you couldn’t hear it. And that’s how I knew we were meant for each other. Please, Madelyn. Will you marry me?”

But of course, she was a practical woman. He knew that, and he wasn’t surprised when she asked, “But what will it be like for me if I’m part of your family? Will I be expected to commit crimes?”

Enzo had thought about that, and he shook his head. “No. You’ll never have to do anything you don’t want to. I might ask for a lie or a small coverup, but your beautiful hands will never be dirtied. You can live like a queen, and you can work as much or as little as you want to. You can spend all my money, and I won’t care as long as I get to have you by my side.”

She was laughing and crying now. “With a proposal like that, how could I possibly say no? Yes, Enzo. I’ll marry you.”

He slipped the diamond on her finger and practically jumped to his feet to pull her into his arms once again. She relaxed against him, but then he felt her body stiffen as she pulled back and looked up at him.

“Do you want kids?” she asked solemnly.

“I would love them.”

She sank into him once again. “Good. Because we’re going to have our first one in about seven months.”

Enzo’s heart flooded with love and excitement. He held her at arm’s length and studied her face to make sure she wasn’t kidding. “What?”

“I’m pregnant, Enzo. I just found out for sure yesterday morning, but I wanted to find the right time to tell you. I guess we each had surprises for each other after the trial,” she said with a smile.

He kissed her, putting every ounce of what he was feeling into the gesture. Then he scooped her up into his arms and carried her back upstairs.
