“T hree more?” I asked the lovely woman as she handed me a stack of files .

Mary smiled. “Just three more. Then we are done for the day .”

Her statement lingered in the air as I looked down at the first file. “I might actually make it home before dark today .”

“You don’t have to you know,” she said softly .

I glanced up at her. “Excuse me?” I muttered. I had already started reading the files. The fact that she was even still there was a little surprising. It was strange .

“Some of the ladies and I were going to go out for a few drinks after work. It might be fun if you came along too .”

I set the file back down and grinned at Mary. She’d been here for about three months now, longer than any other temp. “I’m sorry, Mary, but I don’t think that’s going to work tonight. I have a surgery early tomorrow .”

Her face fell. “Well that’s just too bad. I’ve heard what a great dancer you are .”

She was flirting. The way her lip tugged into a pout when she said ‘dancer’ made me think it was something else altogether she was referencing. I wasn’t surprised one bit. My reputation as a surgeon was surpassed only by the one I kept in the bedroom. Woman loved me for more than just my skilled hands, though fingers like mine did help. Mary was cute and perky. Like many of the woman on my staff she put to use the fantastic employee discount that I offered. I’d turned her into an enchanting work of art, be it a hollow one .

She sat down carefully and looked at me as I took the seat next to her. The office had been designed to make my patients feel as comfortable as possible. “I can give you what you’re after,” I told her, trying to keep my comments to myself .

“This sort of thing isn’t covered by most insurance companies,” I said carefully .

She frowned. “I never even thought of that. I don’t have any insurance. I was hoping you would give me an idea of how much it was going to cost .”

“The surgery itself is six-thousand dollars. That doesn’t include the recommended aftercare that this facility offers .”

“Wow,” Tabitha said with a swallow. “Do you offer any kind of discounts ?”

“What kind would you be interested in?” I asked, slightly intrigued .

I shook my head. “Sorry, my staff is full and I don’t need any more help. You can always try shopping around for a better price, but I should warn you, there are a lot of doctors out there who will give you a good rate and bad work. You will be out more money in the long run when they put you in the hospital with an infection .”

“Wow, you really know how to sellout your fellow doctors .”

“I’m not selling them out, just telling the truth,” I told her honestly .

It didn’t do any good. She glared at me and stood up. “Well, thanks for nothing then .”

“You wanted pricing, and that’s what I have you .”

She was brash and forward, a wildcard that I wanted to know more about. Before I could let myself get sucked into chasing after her, Mary came in and asked if I was ready for my next appointment. Any attraction I had toward Tabitha was going to have to wait. Still, I had needs now that were burning through my loins .

“Yes,” I said after a moment. “And Mary? I think I will go out with you and the others tonight .”

“Really?” she said excitedly. “Awesome! Then let’s get this show on the road .”

“I couldn’t agree more,” I told her as she walked away .
