Hard Candy by Piper Kay (6)

Chapter 6

The intensity level with Trey flings off the damn charts, it was definitely the best sex I’ve ever had in my life. Trey was wonderful, and everything was perfect, but it’s suddenly turning strange as the heat of the moment has passed. During the act, the thought process was completely on ravage and release mode, but now reality is coming back, and quick.

For fucks sake he’s my boss. I just got completely naked and naughty with my boss and he still has no idea who I am. We were perfect together, and I don’t want to mess that up. I need to get out of here now before he realizes who I am and tries to figure out what to do about the whole thing.

Trey steps out on his balcony and lights a smoke, wearing nothing more than a robe and the curtains fall behind him, blocking the view. Now’s my chance. I’ve got to get out of here now quickly. All the emotions of ten minutes ago have faded and turned into the exact opposite and I’m a nervous wreck again. Scurrying around the room, I gather my clothes and quickly dress. I tiptoe over to the door, open it slowly, and creep out.

Freedom. I bolt down the hallway towards the staircase, practically doing a crooked grind skateboard move off the bannister with my shoes, to reach the bottom floor. Amanda spots me and quickly makes a break for me as I dash full speed ahead towards the front door. I feel like Cinderella running out of the ballroom.

“Ross, wait,” she yells behind me and follows. “What is wrong with you?”

“Please, no third-degree questions right now just get me out of here, quick.” I take long strides to get to her car.

Amanda climbs in the drivers’ side, turning to look at me as she starts the car. Could she take any longer? It seems like everything’s in slow motion right now and I need it to be in fast forward mode. We pull away from the curb and make a left at the light before I start feeling more comfortable about running out on Trey.

I take a deep breath. “Thank you,” I mumble and look out the window.

“What happened Ross? Why the big hurry to get out of there?” She taps on the gas pedal as we enter the onramp to the freeway.

“I just totally went into whore mode with him.” I take another deep breath.

“What? Oh my God, you did it? Woo hoo, you needed it.” She laughs.

“This isn’t funny Amanda. He’s our damn boss for Christ’s sake. One thing just kind of led to another and bam, we were naked. And technically no, we didn’t actually do it, but we did enough.” I raise my hand to my forehead and shake side to side, completely embarrassed.

“Seriously, so Mr. Suit gets a little freaky then?” She gives me a thumbs up and giggles about it.

“Oh shut up, seriously.” I slap her in her arm. “It was not like that.” Well it sort of was I guess.

“Mmm! Really now? Well, something happened, the way you ran out of there. Spill it.”

“Oh God, Amanda. I was just drawn in by the moment and not thinking clearly. Once it was over, Trey stepped outside to smoke and I bolted. Things will be fine as long as he doesn’t figure out it was really me.”

“Oh hell, you kept the little mask thing on, really? You kinky bitch you.” She starts laughing again.

“Stop, please. This could have turned into a damn nightmare. Can you imagine all of the tension this could cause at work behind this? It was great, but I’m so glad he’s new and doesn’t really know any of us yet.” I’m about to hyperventilate explaining all of this to her.

“What if he figures it out, Ross? That was pretty rude to run out without a word.” She turns into her driveway, shutting the car off.

“I know. If he catches on then I’ll deal with that when it happens. Honestly, even one of my closer friends at work barely recognized me, so Trey won’t catch on, will he? I’m just glad I let you play make-up and salon stylist on me.” I smile and reach across, giving her a goodbye hug. “I have to go.”

“You sure you don’t want to stay over for the night?” she asks and fumbles the key chain for her house key.

“No, I have to get home. I need to sort out the contracts tomorrow for work and I’m just going to veg out. You have a great Christmas day, hun. I love you.” I squeeze her tight again and get out of her car, running over to mine.

The front door closes behind me and I lock up behind myself. My shoes are the first thing to come off, followed by my outfit. I just want to crawl into my pajama pants and then climb in the bed, forgetting the entire thing. Okay, maybe not the whole thing, but…

My head’s a hot mess, a jumbled wreck. I don’t think I’ve ever been more excited and ashamed all at the same time. If I’m honest with myself, I enjoyed every minute of it and would do it ten times over. Where my problem lies is that I could have done this all along with one of the other seven billion people on earth, so why did I decide to go there with my boss? My damn boss. My head’s pounding. Ugh.

After last Christmas, I’ve kept to myself not even trying to be involved with anyone because the risk is too much to bear on the heart. I’m not the type of person to just jump in the sack with someone without a relationship being formed first, not typically, but tonight was just, well unique and spur of the moment, a heat of passion act.

The sweater from this evening rests across the side of the chair next to my bed. I reach over taking it and can smell Trey’s cologne on it. Curling it up against my skin, I inhale the left over aroma of musk and sandalwood. I snuggle in under the covers with his scent surrounding me and remember everything that happened just hours ago.

I drift off in a light sleep, the kind where you’re half awake and half asleep. The one that leaves you quaking with mini-dreams that startle you suddenly into a panic, but the kind you can’t wait to fall back asleep for, hoping it picks up where it left off. They were all about Trey.

The light peeks through the bedroom window waking me from the restless slumber of the night. I glance at the clock and it reads 9:00 a.m. Yawning, I climb out of bed, slide on my slippers and walk into the kitchen to make coffee.

I click on the TV, but every channel is nothing but Christmas parades, so I opt for the radio station instead. The phone rings. The caller id shows its Amanda.

“Hi honey.” I laugh.

“Merry Christmas. Were you awake?”

“Just woke up and waiting on the coffee right now.” I sniff and smell the aroma of coffee wafting through the air. “Merry Christmas to you too Amanda. What time are you heading over to your sisters?”

“I’m about to leave but wanted to call and invite you one more time. Last chance.” She laughs in the phone.

“No thanks, you have a great time though. Tell the family I said hello, but I have a ton of work to get done today. In fact I’m about to start on it as soon as the coffee is done cooking.” I stand and walk into the kitchen.

“You know coffee doesn’t cook, it perks, right?”

“Yes, you know what I mean. Anyway, I need to work today.”

“Work, work, work. Just make time to enjoy the rest of the day. It’s Christmas after all, you never know what might happen, being a magical holiday and all. Christmas surprises just sometimes show up at your door. Have fun.” What did she mean by that?

Click. She hangs up the phone. She’s in an awful chipper mood today, but Amanda’s one of those people who always stays happy and believes in the spirit of the holiday and holiday magic. Not me, my record has now taken two years of proving that.

My favorite mug is filled to the brim with coffee and I’m ready to take on the task at hand. I stroll over to the radio and crank the tunes before heading to the dining room. My folders are stacked neatly on the corner of the table with blueprints rolled up next to them. I sit down ready to tackle the job.

Bopping my head to the beat of the music, I pull my glasses from the case and slip them on. Not in the mood for my new contacts. I have a ton to sort through and have ready for when I return to the office after New Year’s.

With Trey being so new, I’ll have to go through these step by step to get him caught up with everything. That should prove to be very awkward for me and I’m not looking forward to it.

After scattering files all over my table and spreading out blueprints everywhere, even on the floor and looking them over, I get up to pour the last cup of coffee that is now several hours old. It’s right at noon and I’m still in my pajamas and look a mess.

As I walk back into the dining room, there’s a knock on my door. The only person who’d be coming here is Amanda, and that must mean that she and her brother-in-law got into it again. Crap.

“Coming.” I yell out to the door and walk towards it. God I hope she is okay.

Coffee cup in one hand and pencil in the other, I toss the pencil between my lips and turn the knob, opening the door.

“Merry Christmas.”

Oh my Godddddd!
