“Mataus!” Mo screamed from the bedroom. “Get your ass in here!”
Mataus dropped his brush in the turpentine and rushed inside. “Is it time?” he said as he rounded the doorway.
Mo gripped her stomach and took a deep breath in and then out. “Damn straight. Five minutes apart. Get Shannon up here from the barn to watch Grace and Charlie, we gotta go!”
“Why did you wait so long?”
“I didn’t wait, Layla decided she was in a hurry. You know Charlie came fast and he was our first. Second babies usually come faster.”
“Well, hell.”
“Grab the bag and call the hospital, we need to go.”
“Got it.” Mataus followed his waddling wife out to the car, suitcase in one hand and cell phone in the other. He dialed the doctor as he walked. Grace came running to meet them. “Is my sister coming?”
“Yes, baby she is. Can you run out to the barn and tell Shannon?”
“Yep, I’ll tell her.”
“Is your brother still sleeping?”
“Yeah.”
“Okay. You be a good girl for Shannon. Aunt Harley will be over later to take care of you.”
“All right. Can I come to the hospital and see the baby?”
“Of course you can. Later, after Mommy is feeling better.”
“’Kay.” Grace gave her a kiss and ran toward the barn.
Mataus loaded her into the car and steered for the hospital. It was the longest twenty-minute drive of his life. Mo did her breathing exercises in the seat next to him and breathed along, trying to be a good coach, drive and calm himself at the same time.
By the time they reached the hospital Mo’s contractions were two-minutes apart and she was fully dilated. They took her straight to a birthing room. Fifteen minutes after they arrived Mo was pushing and Layla made her entrance into the world.
Mataus got to cut the cord and he laid Layla on Cara’s chest, kissing her tear stained cheek. “Look what we did, cher. Isn’t she beautiful?”
Choked with emotion, Mo croaked, “She’s a miracle.”
“Sometimes the doctors are wrong,” he said caressing her cheek.
She blinked the tears from her eyes. “Sometimes love is stronger than science.”
“Are you saying you finally believe in magic?”
“I believe in you.”
