Signs of Innocence (Soul of the Sinner - Book 4) by Rumer Raines (6)

Hannah

Thomas and I manage to avoid each other the next morning. He slipped out of bed before I woke up and I was thankful that he did. I didn’t even take my uniform completely off before I let him fuck me. I can’t even say he did anything other than fuck me. I was fucked by a killer. I don’t even know how I will be able to look at myself again…ever. I take a deep breath before getting out of bed and stare at my uniform, which Stan ripped while attacking me.

I have another uniform at home, I’ll just go pick it up before work. I feel like I am taking the walk of shame as I walk downstairs and find Thomas in the kitchen. He turns around when he hears me and despite last night, his eyes are still cold and hard. His eyes lift when I tell him that I need to leave so I can go home to grab another uniform. I don’t have to be at the diner until this afternoon, but that’s none of his business.

“Don’t you normally work until close?” Thomas questions and I swallowed hard, lifted my chin, and boldly met his gaze. I can’t believe this bastard knows my work schedule.

“I thought I would swing by the diner this morning to check on the girls.” I answered in a rush of words. Thomas rolls his eyes and tosses his glass into the sink so hard it sounds like it shattered

“You don’t think that would look suspicious? You know they will think Stan is missing, you’re just going to show up to do what exactly?” there was a critical tone to his voice. He tilts his head and I don’t know how to answer the question, but I don’t think I need to answer them.

“I guess I don’t know. You’re the professional killer, how do I make myself look innocent?” I can’t hide the bitterness in my voice.

Thomas stiffened as though I struck him and when he is close enough he puts his hand around my neck. Is he going to kill me now? His dark eyes are distant, and I get a chill from the coldness in them. What Thomas doesn’t realize is that I am past the point of caring. My life sucks and I have nothing to live for. Maybe I shouldn’t have ran the first time I seen him kill in the alley. Maybe I should have walked towards the danger, instead of run from it.

“Why do you keep testing me Hannah?” His lips puckered with annoyance

“Do me a favor Thomas…When you kill me do it quickly, just like you did with the others.”

“You ready to die Hannah?” Thomas whispers as he pulls me closer and I lift on my toes to meet his eyes

“Yes” … I reply, and he opens his mouth to respond when his cell phone rings. Thomas closes his eyes and reaches into his back pocket. His eyes stay on mine when he answers, and he doesn’t say enough for me to know what he’s talking about, until he mentions that he can’t come in today. I just hope he isn’t planning to watch me all day. Thomas releases me when he hangs up and walks away from me. He stares at me from across the room with narrowed eyes and I stare back at him.

“I’ll take you home to pick up your uniform and we’ll swing by the diner. If there are cops there, we won’t stop.” The corner of his mouth twisted with exasperation and I walked away rolling my eyes

I felt ashamed when Thomas walked into my place. I don’t have much, but I have worked my ass off to get it. Thomas huffed and glanced around like my place wasn’t good enough for him to even be in. My home is a large room with a sofa I got off the curb, a kitchen table with two wooden chairs and a bed that is under the window. The carpet is a dirty black swag and neither of the three cabinets in the kitchen even have doors. I have one small closet that fits every piece of clothing I own. When I ask Thomas if he wants to sit down, he stared down at my sofa and shook his head. I asked him if he wanted to look at tv and his eyes lifted and looked around the room.

I pointed to my small nineteen-inch television that sat on the stack of books that I used as a television stand. Thomas looks between me and television before walking over and sitting at my kitchen table as I worried that he’ll break one of only my two chairs.

“Tell me about yourself.” Thomas whispers and I think I misheard him

“Excuse me?” I replied as I felt impaled by his steady gaze

“I said tell me about yourself. How did you end up here?”

“End up here? Am I beneath you?” The tension between us increased with frightening intensity

“You were only beneath me last night Hannah. I want to know how you ended up living here.” He gave me a narrowed glinting glance

“You know where I work, I am not pulling in the big bucks.” I remind him, and he nods

“I understand that, but this doesn’t make any sense. Tell me how you ended up here.” His voice was carefully colored in neutral shades

“You don’t need to know anything about me.” I tell him and grab a new uniform and head to the bathroom to shower and get dressed. I throw my blood covered uniform into the hamper and take a deep breathe before having to deal with Thomas. When we finally arrive to the diner, there are cops all over the place. There is yellow police tape surrounding the front door of the diner and I see Nikki standing outside crying.

Before Thomas gets a chance to stop me, I hop out of the car and I run over to Nikki giving her a big hug. She cries as she tells me that something happened to Stan. I stare at the cops walking in and out of the diner and wonder what the hell they could be doing? I know Thomas got rid of Stan and I cleaned up all the blood. Did I miss a spot? A few customers come over and give Nikki hugs as she tells them what she told me, and I notice Thomas who is now at my side. Nikki stops talking and looks him over as the customers walk away shaking their heads.

“What’s going on?” he questions, and Nikki can barely answer as she practically gropes him with her eyes

“Something bad has happened to Stan.” Nikki tells him as she starts to play with her hair. She must not be that concerned with Stan since she can flirt with Thomas.

“Why do you think that?” Thomas asks, and I smirk when he doesn’t notice her flirting

“The front door was open when I got here and there was blood all over the floor. They even found blood inside Stan’s car, but they haven’t found him yet.” Nikki advises, and my eyes meet Thomas’

I know there wasn’t blood all over the floor when we left. I also know the front door wasn’t open. Nikki excuses herself to go talk to another group and I turn towards Thomas.

“What the hell is going on?” I whisper, and his eyes focus on the cops that are flowing in and out of the Pink Cup.

“Someone seen us.” He tells me, and my chest tightens with fear. Thomas grabs my arm as a police officer approaches us. He pulls me close telling me not to look back and we keep walking until were back at his car. I stare out the window as the detective stares at me and we pull off.
