Signs of Innocence (Soul of the Sinner - Book 4) by Rumer Raines (7)

Thomas

I have left another witness. Not only did I have another witness, but they are setting me up to be caught. I got rid of Stan’s body, Hannah got rid of all the blood and someone planted shit at the crime scene. I know the cops will test do a DNA test on the blood to find out who’s it is, but they will investigate everything that happened in the diner last night. They’ll want to talk to Hannah and I think she’ll crack and tell them everything.

I drive straight to Deluca’s and park in the ally. When I walk over to the passenger side to open the door for Hannah, she is reluctant to get out. We walk into the dark bar and I glance towards the office to see the lights are on in Frank’s office. I pull out a stool for Hannah to sit, but when I see the look on her face I am wondering if I can trust her to stay put while I find someone to discuss this shit with.

“Thomas… Who is this?” Oliver asks, and I turn to see him approaching and I release the breath that I was holding when I see him. Oliver is going to be pissed, but I would rather discuss this shit with him than either Deluca.

Hannah’s eyes widen as Oliver stands between us and I narrow mine on her. Does she like what she sees when looking at him? More importantly why do I even care? Hannah is a witness, not my woman. She obviously can feel me looking at her and she turns her attention back to me and glances away as Oliver chuckles. I pull him aside and tell him about literally saving Hannah’s ass last night. I tell him how I had to once again kill someone and she’s a witness. Oliver starts to look suspicious when I tell him that this morning the diner was covered in blood and cops were investigating. He comes to the same conclusion, that someone is trying to set me up.

Oliver suggest that I get out of town for a few days until everything dies down and tells me that I need to take Hannah with me. I can’t leave her behind since we can’t trust her. Hannah walks over and stands between us advising that she wants to be involved if were talking about her. Oliver looks at her and back towards me.

“Do you think you can deal with her for a few days?” Oliver’s tone was coolly disapproving and Hannah gasps

“I don’t need to be dealt with. I would like to be dropped off at home and forgotten about. I already told Thomas that I won’t talk. If he doesn’t believe that I gave him the opportunity to kill me.” She tells Oliver and I close my eyes as my head falls back staring at the ceiling. What the hell is wrong with this woman?

I can feel Oliver’s eyes on me and I refuse to look at him, glancing at Hannah instead. Oliver tells me to get out of town for a few days and he’ll see what he can find out here. I can hear the suspicion in his voice. I can assume he is thinking I have lost it, and I think I may have. I take Hannah by the arm and pull her out of Deluca’s and head for the safe house.

Hannah complains during most of the drive up and pouts the remaining time. She doesn’t want to leave town with me. She needs to go back to the diner. She hates me and wishes she would have called the cops, since I would be in jail and she wouldn’t be taken hostage. I turn up the radio to drown her out and she throws her arms across her chest, which I guess is a small temper tantrum? I just hope that Oliver figures this out who is setting me up, so I can get home as soon as possible.

I was almost lost in my own thoughts when the red and blue lights along with siren pulled behind me. Hannah turns in her seat to look behind and I pull off the road. Please let this damn cop drive by and not pull off the road with me. I am not that lucky, and he pulls behind me as the cop from the diner get out of the passenger seat. I lower my window, but he walks over to the passenger side and smiles at Hannah.

“Where are you headed darling?” the cop asks in a low, composed voice

“Were just going out of town for a few days.” Hannah answers and my head hits the headrest

“Out of town huh? This is funny timing isn’t it? We’re investing a possible murder at the diner, your boss is missing and your headed out of town with a dangerous mob member?” he comments, and Hannah shrugs her shoulder

“I think the timing is good actually. I was so upset about something possibly happening to Stan that Thomas thought he would take me away for a few days. He’s not dangerous to me at all.” She chose her words carefully

“I don’t think it’s good timing at all. As a matter of fact, I think I’m going to need you to come with me Ms. Cofe.” he replies as he opens the door and grabs her by the arm pulling her from the car. Hannah protest as he tugs her towards the police car. Before I can stop him, the other officer pushes me against my car and puts handcuffs on me.

“What the hell are you arresting me for?” I ask, and he says he is arresting me for suspicion of murder

Hannah and I are sitting in the backseat of the police car and I can feel her trembling next to me. I yell at the officer that this must be breaking the law and he tells me to shut up. Hannah stares out the window and when she glances back at me I see the tears in her eyes. It’s a long ride to the fucking police station and I whisper to her not to talk.

The minute we enter the station I start yelling for my lawyer as they hustle me into the interrogation room. They took Hannah in another direction, but I can assume it’s a different interrogation room. I have a gut feeling the minute she is questioned, she’ll talk. I stare at the empty hard concrete walls and laugh that I don’t come here more often. The cops would always threaten to bring me in, but they never had enough to question me. It makes me nervous realizing that this time, they must have enough.

“How about you start off telling me exactly what happened last night?” Detective Howard asks as looks over his coke bottle glasses at me

“That’s kind of private isn’t it?” I tease as he narrows his eyes on me

“Nothing is private while you’re here.”

“Ok… I bent her over and rammed my hard…” I comment, and he slams his hand down on the table

“I want to know why you killed him! If you confess now, it will be better for you. We’re going to talk to Hannah and if she tells us before you do, it won’t be good. One of you will get a deal, If I were you I would take it.” Howard assures me, and I laugh at him

“When exactly is my lawyer arriving? You did call him correct? He’ll be pissed if he knows you questioned me in his absence; Not to mention you didn’t even give me my Miranda rights, which is a big no-no” I remind him, and he stands and leaves the room

I drop my head to the table thinking about Hannah. Is she talking to them? She promised she wouldn’t go to the cops, in her mind she’s probably thinking she didn’t go to them. I am fucked, and I don’t know how I’ll get out of this situation. Someone is setting me up for a murder that I did commit. When I get out of here, I will find them and make them pay.
