Too Close To Break: Loving, Book 3 by M.A. Innes (9)

Kevin

We ended up using the self-checkout aisle. I didn’t trust him at all.

“Are you sure you want all that? I think you’re the one who’s going to end up making himself sick.” Jeremy laughed, but I wasn’t exactly teasing.

My frugal count-every-penny husband had bought a couple of little mini-desserts and a carton of ice cream. I might have gotten a big-ass piece of chocolate cake, but his looked like a lot more food. I think part of it was to distract me and the rest was just to drive me crazy.

“It’s not that much. See?” He held up the carton. “It’s one of the small ones and the other stuff is tiny, like a mouthful each.”

“Okay, but don’t complain if you end up with a stomachache.”

“You had more dinner than I did. That kid ate half my steak.” He might have had a point. Not that I was going to say that.

I mumbled something about round and tall just as we were getting in line behind an older woman who was buying some more reasonable groceries. She didn’t look like a junkie on a sugar binge like we probably did. Jeremy gave me a disgruntled look to let me know he’d heard me—of course he did; that was the point—but thankfully stayed quiet.

Not for long enough though.

“There he is…your hot bagger.” He leaned close and whispered low.

“He’s not mine, and I didn’t even notice his looks.” Liar. “You’re going to get us kicked out.”

“Eye candy and pastries…I told you so.” He smirked, and either the little old lady in front of us had bionic hearing, or her hearing aid was turned up way too loud, because she turned and gave us both a grin.

“That’s why everyone shops here. No one really needs half the stuff in here, but every bagger and stock boy is cute. So we overpay.” Then she pointed at Jeremy as she grabbed her bag. “Driving him crazy just because he’s so cute when he gets worked up? My Herold used to do that to me, God rest his soul. He was a handful too.”

She gave us a wave as she walked out the door. I was still having a hard time picking my jaw up off the floor. Jeremy, on the other hand, thought it was great. He was laughing so hard I had to check us out. Everyone at the front of the store was looking at us and clearly wanted to know what she’d said that was so funny.

I almost dragged him out of there.

He managed to help me bag up the ice cream, but then he leaned over and started to whisper again. “He looked at your ass.”

“He did not!” That might have come out too loud.

Ripping the receipt from the machine, I grabbed his hand and started heading out the door. I just couldn’t take him anywhere today. Jeremy grinned and kept making little comments. That lady was right; he was doing it on purpose.

As we made it to the car, Jeremy took the bag I was carrying from my hand and proceeded to put it in the car carefully with the other one. He clearly didn’t trust me not to hit him with the cake while he drove. Probably a good decision.

“You can’t—”

“But I can.” Jeremy pulled me close and then turned and sandwiched me between his body and the car. His voice came out low and husky. “Because you love me. Wasn’t that what you said earlier?”

Damn it.

He took my mouth in a hot, steamy kiss that made my knees weak. His tongue stroking mine and his teeth pulling at my lower lip. When I was so turned on I was nearly humping his leg, he pulled back. “And because you’re mine. So it doesn’t matter if you flirted with the guy or if you even got a thrill that he thought your ass was hot. You’re mine.”

“Forever.” I stretched up and gave him a kiss. “But I was not flirting with him.”

Maybe just a little. But not as bad as he was saying.

“Well, he knows you’re taken now, so it doesn’t matter.” Jeremy’s grin was wicked.

“Huh?”

He tilted his head back toward the store. The bagger was standing by the empty cars just watching us. I wasn’t sure if he looked jealous or hungry. He’d definitely noticed us though. We were never going to be able to go back. No more yummy chocolate mile-high cake with coconut on top for me—or whatever it was called.

“I told you so. But he can’t have you.”

Jealous, slightly insane Jeremy was fun. But high maintenance. I was going to need a nap or just an early bedtime. “You are crazy…but I’m yours, crazy man.”

He smiled, both wicked and tender, and kissed me again. Pulling away, he gave me a sweet smile. “I love you.”

“I love you too.” He was so funny and I loved him dearly but…“But the ice cream is going to melt if we don’t get home.”

Laughing, he gave me a quick peck and stepped back from me so I could move. “Then stop distracting me so we can get home. I think I was promised dessert in bed.”

I might have sighed dramatically.

By the time we were back at the apartment, we were both more relaxed. He’d stopped teasing, and I’d just cuddled against him in the car. We started talking about random things but nothing important. It was clear he just wanted to keep my mind distracted and away from everything that had happened recently. The way he’d tried to distract me and keep me laughing was cute, but I knew the real world would come back, eventually.

I’d just thought we’d have the rest of the evening first.

Evidently not.

The horde of girls descended on us as we got ready to get on the elevator. They had suitcases and boxes, so I was assuming that meant they were leaving for the summer, but with girls, I couldn’t always tell.

They seemed to walk around with enough stuff to move to Mars on a regular basis. Jeremy said they were the gender you wanted to surround yourself with if the zombies invaded because those purses probably carried around enough stuff to MacGyver a tank or something.

Samantha and Juliet, the giggling ones, had a thousand small little bags and started shouting at us excitedly. It took me a minute to figure out what they were saying. Evidently, they were really excited about going home. I got pieces of what they were going to do, but after the third mention of a vacation and weird things, I started tuning them out.

I thought we’d managed a clean getaway as they started flocking toward the cars, but they’d really just been the distraction from the main drama.

Porno-pizza-guy.

He was the last person to get off the elevator, and he’d obviously been pressed into service because he was carrying boxes too. I got another icky smile, and he tried to look cool, but that wasn’t really possible carrying boxes. “Hey, look who’s here. Stopped by to see if you had the notes from today but you weren’t home. Think I can grab those from you? There’s a few things I might have missed. I was a little distracted.”

Eww.

If the idea was to hint he was so distracted by me that he needed my notes, the idea was gross. I might not have been as blunt as Jeremy would have been, but that wasn’t because I couldn’t stand up for myself. In the beginning, I just hadn’t noticed and didn’t realize he was flirting. Most of the time it was girls who asked me out or at least started to. Other guys left me pretty much alone.

“Um, we didn’t take that many today. You should be fine.” Nearly dragging an almost growling Jeremy into the elevator as it started to close, I thought we were home free.

Nope.

Seventies-porno-guy just stuck his foot out and tripped the sensors before it closed, causing the door to open again. “How about I come by after I’m done, and we can go over the questions for that test later this week?”

Fuck.

Jeremy finally gave up trying to behave. “We’ve got plans. I think you should find someone else to study with. My husband is busy.”

Then Jeremy hit the button to start closing the door. “Excuse us.”

Pizza-guy gave him a weird smirk and stepped back, letting the door close. I just wasn’t sure what was going on with him. I was not all that. “He’s—”

“An ass.”

“Yup.” Leaning against Jeremy’s shoulder, I smiled. “You’re so sexy when you tell off people so politely.”

He laughed. “So, what would you have done if I’d punched him or something?”

“Defending me from the bad pick-up lines?” I grinned when he nodded. “I wouldn’t have been able to keep my hands off you.”

Jeremy’s smile turned wicked again, and he started inching toward me. Whatever he’d planned was put on hold when the elevator door opened. I walked out tugging him with me. “I’m not getting caught making out with you in the elevator.”

Laughing, he let me pull him to our apartment, but he wasn’t moving fast enough. I started digging out my keys and trying to get him to hurry. “Come on before they get the bright idea to have one last kegger or something and try to make us go with them.”

“You’re just dragging me in there and are going to have your way with me.”

I looked over my shoulder as I unlocked the door. “Feeling like a heroine from a romance novel or something are we?”

He let me open the door, but as soon as we were in the house he tugged me to him, the bags getting all shoved around. “Hey, my cake!”

“If I’m the heroine, does that make you the hero of the story? Are you going to seduce me and make me yours? Isn’t that how those stories end?” I wasn’t sure if he was hinting at something or not, but the image had me fighting not to blush.

I was a demanding and slightly toppy bottom, but actual topping made me nervous. He grinned when he saw my face, pulling me even closer to kiss me. He started whispering crazy naughty things between kisses, and if it hadn’t been for the groceries, I’m not sure we would have made it past the front door.

When he started to drop the bag he was holding, he seemed to remember the food and pulled back. “Kitchen, then bedroom.”

Since I was in complete agreement, I nodded and headed over to put the bag on the counter. The cake would be fine and that meant I could get naked even faster. I nearly tripped over my own feet as I headed into the bedroom. Jeremy’s laughter made shivers run down my spine, but it wasn’t mean. I could hear that he liked how excited I was—how turned on I was.

Stripping off my clothes in record time, I was naked and climbing onto the bed as he walked in. I might have given my ass a little shake, just in case he needed the hint I wasn’t in the mood to top. Not that I thought he wanted to bottom. He’d been entirely too feisty, and aggressive might not be the right word, but it was the closest thing I had.

He was in the mood to drive me nuts, not let me control a damned thing—which suited me fine. When Jeremy acted that way, it usually meant crazy things in bed. Total lose-my-mind sex, because he’d perfected the art of making me lose my mind. Practice makes perfect.

He was perfect.

“Just like that, on your hands and knees.” His voice was deep and needy, dripping with sex. Earlier, he’d focused everything on keeping me distracted and teasing me, but now all that intensity was aimed at something different. Just thinking about it made me shake and a little moan escaped.

I liked being on display for him.

“Should I get the gag out? Are you going to be loud and needy, or do you think you can be good?” Both options sounded fabulously dirty the way he said them.

Fuck.

I didn’t know what to say. There was no way I could promise to be quiet, but I wasn’t sure what the game was. Was I supposed to try and then get punished for being naughty? Did he actually want me to be silent, or did he just want an excuse to use the gag?

And this was why I didn’t like to top. Too many fuckin’ decisions.

I knelt there on all fours, trying to figure out what to say. I could hear him crossing the room, but I didn’t look. I closed my eyes and listened to the sounds of his clothes coming off and waiting to see what he would do. At the very least, I’d been naughty since I hadn’t answered the question.

The images flashing through my head made my dick ache and precum drip down onto the bed. I’d expected him to start by teasing me or by punishing me or even just ignoring me completely since I was bad.

Grabbing my cock wasn’t what I thought would happen first.

He reached through my legs and took hold of my erection in a grip that was just the sexy side of painful. I couldn’t move or it would actually hurt, but having his fingers around me felt incredible. The mixed signals went right to my head and shut down every higher function.

All I could do was gasp as a moan threatened to escape.

“You didn’t answer me.”

What?

He must have realized I wasn’t following anymore. “Open your eyes and look at me, Baby.”

Jeremy’s voice was firm and there was an underlying threat that made me shiver again. Damn, I loved it when he got like that. Hearing him was sexy; actually obeying him was a lot harder. My eyes didn’t want to move. All I wanted to do was arch my ass up and beg him to take me. Seeing wasn’t required for that.

He had other plans though.
