Winter Heat, Summer Baby (A Nonshifter Omegaverse Story) by Pernilla Oswick (17)

Chapter 19

Logan

It was easy to live with Sebastian, once Logan got used to the idea that he was allowed to have this. Sebastian was loud and opinionated and totally shitty at cooking everything except pancakes, but if Logan was going to be bothered by that, he'd have stopped being in love with the guy years ago. He was totally down for staring lovingly at Sebastian while Sebastian swore at whatever he was doing on his laptop: he just couldn't get used to the fact that he was allowed to look instead of constantly hiding his adoration behind his phone every time Sebastian looked like he might lift his head.

Fortunately, Sebastian had always been a little single-minded when he was on track to get something he wanted. In this case, it was to finish his project and get out of this town. He'd stopped complaining about how far away that prospect seemed once he moved in with Logan, though from the way he bent over his laptop with furious concentration, the idea hadn't left his mind.

Logan had been idly researching where they could go since before he knew that Sebastian would allow him to come along, and now he had a thousand folders of information at the ready, just waiting for Sebastian to ask. Despite Sebastian's apparent lack of interest in the details, Logan had found himself searching through rental listings and falling in love with quiet tree-lined streets and good school districts. His favorite realtor was one who always seemed to have the best pictures, and he was flicking through their site now, picturing himself and Sebastian making breakfast in that sunny kitchen, or curled up together in that tiny, cozy bedroom. Maybe too tiny.

"Hey." He poked Sebastian gently with his toe. "What's your opinion on nurseries?"

"What?" Sebastian swiveled his head around to stare at Logan, perplexed.

"Like, nurseries? Versus co-sleeping." Logan shut his mouth quickly to prevent himself from spilling out all his research in one big lump. He didn't really have an opinion yet – even the thought of holding his own child charmed and terrified him in equal measures – but he definitely had a lot of other people's opinions all saved up to repeat.

"I mean, there isn't really space in here?" Sebastian said, sounding confused that the question was even being raised. "We're going to have to put the crib in the bedroom. My aunt said I could borrow one off her, by the way." He paused, eyebrows wrinkling. "That is, if she's still talking to me after everything."

"You want me to call her?" Logan said, patting Sebastian's knee with his foot. "I can pull the whole responsible fiancé bit and charm her socks off."

Sebastian laughed unwillingly. "Hah. As if my mother hasn't told her everything about how disappointed she is in us already."

"I don't know..." Logan sat up to try and reach for Sebastian's hand. "I think she might just be saving that for your repeated refusals to pick a wedding date. If she's still trying to get you to make it official, she's probably not telling anyone that it isn't yet."

"Maybe," Sebastian allowed, scowling. "Whatever." He turned back to his computer. "If you want to make yourself the designated intermediary with my stupid family, be my guest."

Which was sort of useful, given how awful Logan felt every time he had to listen to Sebastian muttering into the phone, curled around it as though he could muffle the lecture pumping through the speakers with his own body. He'd love a chance to help with that. On the other hand, it didn't really answer Logan's original question, so he couldn't figure out if they needed to rent a place with a second room that could be easily made into a nursery, or if they could save that for their first house – another category he had bookmarked and kept coming back to whenever he had a free moment to daydream.

"Okay, but–" Logan started.

Sebastian sighed. "I really need to finish this, Logan. Is it super important?"

"Sorry," Logan said, pulling up a smile for Sebastian's unseeing benefit and patting Sebastian's arm. "Didn't mean to interrupt." He lay back, looking through the realtor's pictures with a determined expression. He was just going to have to make sure they had a wide variety of listings to assess when Sebastian had more time to look at them. It was okay. He could make that happen

Over the next few weeks, Sebastian did keep his promise to hand dealing with his family off to Logan, shoving the phone in his face with smug satisfaction and making him answer it in his best customer service voice. It was a little annoying, but mostly because he felt bad about how much easier it clearly was for him than for Sebastian. He didn't know why Sebastian's mother thought that he couldn't tell when she was trying to hide her annoyance – she'd out-and-out yelled at the two of them many times over the years, often for perfectly justified reasons, though their judgment had improved since they were ten and hiding frogs in the bathroom – but he was perfectly willing to ignore it.

She could grit her teeth all she wanted as she told him that she would really appreciate if she could speak to Sebastian as she had something important to ask him, and she could sigh as much as she liked when he cheerfully offered to pass a message along, but Logan could just pretend he wasn't aware of any of it except her exact words. Which probably only remained polite because she still harbored this bizarre conviction that Logan might flee into the distance at any moment unless there was a legal contract tying him and Sebastian together, but Logan was perfectly willing to take advantage of that. He was less pleased to think that that was probably exactly where Sebastian had gotten the idea that Logan wouldn't care that they were going to have a child together, but there was much less he could do about that, except to keep trying to look after Sebastian, despite Sebastian's reluctance to look after himself.

It only got worse as Sebastian got closer and closer to his deadline. Everything was going to be fine, Logan was certain of that, but Sebastian wanted it to be perfect, and there seemed to be nothing that Logan could do except to let him run headlong at his target. He did, after Sebastian had been gone for several different five or six-hour group meetings, contemplate calling Sebastian's group members and letting them know that Sebastian was in a delicate condition, but only as a passing fantasy. He preferred Sebastian to still be speaking to him, which he definitely wouldn't be after that kind of interference.

On the other hand, calling Sebastian's parents to remind them of the date and time of Sebastian's graduation seemed like a natural extension of Logan's role as liaison. There was still a month or so to go, but Sebastian was so busy with his final week of projects and exams, and the school kept telling them to reserve tickets soon, so Logan decided he could probably get away with it.

He knew he was justifying it to himself. He could justify a lot if he thought it might make Sebastian happy.
