Over the next few days James and Becky explored the countryside, learning the place and each other well. James could sense the other wolf but the creature never came close enough to be a danger. He knew it was male, and bound to have black hair, but that was all. The presence of the other wolf kept James secretly on edge. He knew he could protect her if it came back, but was made nervous at the thought.
They spent the days exploring the countryside while they spent the nights exploring each other. Becky had been preparing for the night to come, getting tea ready and washing up as well as best she could with her limited resources. James had brought up extra water, and she was making full use of it. She rinsed the buckets, and fear struck as she heard a growl behind her.
Turning, she quickly ran for the car, always unlocked now, and made it inside just as the creature pounced on the hood. It growled but did not move, settling on the hood instead to watch her. It was waiting her out, Becky thought, waiting until she had to come out then it was going to pounce. She noticed its eyes were green, a familiar green that she could not place. Looking closer she spoke as she realized who the shifter was.
“Dr. Kade? What the hell?” She hit the dashboard of the car, angry beyond words now. The animal growled deeper, a malicious hatred shining in its eyes. Snarling it jumped from the hood, as if something had caught its attention. She realized it was James, and screamed as the creature launched itself at the man she’d come to care so deeply for in such a short time. The last few days had been filled with wonder for Becky, a time of great joy, and a happiness unlike any she had known before. Now this creature was here to try and take it from her, and she was simply not going to have it!
She picked up a piece of wood as the creature attacked James, forcing him from his bike, which landed on top of him. Becky screamed watching as James’s head bounced against a rock. “I think the bad wolf is Dr. Kade, he’s over there now. I’m not sure if I killed him or not,” Becky gasped as she looked over to see the wolf had shifted back to its human form and it was Dr. Kade. He was also awake, moving slowly to the couple.
“You two! You’ve destroyed everything!” The man moaned out to them.
“What are you talking about? You sent me here!” Becky replied back, anger spitting from her voice.
“Yes, for myself! Your mother promised you to me back when I was a drug dealer in college, she swore I could have you in payment, and I’ve waited all of these years to collect on that debt. Then you come up here with this mongrel! You both have to pay now!”
Dr. Kade picked himself up and darted over to James, who quickly shifted and attacked as a wolf himself. The fight didn’t last long, James quickly had the doctor pinned beneath him, the black creature’s throat in his jaws. The men growled and spitted, and Dr. Kade swiped at James with a long claw, hoping to disembowel him. Becky was in shock, and amazed as Dr. Kade’s body disintegrated into dust that blew away on the wind.
“Is that going to happen to you?” was all she could think to say as James shifted back to human form, running to her to embrace her in a tight hug. “I don’t know how I’m going to go back to work now. There will be inquiries, questions.”
“Shh, darling, don’t worry over any of that," James soothed her. "You’ll never have to work again now. Unless you want to of course. That’s up to you, but you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to ever again.”
“But I worked hard for it all--" she started as James interrupted her.
“I know you did but now, you need time to relax darling, you need room to think, room to heal. You can’t do that there. Come with me, I’ll take you to my house. It’s warm and cosy and I’ll build us a fire.”
“That actually sounds very good. Yes, please," she whimpered.
He wrapped her in his arms and carried her to his bike, helping her to get on as he drove them into the night, to his house, his own refuge.
Two weeks had passed, and they’d moved all of Becky’s belongings into James’s house. She’d worked her two weeks notice at work while avoiding questions and inquiries, and they were both happily ensconced in the new bed James had had ordered.
