His Mate - Brothers - S-witch-eroo by M. L Briers (18)

~

Mel was prying all of the information on the elders illness that she could from Grayson. Not that it was an easy task, the man liked to use grunts in place of words a lot, and she was left with something akin to an interrogation rather than a conversation.

“What the…?” Grayson leant forward in his seat and scrutinised the view in the side mirror. A big smirk of a smile stretched across his handsome face, and the rumble of laughter started in his chest. “Hold on; I have to get this on video.”

The next moment; he pulled into the oncoming lane, hit the brakes, waited for Paige’s car to drive by, and dropped in behind it.

“Oh, wow,” Mel chuckled into the palms of her hands at the sight of the big shifter chasing down the road after her sister’s car.

“Here’s my phone, could you please, please film it?” He chuckled as he handed her the mobile, and Mel went to work catching the moment for prosperity. “That’s just classic.”

“I have to wonder how she got him out of the car in the first place — but, who cares — that’s just too funny,” Mel chuckled.

“My brother — the genius,” Grayson chuckled. Then he hit the down button on the window and thrust his head out. “Could you go a little faster, brother. You’re slowing me down,” he called.

Even Mel could hear the growling and curse words that came from Dusty’s lips as the big shifter tossed a dark glare back over his shoulder, but he didn’t stop running.

“Do you have it on video because the rest of the pack are going to wanna see this?”

“You’re cruel, mean, and heartless,” Mel tossed back on a chuckle. “I like it.”

“Actually, I may or may not be all of those things, but I consider this a public service for the rest of the pack, and the unmated males, on what not to do when wooing your mate.”

“Never trust a witch?”

“Exactly!” Grayson answered the question before he’d put his brain in gear.

Then he grimaced, close his eyes for a second, and bit down on a curse. He’d walked right into that one.

“Interesting,” Mel said, and he waited for the sting of her magic or the biting words from her lips, but neither came.

“Actually — never trust a woman,” Grayson spoke again before he’d considered that he was burying himself in stupidity.

“Hmm.”

“What I mean is…” He grimaced again.

“Oh, I think you should quit while you’re still breathing,” Mel offered back.

“You’re probably right,” Grayson grumbled.

His brother’s predicament didn’t seem quite so funny anymore, especially, when he’d managed to drop himself right in it. At least his brother was on the outside of his mate’s car and not so close to her wrath. Not that his mate had delivered it – yet — but he was sure that, as with all females, it was only a matter of time and would come up later.

“Or,” she left that hanging for a long moment, and Grayson didn’t know whether to kiss his backside goodbye or not. “I could get you a bigger shovel, and you could keep digging.”

“I’m – good.”

“That’s a matter of opinion and something I’m not rushing to judgement on at this time.”

“I get it.”

“Oh, you might get it — I haven’t made up my mind, yet.” Mel turned to offer him a dark look.

“Are we talking about sex, or…?”

“And that would be where your mind rushes off to at an alarming rate, wouldn’t it?” Mel snorted her contempt for him.

“Hey, you brought it up…”

“I did not bring it up.” She wrinkled up her face and glared a look of disbelief at him, but he was more intent on watching his brother chase the car like a dog after a fast-moving bone than paying attention to his mate’s mood. Bad choice.

“You were the one talking about me getting it,” he tossed back.

“Not sex…”

“Like ever?”

“Well … der!”

“I think you’ll find that we’re mates, or did you forget that part…?”

“How could I? It’s the nightmare that just keeps on giving,” she sniped back.

“Well, you don’t have to be like that about it,” he growled back.

“Truthful? You’d rather I lie?”

“I’d rather you were less witch and more normal….”

“Normal!”

“You’re a witch – let’s face it, you’re not going to be normal…” he regretted it the moment that she zapped him.

As a consequence of that zap, Grayson’s muscles locked up and his foot pressed down hard on the accelerator. Mel was thrust back in her seat as the car sped up.

Mel let out a squeal of disapproval as Grayson bit out a hard curse at his sudden lack of control.

The truck closed the distance towards Dusty, and the beta flicked a look back over his shoulder at the approaching truck and did a double take.

“Slow down!” Mel bit out.

“Can’t — your fault not mine,” Grayson bit back.

He tried his damndest to unlock the cramping tension in his leg so that he could take his foot off the accelerator, but it wasn’t working.

“Back off — slow down!” Dusty yelled back over his shoulder.

“Out of the way,” Grayson was already yelling at his brother.

“Oh, for the love of…” Mel lifted her hands, pulled on her magic, and aimed it at the big beta running in front of them for his life.

At the exact moment that Mel lifted Dusty from the ground with her magic, so Grayson had a mind to yank on the steering wheel to take the car into the oncoming lane once more and away from the collision course with his brother.

The hard and fast rocking action of the car changing lanes sent Mel sideways in her seat. She squealed again, and swept her hands out on either side of her, accidentally twisting the beta this way and that in the air, before she dropped her right hand and grabbed a death grip on the seat, inadvertently whipping Dusty off to the right and depositing him in a large hedge.

“Whoops!” Mel grimaced.

“That’s something you don’t see every day.” Grayson’s deep chuckles only made Mel grimace more.

She turned in her seat to look out of the back window at the large, miffed off shifter that was climbing out from the hedge. “It’s just a shame that you didn’t get that on video.”

Mel’s lips parted as she turned her gaze to her mate, twisted her head to the right, and offered him a look of pure disbelief. Grayson flicked a look in her direction and answered her questioning gaze with more chuckles.

“Come on; you have to admit, that was as funny as hell.” Grayson chuckled.
