Cards of Love - King of Wands by Anne, Alexis (12)

Chapter 12

A Promise

“What are you doing over the break?” We were whispering in the early morning light. Why we were whispering I didn’t know, but I liked it. There was something intimate about words spoken so only your lover could hear.

“I have to work. My boss just won a very important race and I need to capitalize.”

King smiled. “Then I’ll stay here. I can rub your feet at night.”

“Well, where would you go if we weren’t together?” I bet he had a yacht or something fun like that.

His eyes locked on my lips then traveled over my nakedness. “I usually go home for a few days. Sometimes I take a vacation.”

“Where is home?” I wanted to know more about this mysterious part of his life.

“My brothers live in the city.”

“And you go to see them?” Yes, I totally noticed he didn’t answer my first question.

“Mmm . . . I look in on them. Make sure they’re staying out of trouble. Is there anything I can do for you? I get the feeling I should be doing those video things Jess keeps talking about.”

I also noticed he changed the subject. Perhaps I’d have to wait a little longer before I pressed him on his family. “Yes. We can definitely work on your videos and teach you how to do some of this yourself.”

He threaded his fingers between mine. “And maybe some of those videos need to be of exciting locations. Like Monaco. And maybe my public relations manager needs to come with me to make sure I do it correctly.”

He wanted me to go away with him.

God, how was this going to work? Richard pulled me aside at the track and said we’d meet on Monday to discuss . . . things. I had a feeling those things were the aforementioned promotion I didn’t ask for, the paperwork that needed to be filed for interoffice relations, and, possibly, whether they’d just fire me.

But I didn’t think they would.

I also hadn’t really had a chance to work my way through my feelings. Did I want this? Was it a mistake? The job was alluring and so was the man massaging my hip. “I don’t want to quit school.”

His hand froze. “I didn’t ask you to do that, did I?” His brow furrowed adorably.

“Not . . . specifically.”

“I would never do that. You have your goals and I have mine. I want some of them to be the same. I know some of them must be different.”

So . . . what the hell did that mean? “I go back to school in August. I have classes.”

“And I’ll have an insane race schedule until December. I’m hoping your advising of my brand will continue?”

That was certainly possible—especially if this became my thesis. “And what happens after December?”

A smile lit up his whole face. “It’s the off season and I was hoping you’d need a stay-at-home boyfriend.”

Someone to come home to while I finished my last semester of classes? “I think that could arranged.

“See?” He rolled us so that he was above me. “We can make this work. We’ll both chase our dreams and,” he rocked against me, “be together.”

He was hard, I was wet, and no matter which way I spun the logic, it aligned with my instinct: I was falling for King.

I slid my arms around his neck and kissed him. “That’s an awful lot of work and long distance.”

“Yeah.” He dropped his forehead against mine and whispered. “The best things are always worth it.” Then he rocked harder against me and oh, how I wanted him a second time. “Say you want me. I love hearing it.”

“I want you,” I groaned.

“Good,” he bit the side of my neck and smiled against my skin, “because I want you, too.”
