Dangerous Beauty (O'Connor Brothers Book 4) by Rhonda Brewer (28)

Chapter 30

So, they’d managed to accomplish almost nothing. Mitchell was free and for the most part okay. They were still stuck in a windowless room with a door that wouldn’t open. Now what?

Emily was pretty sure she started to imagine things because she could have sworn she heard wheels spinning rocks around. At least that’s what it sounded like. It was hard to hear anything in the fucking dungeon she’d been shoved into.

“I don’t want to be here when he gets back.” Mitchell stood up. “There has to be a way to get that door opened. This place is so dilapidated we should be able to kick it down.”

Emily knew he was just trying to come up with a solution but what was she a freaking ninja. If he wasn’t in such bad shape, he probably could, but there was no way she had enough strength to kick down a door.

Emily shoved her hands into her pockets and stopped. She pulled out a handful of bobby pins. What good were they? She was about to shove them back in her pocket when Mitchell grabbed her hand.

“I can pick the lock.” He snatched them out of her hand and slowly made his way up the steps to the door.

“Umm…. Where did you learn to pick locks?” She was actually a little surprised to hear he could do it.

“I figured it out when I used to sneak into the wine cellar.” Mitchell was poking the pins around inside the lock of the door, but he didn’t seem to be getting anywhere. She was about to tell him to forget it when she heard it.

Keith.

She listened harder and waited.

“Emily, if you’re here answer me.” It was faint, but it was him. It was Keith. He’d found her.

“Mitchell, did you hear that.” Emily almost fell back over the stairs when she started to jump.

“Yeah.” He stopped poking at the lock and pounded on the door. “We’re in here.”

“Keith, we’re in here,” Emily yelled over and over.

“They must be outside.” Mitchell stopped banging on the door to listen.

“Emily, are you inside here.” Keith’s voice was closer.

“In here,” Emily shouted, and her voice cracked.

Mitchell kicked the door a few times, and just as he was about to kick it again, she heard Keith on the other side of the door.

“Emily?” It was the best sound she’d ever heard.

“Keith.” She pressed her hands against the door and yelled.

“Are you okay?” Keith shouted.

“I'm all right, but Mitchell should see a doctor.” She was sobbing.

“There’s a padlock on the door. Get as far back from the door as you can. I’m going to shoot the hinge.” Keith shouted.

Emily and Mitchell hurried down the stairs and huddled in the corner furthest away from the staircase. She heard several pops before it stopped and the door swung open.

Emily ran to the bottom of the stairs and stopped. Mitchell was still against the wall. She turned to go back to him, but she was suddenly enveloped in two huge arms that felt like a piece of heaven.

“We fucking found you.” Keith hugged her so tightly that she was sure he was going to break her ribs.

“I’m okay, but Mitchell isn’t good.” Emily pulled Keith to where her friend was now sat on the floor.

“Ian, we need you down here. Now.”

Emily didn’t turn when she heard several sets of boots stomping down over the steps. She was pulled back out of the way while Ian examined Mitchell. Keith kept his arms wrapped tightly around her, and she watched as James checked the others.

“They’re all dead,” James confirmed what Emily already knew.

“Is he okay?” Keith asked.

“He’s pretty beat up. He could have internal injuries. We need to get a bus here.” Ian ordered.

“He was okay for a while.” Emily didn’t understand how he could seem to be fine one minute and then not able to move the next.

“Adrenalin does amazing things, Princess.” Keith turned her and guided her up the steps.

“He’s going to okay, right?” Emily glanced back at Mitchell.

“He’s in good hands now.” Keith kept her against him as they ascended the stairs.

They walked outside. The rest of Keith’s brothers and the guys that worked for him stood outside like a bunch of angels. She looked up and smiled at Keith. She didn’t know where it came from, but there was a boom, and a huge ball of fire flew up into the air behind the trees.

“What the hell was that?” Emily screamed when Keith crouched down taking her with him.

“That would be the end of all this.” Kurt was next to them down on one knee staring at the flames.

“What?” She glanced at Keith.

“I’ll explain when we get you home.” Keith stood up with her. “Let’s just say. It’s over.”

Keith was helping Emily into the truck when Ian and James carried Mitchell out of the building. The ambulance had just pulled up, and the paramedics quickly took over. Emily didn’t know what was going to happen to Mitchell now. He had no family now. He was alone. Emily turned into Keith when he slid in beside her, and she clung to him. Her body was trembling so hard she thought it would never stop.

“Why does this happen when all the crazy stuff is over?” She’d noticed it happened when her mother was found and now this.

“It’s the adrenalin wearing off. Happens to everyone differently.” Keith hugged her tightly into his side, and she closed her eyes. She was safe.
