FINDING SOLACE (The Kings Of Retribution MC Book 3) by Crystal Daniels, Sandy Alvarez (18)

CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

MILA

Reid and I are driving to the nursing home to visit with Grams. I told him I wanted to see her before going to court this morning. Alba offered to keep Ava for another night since I had court. I spoke to my baby girl briefly on the phone, and she didn't need convincing to stay another night. Bella said she would go to her sister's house this morning and pick Ava up and take her to preschool. I honestly don't know what I would do without my friends. Bella and Alba have gone above and beyond with their help.

If my parents get their way today, I fear they will cut off my visitation with my grandmother. This will also be the first time Reid is meeting her. I'm not nervous because my Grams has never been one to judge others. She won't let his looks or his cut hold any bearing on the kind of man he is. As we walk down the halls of the home, we stop at the nurse's station and are greeted by Joni.

"Hey, sweetheart, how are you? And who is this handsome young man?" she asks.

"Hi, Joni," I adjust my purse hanging on my shoulder, "I'm good, and this is my… Reid." I've never had an actual boyfriend, and the word feels foreign just thinking about it.

"I see. It's about time you got yourself a man, girly and looks like you have a strapping one at that. I bet he's taking good care you, honey."

Oh, my God. I feel my face flame at Joni's words, and when I look to Reid he's sporting a smug grin on his face.

"Oh, honey, don't be embarrassed, why if I were twenty years younger…" she trails off as I cut in.

"Joni!" After she and Reid have a good chuckle at my expense, I decided to change the subject. "How's Grams doing today?"

"She's doing wonderful. Today is a good day," Joni chirps.

Walking into my grandmother's room, I spot her sitting in her chair next to the window, and her attention is on the television where she is watching the morning news.

"Mila," she greets warmly and with a smile when she sees me walking towards her.

"Hi, Grams. I brought someone for you to meet." When she notices Reid standing behind me her smile grows.

"Well, move out of the way dear so I can meet him." I love that my Grams still has some sass. "And what's your name young man?"

"I'm Reid; it's nice to finally meet you, ma'am. My girl has told me so much about you," he introduces himself taking my grandmother's hand and kissing the back of it.

"Looks and charm. You hit the jackpot with this one, Mila," Grams says. "Tell me something young man, are you taking good care of my granddaughter?"

"Grams, how do you know we're together, he could just be a friend."

"I may be an old woman, Mila, but I'm not stupid. I see it in your eyes and his as well. You're more than friends. Am I right?" she asks quirking her eyebrow, and it's Reid that answers.

"You would be correct ma'am. Mila is mine, and so is Ava. I plan on taking care of them both."

Over the next couple of hours, Reid and I continue to sit and talk with Grams, and she even talks him into playing a couple games of cards. I fall deeper in love with the man as I watch him interact with the woman who means the world to me. When it is finally time to leave, I watch as Grams ushers Reid forward for a hug and I don't miss her whispering something into his ear before he then looks at her with a warm smile and nods his head. I wonder what that was about.

"Thank you for being so kind to my grandmother," I tell Reid on our way out of the nursing home. Stopping in front of his bike, he turns to me and grabs my hips bringing me closer to him.

"No need to thank me, Kitten. She's important to you, so she's important to me." Encircling my arms around his waist, I lay my head on his chest.

"You're too good to me. How did I get so lucky?"

Reid rests his cheek on top of my head, "I'm the lucky one, babe."

Riding on the back of Reid's bike on the way to the courthouse, my nerves are a jumbled mess. Reid has assured me everything will work out, but my parents are ruthless lawyers. I've witnessed them in court a handful of times growing up. I can only hope the judge today is not impressed with the Vaughn's and their reputation.

As Reid turns the corner and the courthouse comes into view, I become overwhelmed at the sight ahead of us. Parked in front of the building is a row of at least fifteen bikes, and the thing that stands out the most are the men wearing cuts. Reid's brothers; his family. When Reid parks his bike next to Jake's, I unfold myself from his back and climb off.

"Prez," Reid acknowledges Jake with a nod.

"What is everyone doing here?" I ask to no one in particular, and it's Jake, the man Reid calls his President, who answers my question.

"You belong to Reid; therefore, you belong to the club. You're family now, and we take care of our own. That includes our support." Looking around at the men standing in front of me, I see Logan, Gabriel, Quinn, Doc, Austin, Blake, and several other club members. None of these men know me very well, yet here they are.

"Thank you," I manage to choke out past my sudden overwhelming emotion.

"Come on, Kitten," Reid's gentle voice whispers into the shell of my ear as he pulls me to his side and leads me into the courthouse. Across the lobby, we spot River talking to a man in a suit who looks to be in his early thirties.

"That's the lead investigator. The one I was telling you about. He and his partner flew in from New York as soon as River contacted them." Reid informs me just before we step up to the man in question.

"Special Agent Holden, this is Mila Vaughn and Reid Carter," River introduces us both. Reid and I both shake hands with him, but it is Reid who speaks first.

"We appreciate you coming all this way on such short notice."

By the look on Agent Holden's face after taking in Reid's cut and then looking over our shoulders and through the window of the courthouse at the slew of bikers outside, I can sense he's not sure what to make of us.

"So, what's the plan?" I asked breaking the tension.

"We're waiting for the Vaughn's to show. Once they do, they'll be taken into custody. I've already spoken to the judge. In lieu of the findings against your parents, the judge has decided to drop your case and the suit they have against you. The situation is pretty cut and dry. Evidence shows Richard and Susan Vaughn came after you out of desperation." Agent Holden tells us.

"See, Kitten; I told you I'd take care of everything. "

Letting out a deep breath of relief, I feel all the tension my body was holding hostage leave. "So, that's it? Just like that?" I ask, needing final clarification. This time it is Reid who answers.

"Yeah, babe, it's over. Your parents can't hurt you, Ava, or Grams anymore."

No sooner do those words leave Reid's lips when a frantic Bella comes rushing through the doors of the lobby with a wild looking Logan on her heels. From the moment Bella's eyes meet mine, I know the statement Reid just made couldn't be farther from the truth. I know in my gut what Bella is about to tell me is going to fuck me up. I can feel it with everything I am. So, when my friend rushes up to me with a tear streaked face and the look of horror in her eyes, she delivers the blow. Two words, that's all it takes to bring my world crashing down.

"Ava's missing."

And there it is, because my daughter is my world, my reason for being. From this moment, everything happens in slow motion.

"What the fuck you talkin' about Ava's missing?" Reid shouts. "She's at preschool."

Frantically shaking her head back and forth while having a death grip on her phone Bella explains. "I just got a call from them. They said they tried calling Mila first, but her phone kept going straight to voicemail, so they called me since I'm one of Ava's emergency contacts. Mrs. Sarah said the new girl they hired let her grandparent pick her up."

I feel my gut twisting with every word leaving Bella's mouth.

"What do you mean her grandparent? They can't just release a child to just anybody."

I don't try to stick around and wait for Reid to finish his statement. I've heard all I need to, and now I'm going to find my daughter. Because of some incompetent moron, my baby is in the hands of evil… my parents. The same parents who didn't give a second thought to hiring someone to kill their daughter.

On autopilot, I turn away from Bella and Reid and start sprinting across the lobby of the courthouse and out the door. I faintly hear Reid calling out my name behind me. Reaching the sidewalk, I come to a complete stop as I realize I haven't a clue as what to do or where to even start when it comes to finding my daughter.

"Mila, baby, look at me," Reid coaxes with both his hands cupping my face. It's at that moment with his face a breath away from mine that I suddenly snap out of my fog.

"I don't know what to do," I admit in an almost robotic voice I don't recognize. Latching on to Reid's cut I repeat myself, only this time when the words leave my mouth, I feel my legs give out from underneath me. "My baby is gone, Reid, and I don't know what to do. What do I do?" I wail at the same time I'm lifted into Reid's strong arms.

The next thing I know I'm being placed in the front seat of Bella's car. "Bella is taking you back to the clubhouse. I want you to stay there. Blake and Austin are going to follow behind," Reid orders. "Look at me, baby." When I do, I see nothing but fierceness and determination on his face. "I'm going to bring her back to you. You have my word."

With his parting words, Reid shuts the car door and walks back towards his brothers, who through my clouded vision I see mounting their bikes as Jake shouts his orders. With Bella driving in the direction of the clubhouse, I watch helplessly as Reid's tail lights disappear in the opposite direction.
