Boxers & Briefs: An MFMM Romance by Abby Angel (38)

Xavier

In the morning I decide it's crucial that I investigate this thing right away. I stop at my favorite local coffee shop. It’s called "Uptown" and I've been coming here for years, especially when I need a morning jolt. In this case, I better get jolted into knowing what to do about this case. I feel so fortunate that Jacqueline chose to confide such private information to me. She must really trust me and have faith in me to have betrayed her team like that. Of course, I would never use the knowledge to hurt anyone. I just want to get to the truth, like everyone does. We might be on opposing sides but we are fighting for a singular truth, and that is to put the real perpetrator behind bars.

The fact that Jackie is in so deep in this case because she wants to be and she cares about Emma, and she wants more than anything to expose her murderer makes me feel even more sure about her. She is a woman who possesses integrity and that is so rare to find in this world. Honest people are hard to come by and I'm especially glad to find that Jackie is one of them. Not only is she gorgeous, and cool, and sexy but she has a real brain on her shoulder and she seems to value her purpose in life which is to represent the underrepresented.  It's like the ideals we held in law school, to help the world, are still there in place for both of us. And for me, that just solidifies the fact that I know I want Jacqueline to be a permanent feature in my life.

I realize that I have to get to Emma's building ASAP this morning to check things out. Hopefully, there's a lead there somewhere. I get into my car and as I make my way there, I start to think about Wolff, my boss. It's awfully odd that he said he himself investigated the boyfriend angle but he didn't find anything. If Jacqueline's team managed to dig something up about a secret boyfriend, then it seems like Wolff, with the full weight of the police behind him, would have been able to do the same. He didn't even mention it as a possibility. He just immediately zeroed in on Damian Cain, which was an easy out because he's got a bad rap in the press and he didn't have an alibi. I wonder if Wolff knows more than he's letting on?

When I arrive at Emma's building, I prepare myself to go in. I'll need to talk to the doorman and to make sure he knows I need answers. I may have to play bad cop on this one if the person is uncooperative.

The security guard greets me and asks me which floor.

"I'm working on Emma's case. And, as the main security for this building, I'd like to know how much you know. You had to have seen something that the police are not aware of."

"No, didn't see anyone. Like I told others before you, no one suspicious passed by here except for that Cain fellow on his out."

"Hmm, you know I think you're lying to me and I need to know why. What are you covering up? Whom are you lying for?"

"No sir, you've got it all wrong. I only saw what I said I saw."

"Okay, if you're gonna play that way, then maybe I need to bring you in for obstructing justice."

A worried look crosses his face like he never considered he could become more a part of this case than he ever wanted to be.

"I'm serious man. You better tell me everything you know. I am not the person you want to be messing with. I can slap you with charges by the end of the day."

"Okay, all right! There was a man here, another man. She had another boyfriend. But that's all I know I swear! He paid not to talk about them, but that is everything I know."

"God, so you accepted payment from the man who possibly killed Emma and you didn't feel it was necessary to bring that to someone's attention? Wow. This is just disgusting. Some security guy you are. You have no morals."

"He paid me a lot of money!"

"Well if money is all you care about, then I have nothing more to say to you. After this is all over, I just may have you charged for tinkering with evidence."

With that statement, I turn away and walk out the door. Poor Emma had no protection with that guy on call. What a snake.

I leave in a hurry because I have to get to court. But I'm so glad I did due diligence and that I saw for myself what is happening. Jackie was right, there's another point of view on this thing. If I hadn't overheard she and her legal team talking, and if Jackie hadn't let me in on what they know, I might've still been working my ass off to put Cain in jail. This was a close call. I would never have wanted someone so innocent to be accused of a crime that is of this magnitude. I am questioning everything right now, but mostly I am questioning my own department. It feels like everything I stand for is crumbling away and I'm just watching it unable to help.
