Chapter Five

CHRISTINE

My eyes fluttered open. A school of peach-colored fish swimming across clear teal water greeted me. Yawning, I rolled onto my back and sunk into a stack of pillows, enjoying the surreal view. The curved glass ceiling above me stretched over half of the room and extended down the walls, creating moving reflections of the water.

A creature similar to a stingray except for its two sets of stumpy legs drifted across the ceiling. I smiled happily, admiring its black and white spots and thorny tail. Even though it appeared innocent, looks could be deceiving. Behind the happy-go-lucky sea creature, a double-headed fish with shiny black scales emerged out of the depths.

As the black fish inched closer to Stumpy, the unassuming prey sensed the predator and flicked its tail, spinning itself around. A dopey, smiling mouth opened wide, revealing a set of razor-sharp teeth. In the blink of an eye, the black fish disappeared into its cavernous jaws. I covered my mouth, muffling a gasp of surprise.

“Is everything alright?” Next to me, a tired body started to stir under the sheets.

“Sorry, it’s nothing. I was shocked by the wildlife display.” The mattress groaned lightly from our movement. I sat up slowly, the soles of my bare feet freezing against the icy stone floors. “Go back to sleep.”

“You’re not leaving, are you?” The Kleoni stuck his head out of the sheets, revealing a dark crop of tousled bed hair. “The day’s too young for you to go anywhere. Can’t you stay a little while longer?”

“Unfortunately, no.” I got out of bed and started following the messy trail of clothes strewn around the room. “Kleon is one of the most breathtaking planets I’ve ever visited, and the men are exceptional, but hanging around in the same place for more than two nights isn’t my style.” As I stepped into the hoop of my skirt, the Kleoni slipped an arm around my waist and pulled me back into bed.

“What do you think you’re doing?” I laughed, my eyes darting up to study his face.

“You talk big, but I think I can give you a change of heart.” He brushed his lips behind my ear, making me feel his warm breath sliding down my neck. His free hand eased the skirt off my legs and tossed it back in a corner again. “I know you don’t have any appointments. I checked your calendar.”

His hands crawled up my stomach and cupped my breasts. As he kissed me, he massaged my boobs with a gentle passion, making the buds of my nipples harden beneath his fingers. I shuddered, my resolution to leave caving under his touch. Without warning, I slipped out from beneath his body and flipped him over. The amused look on his face faded. He lowered his eyes, a wavering smile sneaking across his lips. We weren’t even touching each other yet. A thin layer of cotton sheets still separated us.

“Shit. Of course it is.” He groaned and sat up against the headboard. “What was that all about?”

“Something for you to remember me.” I made another tour around the room, stopping intermittently to pick up and put on my clothes.

“When am I going to see you again?” He scratched the back of his neck. I could feel his puppy dog eyes burning into my back. “Am I going to see you again?”

“Maybe.” I sat down at the foot of his bed, pulling on my boots. “It all depends on fate.”

“Will you at least tell me your name? I’m Kulio, by the way.”

I zipped up my boots and rose to my feet. Snatching the bag from under the bed, I headed for the door. The heels of my boots clicked noisily against the floor. As I lay my hand on the door handle, something made me stop. I rested my chin on my shoulder.

“I had fun last night. It was nice meeting you, Kulio. I’ll see you around the galaxy.”
