Barbarian's Prisoner: An Alien Romance by Abella Ward (26)

Chapter Five

Revealing his Dragon

Ella woke up to a cold, crisp morning. The pale sunlight filtered in through the thick glass window. She blinked and wondered where she was. The tip of her nose was freezing, but her body felt warm. Darilth spooned her, one arm wrapped across her breasts protectively. She turned and gazed up at the handsome man, listening to his steady breathing. In the warmth of his embrace, Ella felt secure and strangely at peace. She bit her lower lip as she recalled the events of the night before. She still couldn’t quite believe that she was far away in another universe, thousands of light years away from the convent. She was married to a sexy alien who was a prince and considered her to be his true mate. She wondered if she were dreaming, but it was all real. Fate had brought them together.

She traced a finger along Darilth’s brow line. He stirred and opened his eyes.

“Morning, beautiful,” he said, planting a lazy kiss on her lips and pulling her closer. “Sleep well?”

She nodded. “Morning. Thank you for keeping me warm,” she said, smiling at him. He loved her beautiful smile. It lit up her blue eyes in a way that made him want to kiss her.

He got out of bed and stretched. She gazed at his well-built back, his silver-white hair flowing down his taut sinew. Once again, she wondered if she was dreaming.

He picked up her dress and cloak and walked over to her.

“Get dressed. I want to show you something,” he said, smiling at her. He watched her put on her dress and cloak. She wondered why he was still naked.

“Follow me,” he said, leading her toward one of the large windows.

“Aren’t you going to put on some...” she began.

“I want you to meet Mekarth,” he interrupted her.

“Who?” she asked.

“My inner dragon. Mekarth,” he stated.

The window slid open and a draft of cold wind hit her face. She wrapped the cloak tightly around her shoulders and followed him outside. Darilth walked out onto the wide terrace completely naked. He didn’t seem to notice it was freezing out here. He stood a few feet away from her and turned around until he faced her.

“Do you trust me?” he asked her.

“I trust you,” she said.

“Okay, then. Don’t freak out,” he said.

In the blink of an eye, he shifted. Where Darilth had stood only a few seconds ago now stood a graceful white dragon. It happened so fast that the transformation escaped the human eye. She gasped and took a few steps back. The dragon towered over her and spread its leathery wings wide. Mekarth lowered his long neck so he could take a closer look at her. His head had a row of small horns rising from the brow line all the way up to his temples. Another row of horns adorned the center of his forehead, growing larger all the way down his spine and along his strong tail. His eyes were a deep sapphire blue with slit-like pupils. His nostrils were mere slits. Some pointy teeth showed trough his open mouth. His claws were big and intimidating, giving the dragon a potent presence. Ella could sense an aura of civilized grace, dignity, and icy strength that surrounded him.

“Hello, Ella,” Mekarth greeted her in his deep rumbling voice.

“H-hello. Where is Darilth?” she stammered and backed away.

“Ella, it’s me. Darilth and I are two sides of one being,” the dragon said. He saw the fear in her eyes. Tears streamed down her face and she trembled.

“P-please, bring him back,” she said.

What had she gotten herself into? She had slept with this creature, this beast. Sister Margaret’s sermon popped into her head of winged demons that lured men into sin.

Stop it! Stop it! She screamed inside, trying to ignore the insane voice inside her head. The voice that made her feel guilty about everything natural that she desired. She had married a man from another universe, a man who was a shifter. Yet, he was honest and gentle with her. He was her husband. She had not sinned and he was not a demon!

Darilth saw how frightened she was and knew she needed time to be able to accept his dragon. He shifted back and took her in his arms. She cried on his chest, clinging to him as if she was afraid she’d lost him.

“Hush, Ella, my love. I didn’t mean to frighten you. Mekarth is me. He is my other side. It’s like a manifestation of another consciousness within us,” he said gently, realizing how sensitive she was.

He took her inside and punched in commands at his panel. He put on a dark robe and settled on the chaise lounge. The maid came in, bringing them hot drinks and breakfast. Ella took a sip of the hot tea that Darilth gave her and felt much better.

“I’m sorry I freaked out,” she said in a quiet voice.

“It’s okay. Take these,” he said as he gave her the red breathing pills. She swallowed them with water as he watched.

“Darilth, the King will eventually find out about our marriage. What will you do?” she asked. She noticed he wasn’t eating.

“Listen to me, Ella. We will leave the castle tonight and you will come with me. Everybody will think you are my slave, but once we are on the R13, which is the moon closest to Iovis, we will be safe. The King doesn’t know the Eye has been awakened.”

“Why don’t you just tell him?” she said.

“I can’t. Right now I am still in exile and going against the King’s orders while I am under penalty is punishable by death,” he said as he watched her eat. “If anybody found out that we are married, they would kill us both.”

She stared at him wide-eyed. “What have you done, Darilth? You have put both of our lives in danger by marrying me,” she said.

“Ella, there’s no denying the legitimacy of our marriage. The Eye can be awakened only after the Crown Prince has married his true mate,” he said smiling. “I just have to persuade the King to let me come back. Don’t you worry, my love. I’m here to protect you. I’ll figure out a way to end this penalty. For now, you just enjoy your meal,” he said gently.

“Why aren’t you eating?” she asked as she took a morsel. The food tasted delicious.

“I will, but only after I stretch my wings and go for a morning flight. Would you like to go for a ride?” he asked her, amused.

“What? I’m not sure,” she said, still scared of his dragon.

“Come, finish up. I’ll show you,” he said, getting up.

Ella wasn’t looking forward to it, but decided that if she truly wanted adventure, she might as well accept this challenge.

“Wrap this cloak tightly around yourself,” he said as he helped her into it.

They walked outside again and Ella felt the cold slightly bearable as the tea had warmed her up a bit. Darilth shed his robes and stood a few feet away.

“Okay. When I turn, you climb on my back and hold on tight,” he said.

Ella wanted to protest, but before she could, he shifted.

Mekarth stood before her once again. Ella froze. Mekarth gazed into her eyes and this time she felt as if she was in a trance. Adjusting the hood of her cloak, she took a deep breath and climbed onto his back. She wrapped her arms around his powerful neck and felt the smooth, scaly skin there. Mekarth walked toward the edge of the terrace, stretched his wings, and dove down.

Ella closed her eyes tightly as the cold wind slapped her face. Flapping his wings hard, the dragon rose higher and higher and soon flew over the ice-covered land and peaks. Ella opened her eyes and gasped. The view was breathtaking. The golden sun peeked out from behind the mountains. The bitter wind almost bruised her face, but, at the same time, the feeling was exhilarating. She held onto Mekarth’s neck tighter, her heart racing with a kind of joy she had never felt before.

It was almost midday when they returned to the castle and as soon as they got inside, Darilth was summoned by the King. Ella showered, changed into fresh clothes, and joined Darilth. He looked outwardly calm, but the anxiousness in his eyes betrayed him.

“There has been an attack by the enemy upon another neighboring planet and the King wants me to join the battle since I’m still here. I have arranged for transport, a maid, and a guard who will accompany you to my home. I’m sorry that I won’t be able to take you there myself, Ella.” He wished he could stay and escort her, but he didn’t want to defy the King right away. His father had entrusted Keralth to get the army ready for terrestrial battle on Iovis, as an attack was expected any moment.

“How long will you be gone, Darilth?”

“It might be a while, but you will be safe at my home. My housekeeper will take care of you,” he said.

Taking her in his arms, he kissed her deeply with an urgency that surprised her. He pulled back and gazed deep into her eyes, his intense gaze revealing a turmoil that made her stomach churn. Somehow, she had a feeling that this might be the last time that she saw him. Suddenly frightened for him, she clung to him tighter, not wanting to let go. She was alone, and he was the only one she could trust.

He saw fear in those pale blue irises. It was contagious, and he felt his chest constrict. He held her for a long time, his arms wrapped around her tightly, feeling her racing heart beat wildly against his chest. He kissed her face, again and again, reassuring her that all would be well. She was so alone and vulnerable without him.

“It’s okay, everything will be alright. I promise I’ll come back,” he said gently but determinedly as she sobbed in his arms.

She nodded and he wiped away her tears. He kissed her long and hard for the last time and then he left without another word.
